My Grandad died in the early years of WW2 and my Dad was in the army in Burma until the war ended. So I think it was around 1941 when my Grandmother closed the shop and moved to her sister in London. -

I am re-posting this as I never had any response at all. Someone out there must know something Does anyone have any memories or photographs concerning my Grandfather's tailoring business at 129 Devonshire St. His tailors shop A.L.TURNER The Modern Tailor, was at 129 Devonshire St and had been there since 1905. On 25th September 1935 it moved to 15 Westfield Terrace. My father Cyril Turner also worked there and had an Apprenticeship Indenture. 18th Feb 1929 for three years at HW Bray's of 20 Pinstone St. Sheffield. At 5 shillings (25p) per week. Would love to have more information. Many thanks Richard Turner -
Hello Bryan Thanks for the info you shared about my uncle John and Aunt Freda. Sorry I took this long to get back. Sugworth Hall, now that is a new bit of info for me. I don't have any recollection of it at all. Do you remember their children, my cousins? John, Simon and Charlie. I am still in touch with Simon and Charlie, but John died a few years ago. Yes my uncle was quite an eccentric in many ways. Best regards Richard

Yes. I remember Claytons Clothiers. My Dad Cyril Turner worked for Albert Clayton. First after the war in their shop around 1946. Then later as a collector salesman in the Retford area. Claytons started a catalog, before Grattons ever happened. They also launched a credit idea called Shopacheck. I remember their depot was just off the Moor. I have no idea what happened to the business, but it was still going in the late 70's.

Rozweb Yes, it was a Bentley Continental. They were probably the only family who went on a caravan holiday to the south of France towing the caravan with a Bentley :-)

Did you ever meet Mrs Clixby, Johns wife, Freda? She went to live with her son in Australia after John died. Whilst there she had a bad fall and died in 2005. ---------- Post added 11-05-2016 at 10:28 ---------- Hi Rozweb It would be great to have any pictures you can send. Did you know that Baslow Hall is now a top restaurant and hotel? Have a lot of happy memories of time spent at Baslow. I even learned to drive a car there when I was 12 or 13. Driving round and round the grounds in a little old Austin A35.

Does anyone have memories, stories and or pictures concerning my Grandfathers painting and decorating business at 64 Wilkinson Street (off Glossop Road). My Grandfather, Fred William, died in a work related accident in August 1947. After that the business was under the control of my Uncle John. So the business name changed to JG Clixby. Many thanks for any contributions. Richard
