  1. I have a pretty decent spec Whirlpool machine. I tried the first "heavy stain" wash last week, with no extra treatments, just my usual Aerial Gel. The results were remarkable. Maybe you need a more efficient machine?
  2. ,,😂. Well the investment in their new market has definitely been worth it then!
  3. Based on my recent experience of purchasing electrical goods, they are obviously trading on their previous reputation.
  4. Like Megan, Diana thrived on the attention of the press, and was constantly posing for the cameras.
  5. If it's kinder to the environment than existing systems then please go for it.
  6. The new Barnsley market is cosmopolitan and has a lovely vibe to it. I think it's much nicer than Sheffield's indoor market. That said, even Rotherham market is better than Sheffield's offering. Barnsley centre really does seem to have a terrible drugs problem though. Both Rotherham and Barnsley don't come close to Sheffield on other retail. However, I still find them "easier" as a shopping experience, whereas in Sheffield, the layout of the centre, makes it necessary to walk a lot further to get around.
  7. As per my previous post, JL are now second to most, in my experience.
  8. Definitely try eBay and you could see if any of the unis offer related courses and ask if you could put an ad on their faculty notice board? I don't know whether each faculty has a Facebook page?
  9. Sheffield Forummers, you are an amazing bunch. 👏🌹 And, of course, that includes YOU Bob. 👏🌹
  10. Freshers fairs and stalls early on during the first trimester in the Uni foyers and ads on the notice boards. Depends what you're after. Some sell on eBay. Charity shops local to the universities. Not sure if the second hand book shop is still in Sharrow Vale - used to be good for academic publications. If you could be a little more specific of what you're after, and what you want to do with the books, you might generate more helpful responses. Local libraries often sell off used books at seriously knocked down prices.
  11. I did wonder about that 😉. Better safe than sorry though. Ours sounds every time dinner's ready. 😁
  12. I was saddened to hear about the death of Kelly Preston. As well as a good actor, she always seemed like a nice person to me. It must be a terrible time for John Travolta and their families, especially having tragically lost their son years ago too.
  13. Tell me, if your ancestors had been rounded up, beaten, treated worse than animals, shipped off thousands of miles away from their homes and families and in to a life of slavery, how do you think you'd feel having to see a statue of a person every day, glorifying that? Yes, and Jimmy Savile raised millions for Stoke Mandeville but I don't want a statue glorifying him either.
  14. I didn't know that, sheffbag, thank you. I still like it though and think that it's a very appropriate replacement.
  15. That's a good feature. They should all do that.
  16. Your bitter comments are not going to stop me being happy about activism making the world a better and fairer place and wanting to celebrate it. I'm glad people like me make you laugh because it sounds like you desperately need to do that.
  17. I'm a little torn on this. I'm not a great fan of terrorism or religious extremism and I didn't enjoy her interview due to the views she still held. However, I'm not a fan of vulnerable kids being groomed and brainwashed on the internet by evil, dangerous adults either, and I think our government should have done more to protect our children from it.
  18. Get rid of them leering over black people on their way to work every day and put them in museums - the only decent place for them.
  19. Yes, if there's statues of Roman slave traders, let's get rid of them too.
  20. Wow. I don't think you can compare Jen to a Nazi, really! I didn't see a statue of an advocate of Black Power, just a statue of an activist celebrating a much-needed and overdue positive change brought about by people, black and white, coming together. The raised fist is a symbol of solidarity and activism, used by people of all ethnicities around the world.
  21. Yes, me too. I thought the statue was brilliant. She's also from a Windrush family too, which makes it even more appropriate, in my opinion. How can Bristol council let a slave trader stand there, an insult to the black community, for decades, yet remove a beautiful installation of a black activist within 24 hours?
  22. I'm afraid I have to disagree with the "good old-fashioned service ethic". I used to love JL because when you went there you got to speak with someone on top of their game, who knew each of their products inside and out, and took time to find out about the needs and wants of their customers. They sold products for people looking for something with smaller budgets as well as those with larger budgets but you knew you weren't knowingly going to be sold garbage. Nowadays, much of this seems to have gone out of the window. I've seen sales staff on the cosmetics counters ignore people dressed casually, in favour of trying to hook the more finely dressed clientele. As Julia Roberts said, "Big mistake....huge". Big clue - you never see staff in Harrods or Selfridge's doing that! My last three purchases from John Lewis were:. A sewing machine, a vacuum cleaner and a large freezer suitable for use in outbuildings. I bought the sewing machine against my better judgement because anyone who knows sewing machines will tell you never to buy one without trying it. You used to be able to trial any sewing machine out and that's why I went to JL but I was told they no longer do this. I ended up with a clever machine but one I would have perhaps not purchased if I had been able to see how flimsy some of the parts were. My subsequent two machines were bought elsewhere! When I went to purchase the vacuum cleaner, I wanted a specific release of the model that had a function I required. Some with the same model number had this feature, some didn't. It was quite a big detail. Despite selling these products for years, no one in that department knew anything about this and no one could tell me whether the model they had in stock had the feature or not. I was basically told I had to take my chance and lump it because it wouldn't be an acceptable reason for a return. The vacuum cleaner gave up the ghost a week after the two year guarantee ran out, and it wasn't cheap. The freezer, I took the extra warranty out on. After owning it for three months, it decided not to click back on, after it had de-iced itself and cost me over £100 in food. They refused to replace it, after I had said repeatedly it was of no further use to me because if it had done this after three months it could never be relied upon. I had to wait over a month for it to be fixed, which was the only option they gave me. JL told me they only give you the money back if it fails within one month of purchase. I told JL that I could get the same promise from any independent second hand freezer retailer, at a fraction of the price I had paid JL! I was constantly chasing up the part and the repair with the manufacturer, which should have been John Lewis's job, not mine. After being given the run around for so long I demanded that JL ring the manufacturer on their priority line. I was party to the call. After waiting an hour on the priority line with the JL rep, the manufacturer hung up. "Now do you see what your customers are having to put up with?" I said to the JL rep. "Why are you dealing with manufacturers with such shoddy customer service, as this reflects on YOU, JL!" I said. The rep had no answer. I have since purchased products from Currys and Argos and have been far more impressed with their customer service and after care. I didn't mind paying more for good old-fashioned service, but I'm not going to pay more for a less than mediocre service. I've already mourned the loss of the good old-fashioned JL. It departed a long time ago.
  23. Well that response alone has made my thread worth taking the time. Thank you, and I'm glad to hear it. 👍
