  1. He upset the Thompson family in Glasgow, thats why he moved down here. Arthur Thompson was arguably Britain's most dangerous criminal.
  2. These people have a perfect right to demonstrate. Not at public expense. They should pick up the bill in full.
  3. The odds of Labour ever winning power again are very long. Scotland is lost to them, the Boundary Commission is likely to reorganise constituencies in the Tories favour. The Conservatives would need to fall apart as a party to give Labour any chance. Cameron has been quite smart in getting the referendum out of the way early in this parliament, in or out of Europe, the Tories will mend any broken fences within the party and be in poll position in 2020, Corbyn or not.
  4. When I lived in the City Centre (pre 2010). There was a very effective team of security men who patrolled the City Centre based in the Winter Gardens, If memory serves me right they had a number of patrols including Arundel Gate, Howard Street to Midland Station, Division Street to Devonshire Green, City Hall , Barkers Pool, Fargate and a couple of others that have slipped my mind. I witnessed myself the way they dealt with anti social behavior, littering, rowdiness etc. They were very effective. They got sacked after the cutbacks and were a sad loss to Sheffields night time economy. The lads I saw would quickly deal with the problems outlined. ---------- Post added 19-05-2016 at 15:15 ---------- Further to above comments re problem drinkers. I have a solution. Stop off sales altogether. Ban supermarkets and the like from selling booze. Anyone wanting a drink should have to go to a pub. Empower landlords to police their establishments barring those who would cause trouble. Social pressure on drinkers would help drive down irresponsible drinking. Licensing hours should be 11am to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm. (with magistrates able to vary hours to suit local conditions). This was the way things were till Tony Blair (remember him?) tried to make drinking into a continental style open all day and night nonsense. We are not French nor Italian, we are beer drinkers of the northern lands and we need to be restrained.
  5. I used to work there, I fixed the tinsel to the thongs and the sparkly nipple covers. The money was terrible, £3.50 per hour. At the time it was all I could afford.
  6. Denmark is a Hamlet (geddit?) In that its tiny. Population same as Birmingham. You cannot use it as an example of anything, its too small. ---------- Post added 18-05-2016 at 13:32 ---------- Capitalism works, can be a bit mean and nasty sometimes but thats life. Socialism can never work, it defies human nature.
  7. I am a former business owner, although I did not make the astronomical amounts that Sorrel and others have I have done ok. I also support the Conservative party although I am not a member. My concern is the growing alienation between the rich and the poor. I believe Sorrel is a bad example to use as most of his money is earned abroad. Comparing and contrasting him with a care home in the UK is unfair and pointless. Globalization is leading to these weird and wild differences with an apparent arrogance from those on the top of the tree and resentment from the bottom up. Aspiration and ambition appear stifled unless you fit the acceptable profile of the elite. This is not sustainable, unless there is fairness and a more equitable sharing of wealth inevitably the pot will boil over. I fear we are closer to boiling point than we realize. The arrogance and stupidity that caused the banking crisis has not been properly addressed, people see another elite rising and they do not like what they see. This is not based on envy, it is based on a perception that people like Sorrel are not worth what they receive and that others, not necessarily themselves, are suffering. Buffett and Gates have shown that great wealth can achieve great things, they are funding huge initiatives to eradicate diseases and other good works for the benefit of mankind. Those who hoard like Philip Green (BHS), rob pension funds, fiddle figures lie cheat and steal will incite the wrath, sooner or later, of the common man. It has happened before, it will happen again. Remember, I am a Tory. I believe in one nation, where anyone can rise as long as he holds no one else back.
  8. I offer myself for the vacancy. My manifesto is, 1. A free curry weekly to everyone who completes a weeks work. 2. All persons who have evaded tax will pay double. 3. All businesses who evade tax will pay treble, Their accountants will pay 10 ten times whatever they charged to give them the advice. 4. All supermarkets will be banned from selling alchohol. 5. All drinking will take place in pubs were all iphones will be banned so people talk to each other. 6. Free vapes to smokers who want to quit. 7. All drugs on prescription and free as long as the user accepts treatment for dependency. 8. All professional footballers to donate 75% of their salaries to developing sports facilities. 9. Anyone not standing up for national anthem subject to ducking stool. 10. Anyone not laughing at politically incorrect joke subject to ducking school. 11. All politicians, newspaper barons, trade unions leaders, media types to take training in nursing, probation work, policing, prison wardening, Parking enforcement and be required to work in one of these or similar jobs 20 hours per week. 12. Westminster closed down, the headquarters of government will be my semi in Rawmarsh. Me for President, you know it makes sense!
  9. The left hate everything other than themselves. Everyone does not hate the Tories, the ordinary middle of the road voter votes for competence not a party. At this time the Tories are seen as competent, Labour is seen as an inward looking, elitist, bunch of incompetents, led by the worst leader in its history. ---------- Post added 06-05-2016 at 13:12 ---------- Absolutely right.
  10. There is another factor in the Tory success in Scotland. Some have realised that if they had voted to become independent they would by now be bankrupt. The Scottish economy is dependent on Oil. A resource that is no longer as important as it once was and the price of which has plummeted since the independence vote. That being the case and seeing the weakness in the SNP argument some, many of them usually centre left Labour supporters, see the Labour party unfit to govern and therefore vote for a centrist Tory government. Labour has a huge job in reinventing itself, bigger actually that the Lib Dems. Unless its leadership starts appealing to voters instead of its loony left members, this once great party is finished.
  11. I was 12/13 the year I was there so that would be 1960. In my class was John Hudson, Richard Swinscoe, thats all the names I remember. Also Lorna Brader. My father worked got a job in the Foreign Office and we all went off to Burma. I cant say I was there long enough to form any lasting relationships or indeed lasting memories. I do remember Arnold, Rankin and Sutherland, my form teacher was a blonde young woman. The games teacher was Midgely? also a rather sinister chap Fuchs?
  12. Sorry to repeat the question but does anyone know why Gregg went out of business? Did it just go bust?
  13. Actually not a bad idea. The prison escort service is certainly better than it was under government management, the private prison service is as good as anything under government management. Detention services within police stations are largely privatized. The big difference is that the private contractor is fully accountable, there are few, if any, opportunities to hide when things go wrong. Private companies have stewarded sports grounds, replacing Police since the early 2000s. All Lincolnshire Police admin functions run by G4. If it works whats the issue?
  14. In the USA where Commissioners are well established, they have a national law which can be brought into play whenever a Police force is in difficulty. This enables the Police Force to come under the direction of a locally sourced but nationally accountable administration that may include the Commissioner. It seems to me to be similar to a "special measures" type operation and may be what is needed until the situation is stabilized.
  15. Oh I dont know, ten bob would get you well above the top of the nylons.Maybe you went in the posh pubs. And i could always forego the meat pie.
  16. Me too, those who think he could win are, I assume, unaware that before the next election the government will change the electoral boundaries. As it is customary for the party in power to do this to their advantage the vote will effectively be rigged. Further Labour cant win without Scotland. I see no possibility whatsoever of them dislodging the SNP. Therefore the 2020 election is a forgone conclusion. The future is blue.
  17. I see your point, but remember people like Robyn Cooke and others who resigned high office in protest against their governments actions told their colleagues of the paucity of Blairs statements. They decided to back Blair, they are, in my opinion culpable.
  18. I will pay £100 to a charity of your choice if Labour, under any leader, win the 2020 election. Labour are unelectable, they deny any responsibility for crashing the economy, their only policy is to attack Cameron for being "posh". The last campaign was risable. To win, they need a leader with the charisma of Blair backed by an organisational genius like Mandelson. No such characters exist.
  19. Ive seen every Prime Minister Since Attlee, Ive also seen the Leader of the Opposition. Gaitskell, John Smith, were impressive men, as were Bevin ,Bevan, Jenkins, who held high office, Kinnock was a bit of a windbag but he was a credible leader, Michael Foot was a very clever man but a poor leader of the party. I cant think of anyone worse than Corbyn, I cant even think of him as a serious politician, more a political activist, he should be on a march somewhere or carrying a banner. Ive no doubt he is a nice enough bloke, but you need more than that. The UK voters are never going to make him PM. At least i cannot envisage circumstances that they would. The sooner Labour get over this period of self destruction the better, for the party and the country. Regarding Cameron and his so called "dodgy" dealings, its a complete non story, he has done absolutely nothing wrong. the sight of village idiots such as Dennis Skinner shouting meaningless nonsense is nothing new.Labour need to get some policies developed, quieten down and work, come up with a credible opposition strategy. Or else the public are going to tire of them and you could seee after the drubbing they are going to get in 2020, the end of the party as we know it.
  20. Correct, but your context is misleading. Blair lied to parliament. He stated clearly that our country was in danger. He stated that Iraq had WMD. That is why many in his own party who would normally vote against military action did so, it is alsio why many Tories did the same. The war crime was committed by Blair representing the Labour government. ---------- Post added 13-04-2016 at 11:15 ---------- Runningmans language may be a trifle inflammatory, but I believe his contribution is entirely accurate, how any Muslim can be a member of or support the Labour party is beyond me.
  21. I used to work behind the bar of a pub in Darnall when I was 18/20. I would make about £1 a night, with that I could get a taxi to town, get into Cavendish or Penny Farthing buy a couple of drinks and get home. That would be 1966ish.
  22. Salary sacrifice schemes are also bent and thrived under Labour, Osborne and Cameron are seriously closing them.
  23. Im delighted Cameron resisted these proposals. The EU would love to undermine our financial services industry. Only a few weeks ago the French Treasury minister appealed to companies in this sector to consider relocating to France if we left the EU. In Germany Frankfurt would give its eye teeth to replace London as Europe's premier financial centre. It amazes me that even the looniest lefty doesn't see whats going on here. Still, most of them cant wait to see the country fail.
  24. There may be a difference, but the similarities are manifest, they create nothing, they spend other peoples money, the whole mindset is based on envy and class war.
  25. Why are you lot so keen to give the government money? Personally I think the less you give them the better. Overseas Aid to countries with space programs, ever increasing bail outs to inefficient public services. They cant spend your money fast enough. Today I was at the Retail World Parkgate, walked past one of the coffee shop, couldn't get a table, full of Rumanians. Obviously none of them working, so must be drawing the dole, your tax contributions are paying for them. Stop being gullible, keep your money for yourself and your family. Pay as little as you have to.
