If so, come along to our free information event and learning session at The Circle, Rockingham Lane on the 1st of March (1.30pm-4.30pm) This event is being held to give you an opportunity to increase your knowledge and understanding of the role of the Personal Assistant (PA) within health and social care. 6. We had the pleasure of attending the Sshefield Care matters meeting in Sharrow on Saturday where we signposted people to important reports relating to social care. One report was by the the Independent Living Strategy Group (ILSG) – chaired by the disabled crossbench peer Baroness [Jane] Campbell – and published by the charity in Control, and focuses on the impact of cuts to social care on people’s independence and basic human rights. There are some vital statstics here that can help you inform others of the plight of disabled people in relation to the independent living. I promised to get the link up here: http://www.in-control.org.uk/news/in-control-news/report-on-the-independent-living-survey-2016.aspx Please also see this news piece from Disability News Service: http://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/disabled-people-face-extreme-risk-of-harm-without-sharp-rise-in-care-funding/ The other news which outlines some worrying issues is the UN Committee on the Rights of Disabled Persons (CRPD) has found that “changes to benefits have ‘disproportionately affected’ disabled people.” Please follow link to the UN Report via our website: http://www.disabilitysheffield.org.uk/blog/un-grave-disability-rights-violations-under-uk-reforms-2016-11-10 In the meantime, please stay strong everyone and keep telling everyone how it is. Friends, relatives and elected representatives - both councilors and MPs - get them involved and get them to demand answers and guarantees for peoples safety.
  7. It's a very important meeting an great to see people coming together to express their views independently from other organisations. Representatives from Disability Sheffield will be attending the event.
  8. Hi there, there are indeed other websites that offer the same services, however many of these are nationwide whereas ours is the only one that is specific to Sheffield. The sign up fees for employers may seem a little steep, however we have researched other PA Registers to ensure we are offering a competitive service; if not cheaper in some cases. Ideally we would love to provide the register free of charge, however we do not receive any government or outside funding to maintain the service. In terms of receiving extra funding to cover the fees through the direct payment system, this is something you would have to speak to your social worker about or request during your assessment as I'm not entirely sure this is something the SCC would provide.
  9. Hi there, if you are looking for extra hours as a PA, please consider signing up to Disability Sheffield's PA Register - it is completely free for a PA to sign up, and on there you can advertise your availability as well as responding to adverts looking for PAs by potential employers. This is a relatively new service, so we are looking for as many PAs to sign up as possible – we currently have lots of potential employers but not enough PAs to fill the demand! You can the register at http://www.disabilitysheffield.org.uk/pa-register
  10. Dear Allan Many hundreds of thousands of disabled people will share your deep concerns. The gap between disabled people’s employment rate and the rest of the population has remained largely static for over a decade – now standing at some 30 per cent. There is obviously something very wrong with the way disabled people are treated within the job market. Locally we work with statutory agencies to influence better treatment of disabled people in the work place and try to influence local strategies to reduce disabled people's barriers to employment and full participation in society. Please keep a look out on our website for any developments locally. And good luck with the job hunt. DS
  11. Thanks manwithaview - it's good to know the service is welcome and we hope it alleviates some of the problems we know disabled people have in recruiting PA's. Please keep in touch with us at http://www.disabilitysheffield.org.uk - perhaps consider becoming a supporter - whilst Healthwatch Sheffield http://www.healthwatchsheffield.co.uk are the local watchdog on Health and Social Care issues - you may also be interested in the Disability Hub which seeks to involve local people on equality issues covering the wider range of services offered by Sheffield City Council - please folllow this link for further information: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/policy--performance/how-we-will-deliver/other-strategies-plans-and-policies/equality-and-diversity/equality-hub-network/disability-hub.html Take care for now.
  12. Disability Sheffield has designed and developed a PA Register for adults, young people or children who are looking to employ a PA, and also for Personal Assistants looking for work within the social care sector. The register has been designed by people who have experience of recruiting PAs and who understand how time-consuming and frustrating a process it can be. We want to make the process of recruiting a PA as simple and hassle-free as possible for you. There are lots of people wanting to be PAs with a whole range of experience and there are increasing numbers of people looking for PAs of their own choice to meet their particular needs but there has been no easy way for PAs to find employers and vice versa – until now. The PA Register is a database which allows PAs to complete a FREE profile, and these profiles can be searched by potential employers. It also allows employers to advertise specific jobs, which are searchable by PAs. If a PA thinks they might be suitable for one of these advertised jobs, they are able to apply directly to the employer We invite both people looking to employ a PA and PAs looking for work to take a look at the register at http://www.disabilitysheffield.org.uk/pa-register and sign up today!
  13. Hi Folks The All Party Parliamentary Group for Disability has launched an inquiry into Halving the Disability Employment Gap The All Party Parliamentary Group for Disability invites written submissions to inform its inquiry into how the Government can fulfill its pledge to halve the disability employment gap. We would therefore like to ask disabled people to share their feelings and any personal stories of bearing the effects of unemployment or trying to stay in work. Please feel free to share them with us and are happy to use them as examples in our response. If you want to take part please complete our short survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FPB28Q8 Thanks
  14. We can't recommend care homes but wanted to check you knew of the Sheffield Directory which, as well as having a listing of Sheffields care homes it also has this useful checklist. http://search3.openobjects.com/kb5/sheffield/directory/advice.page?id=_SQ1YSr16tU Hope of some help to you both.
  15. Hi There A Personal Assistant or PA is someone you choose and employ to provide the support you need, in the way that suits you best. This may include cooking, cleaning, help with personal care such as washing and dressing, and other things such as getting out and about in your community. Your personal assistant can be paid through direct payments or a personal budget. Sometimes people refer to PAs as Support Workers but maybe Support workers are perhaps someone allocated to you by a care agency, rather tha someone you have picked. For people in employment who have someone to help them in employment can be referred to as a Support Worker. Disabled people prefer the term Personal Assistant. Good luck and hey - if you are thinking of a career in care please have a look at the Skills for Care website http://www.skillsforcare.org.uk/Home.aspx?gclid=Cj0KEQjwncO7BRC06snzrdSJyKEBEiQAsUaRjJXtBifiBBVTRSupPTAoVd3xyAJFyTvM7G8jRVqPJkkaAoGP8P8HAQ
  16. Hi Crookedspire Your views are certainly like many others at the moment. Certainly there is plenty of evidence that disabled people have been targeted quite unfairly during this period of austerity where everyone has been supposed to share the burden equally. Thankfully if a given Government gets its policies so wrong, we get u-turns on such policies as the proposed changes to PIP announced in the budget. The fact that the Government have announced there would be no further cuts on welfare spending during the tenure of this parliament maybe gives us some comfort and shows us, that by complaining vigorously enough, we can force a climb-down when it gets too much. The phone calls and complaints we receive very much echo your concerns about the care industry and the lack of trusted, quality care services that help disabled people maintain their independence and ensure they can play the part in society they want. In a positive sense there are so many charities and disabled peoples user led organisations campaigning vigorously and fighting for the rights of disabled people that once again we will start to move forward in creating a more level playing field for disabled people. Please keep in touch with us about your concerns and you can also contact Sheffield Healthwatch about your care concerns. The more evidence we have to collect and give to local decision makers the better chance we have of making an impact. Our main office number is 0114 253 6750 or email us at info@disabilitysheffield.org.uk and we have further information at http://www.disabilitysheffield.org You can contact Healthwatch on (0114) 253 6688 info@healthwatchsheffield.co.uk http://www.healthwatchsheffield.co.uk Take care for now Andrew

  20. 'Lets Talk About It’ - Safer Restraints Training for Individual Employers and their and PA’s: 12th of January 1pm-4.30 at The Circle, Rockingham Lane. This safer restraints training has been designed specifically for people who employ their own PA’s and those working with individual employers including social workers, practitioners and family carers. Recently, lots of information has been published around this topic, but it has mainly directed at people living in residential care. Also, it usually comes from the starting point of the ‘cared’ for being a passive recipient of care and being in a position where they are unable to give their consent or express their wishes or feelings. Restraint is not something that happens just to people with limited capacity; restraint comes in many forms and happens all the time in the relationship between disabled people and those who are providing assistance to disabled people to live independently. Restraint is not necessarily a negative thing and there are many forms of restraint that are appropriate, but it is only by having conversations about this subject can people come to an agreement on what is or isn’t acceptable. * Sheffield Individual Employer and PA group together with Disability Sheffield and Active Independence have worked collaboratively to design training that is specifically for this target audience and comes from the social model of disability rather than the medical model. Should you be interested in attending this training session, please email tess.daly@disabilitysheffield.org.uk - although the session is completely free, we ask that you book in advance as spaces are limited.
  21. Community Care Assesments and The Care Act: 14th of December 10am-12 at The Circle, Rockingham Lane. At a time when many support and community services are being cut, Disability Sheffield is hosting a free to attend training session designed to help individuals who are in the process of undergoing a community care assessment (or reassessment) in order to gain a support package. This session will examine many different aspects of community care assessments and will be led by solicitor and Disability Sheffield board member Kate Whittaker. She will discuss what to expect from the care assessment, eligibility for support, the support planning process and also how decisions are made about what people are entitled to. The ultimate aim is to help people understand their rights about getting and maintaining a good support package. Changes introduced by the Care Act will also be discussed, including information on personal budgets and the well-being principle. If you would like to attend this free session, please email tess.daly@disabilitysheffield.org.uk
  22. *Do you employ your own Personal Assistants or carers? Are you currently working as a Personal Assistant or carer? Or do you work with Individual Employers and Personal Assistsnts as part of an organisation or social work team? If you answered yes to any of the above then please read on!* Disability Sheffield are running a number of free information sessions around the city of Sheffield over the next few months in order for individual employers, personal assistants and frontline workers alike to get up-to-date on the training and learning opportunities that are available to them and their clients. These opportunities range from workbooks and online learning to workshops and formal training sessions. By informing employers and personal assistants about the resources that are available to them, we hope to achieve a more skilled and satisfied social care workforce. Also, by giving frontline workers an opportunity to learn what is available to their clients, it will enable them to pass the information on in order for more people to take advantage of what is available to them. The information session itself is to last roughly an hour long, and it will take on a very informal structure whereby people can ask as many questions as they would like. A short 15-20 minute presentation will be given on the different learning and training opportunities that are available throughout Sheffield. Should these require funding, who can receive this and how to go about obtaining it will also be explained. If you employ your own support staff or if you are an existing personal assistant or carer, please come along and find out what is available to you whilst having a cup of tea and slice of cake! Likewise, if you work with individual employers or personal assistants, please join us to learn about the invaluable opportunities that are available to your clients. The next sessions will be taking place on: 26th of January at 1.30-3pm at THE CIRCLE on Rockingham Lane 3rd February at 1-2.30pm at THE PARSON CROSS FORUM (full address below) Although the sessions are completely free to attend, we ask you email us to book a place in advance at tess.daly@disabilitysheffield.org.uk – if you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch!
