  1. I was told you didn't need planning permission for a turbine. Looks like I was told wrong. Still, nice to see the council made it easy for the applicant to do his bit to try and save the planet.......!!!?.
  2. Why doesn't the government (whichever party is in power) offer grants or some form of financial help to encourage the installation of small wind turbines in gardens, or larger ones on individual housing developments?. I don't mean the huge white ones - attractive as they are - I mean the micro turbines, some of which cost a few hundred quid. Surely the cumulative effect of one of these on every other property would help reduce emissions?. I understand there are some larger versions in the 15k price range. There's one on a farm at Stannington, near my place. I'm really not a fan of the tories, but just for once David Cameron made some sense when he said energy policy should start from the ground up. I never thought I'd agree with a tory leader about anything.......
  3. I think its easier to create a sensational headline by declaring the evils of radiation rather than stating its relative safety. Maybe that's what's happened over the years?. What about someone writing a story regarding the evils of an irresponsible and sensationalist media?. So which is more dangerous - radiation or CO2?. Anyone got any ideas for the possible site of a nuclear facility in this area then?. Totley Moors?.
  4. Did anyone see last nights edition of 'Horizon' on BBC2?. According to that, low levels of radiation are actually good for us!!!!?. Projected deaths from the Chernobyl nuclear accident were expected to be around 9000. Apparently, only 56 people have so far died from diseases that can be directly be attributed to the reactor failure. What do you reckon - does that mean nuclear is safe after all?. Where would you site a reactor if they planned one for good old Sheff?. Me, I'll get a wind turbine for my back garden!.
  5. It astonishes me when people object to turbines on the basis of aesthetics. Anyone seen how aesthetically pleasing a conventional power station is?. What about sparing a thought for the pour souls whose views are spolied by those things?. Ok - I know it would take an awful lot of wind turbines to match the output of Drax or somewhere, but I think its a bit rich for people who use the power supplied by monstrous coal fired eyesores to compalin about a few windmills. As for nuclear, I agree we need to go for it, but if you were being honest, would you want a couple of nuclear power stations on Sheffield's doorstep?.
  6. We're sure you'll be fine. I felt a bit guilty about trotting our story out, but I think we're both still sore from our experiences at Jessops. I think I've been guilty of venting a bit of spleen in my posts:mad: !!. On the postitive side, I think the Jessop wing is a very well equipped modern maternity unit. The midwives were very understanding, especially the second time we visited. At the end of the day, we've got threee healthy kids who are busy eating us out of house and home - so what more could you ask:thumbsup: ?. Let us know how you get on!. Best wishes - Kathy + Chris and three not so little ones - Mikey, Joe (Jo Jo) and Louise (Lulabelle!).
  7. When my son was born, my wife went through a very protracted labour with contractions starting in the early hours of the morning and Michael being delivered at around 10.30pm. In his case there would indeed have been time to get him to hospital. It's also worth bearing in mind that this was an induced delivery which my wife thinks was started too early. She's of the opinion that this first birth could have proceeded normally if left to run its course. When our twins were born, any delay would probably have led to the worst possible outcome. The prolapsed chord would have either stopped or restricted her blood supply during the delivery. As it happens, the condition was only discovered by accident because we insisted the doctor examine my wife when she visited our room. She had no intention of doing so until we became more vocal and pressed her into taking action. The result was an emergency section and both children were delivered safely within 10 minutes. Up to this point, there had been no indication that anything was wrong. I think we both felt aggreived at the way we were treated by the medical staff at Jessops (although the midwives were very helpful - especially on the second occasion). My comments are really aimed at the doctors we saw who we felt took little account of our concerns. Its worth remembering that all 3 kids are fine though. We were certainly very pleased to have the hospitals facilities available - a home birth without those facilities would have probably have been a disaster for us, at least in the twins case. Sorry if that all sounds a bit scarey.
  8. We would probably have lost all 3 of our children if we had taken this route. Our first child had the chord wrapped round his neck 4 times and could not be delivered without forceps and an episiotomy. We had twins last year and ended up having an emergency section due to a prolapsed chord. I think our experiences of Jessops can be summed up by recognising that at least all our kids are here and safe. Both births were quite traumatic experiences for us. The doctors at Jessops were quite insensitive to our concerns, especially when the twins were born. Both were lying breach but they still refused our request for a section until things went dratically wrong. We felt overlooked and ignored during our times at Jessops.
  9. There's a mobile farm shop parks in the car park of The Rose and Crown at Stannington on friday between 4 and 7pm. It can also be found next to the cricket green in Low Bradfield on saturday afternoons. Very nice suasages from a local farm. Failing that, try Bakewell farmer market on the last saturday of every month. Not Sheffield, but there's some fantastic produce there - rare breed sausages are delicious. There's also local veg and all sorts of pies, burgers, fish etc, etc. I'm not a big meat eater, but the quality from these places is so good, that I was persuaded.
  10. My brother in law has a small window firm - he's totally honest and does a cracking job. C&E Window systems: 0114 232 3573 I know he's related, so I'm biased, but he's an excellent fitter!.
  11. Wow Rose - a novel!. I can't imagine how much effort must go into a project like that. Fingers crossed you get a publishing deal so we can all have a read!. What's the name of your book?. Its interesting to hear Nick Parkes studied in Sheff - I didn't know that. I'd like to work in some area related to children's illustration and Aardman's stuff is often quite inspiring. My kids love Wallace and Gromit.
  12. Hi - Yeah, I can't say any of the studying I did ever helped to get me a creative job. Like you say, that just comes from hard work and determination. I feel quite lucky to be working in a creative area - I'm a graphic artist in the video games industry, although that's not what I set out to do originally. I'm still waiting to make it as a famous fine artist or illustrator! Maybe one day !. Seriously though, it would be nice to know of anyone in Sheff working in an 'arty' profession - film making, video games, fine art or otherwise. Anyone else out there??. Any Children's book illustrators or authors reading this by any chance - bit of a long shot, I geuss!!?.
  13. Nah - can't be right. IMDB says it was filmed at an old gas works in London. Never mind!.
  14. I heard that the closing scenes of 'Full Metal Jacket' were filmed in some ruined Sheffield factories - probably around the Attercliffe area. Anyone know if thats right?.
  15. Sorry you didn't get on the course. I went back as a mature student after I got no where attempting to find a place on a graphics degree in the early 80's. On reflection, I think being a bit older separated me from the rest of the students on HADAF who were all about 8 years younger. Anyhow, it was all a bit up and down for me, whatever the reasons. So did you film course work for you?. Come to that, does anyone know of ex students who went on to work in a creative industry?. Ed's a nice guy. I think he was living in Lincoln when I was on HADAF. Must be getting on a bit now though - I certainly am:) !!.
  16. I was on the foundation course in 1980-81 and studied again for the HADAF course in the early 90's. Who were your tutors?. Did you come across Ed Mayer, Graham Bevan, Theo Cowdell and the like?. It all seems like such a long time ago now - but then I guess it is!!. Can't say I completely enjoyed my time there, but it has a lot of memories for me and I geuss it'll be sad to see it go, if the relocation moves forward.
  17. I also agree it could do with some more plants. Some nice winding pathways through the greenery to a more open area would just make it feel more intimate and interesting. How about some tropical fish aswell?. Its been a while since I visited, so maybe there are some now?.
  18. I remember staggering into that pub at the end of a pub crawl when it was the 'Bar Rio'. Yikes, what a weird place...!!. Anyone know what it was called before that?.
  19. I always blame the parents. Yup - its OUR fault if the kids are bad (I have 3!). I'm sick of people always blaming the authorities or the schools. If we have chavs and troublemaking kids on the streets, its because somewhere there's an entire generation of half arsed careless parents not making the effort and enforcing discipline at home. I was a pupil at Myers between '74 and 81 and the school had an excellent reputation - but it was a different society back then. Educational standards may have slipped, but discipline always begins at home. People should take charge of their families and stop palming off responsibilty to the state!. Sorry for the rant. Victorian Dad (hardly!!)!!.
  20. Anyone know of any links to good websites showing photos of industrial Sheffeld/Sheffield in the 60's and 70's or Stannington during the same years. In particular, I'd love to see Stannington before the council houses went up - I grew up in them, so I keep wondering how it looked prior to this!. Cheers!.
  21. Hope this is the right forum to ask - we're looking for a good local builder and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations?. Has anyone heard of a company called Barden and Hall - any good?. Cheers!.
