Anybody remember 'Captain ' Wall a PE teacher with an emphasis on appearance and hygiene. to the extent that he would slipper you for having slightly off-white pumps and would personally inspect that we were not wearing underwear so as not to get the pants sweaty during exercise? And the VW Beetle club. Mr. Palfreyman, Mr. Grant (who used to give me lifts to school) and others.....

I was in the year after Andy and only went cross country running when I failed to get picked for a soccer or cricket team (often) and demonstrated a complete and utter distaste of Rugby. You mean there were 'girls' upstairs? -

Andy Cotton said: 'Did anyone know Jan Wojtuski or John Grant? I still know them but haven't been in touch for years. All the best to everyone.' I remember Jan. I also remember other names mentioned above, Ann Paige, Tim Hale (didn't he have a sister?). I joined at J3 and left at J4 so was only ever taught by Miss Brown, apart from Miss Peirrus for basket weaving. Andy Cotton was a year above me and has made contact Richard Madin has made contact and I remember Katherine I live near John Mumford and see him regularly (every 2 years or so Other Names I remember but not in contact with: Mick Cummings, Sean Coleman, Terry Walsh, Geraldine Elmer ... Brian Robinson His Dad ran the Scouts pre: Brendan Gormley. Does anybody remember the Sound of Music trip ? What about the Belgium trip where we all got wet at Waterloo and got steamed up (in more ways than one) in the coach? Be well everybody. J -
I was there 67-74 and it was strange that Bro.Wilfrid had the reputation for being strict but was the most democratic school head I encountered (and I have since been a teacher, ouch ). Memories: Bro. Victor using RE lessons as citizenship and politics Bro.Vincent catching me for skiving his Chemistry lessons and RE lessons, but only mentioning the RE Bro. Serenus, deserved a sainthood for his Uni transition help - I did go back and thank him. Bro.nnnn? Incompetent French Teacher. Old lady French teacher. Always aged 92 Mr Grant and Mt. Palfreyman (VW Beetles) and the Physics teacher with a car with a Wankel engine (I used to cadge lifts). Geography 'through the soles of your boots' Mr 'Jack' Justice. Greg Davies copied his stance I think. Bro.Wifrid presenting a proposed new badge for sixth formers after we had no badge for a year. Spontaneous laughter stopped the badge without discussion. The 'new' Sixth form common room Tornados Telstar ... The Librarian teaching us card games (bridge. brag...) Bro.xxx? who used RE lessons for philosophy and comparative religions. Very advanced for the time. The Priest who tried to use RE for Bible reading. We rejected him. Bro. Wilfrid asked us why. The Priest never returned. PE :Captain Wall and the old Gym and focus on no underwear. Then new warm Gym, new PE Teacher and playing Volleyball. Walking down Scott Rd to some church hall for lunch (vague memories of trading school meal tickets as I was on 'Free' ) We had about 650 pupils. It was a grammar while I was there but didn't it become All Saints, or something, a mixed secondary school

I lived on Bates St, then Burgoyne Rd (I think) and eventually down by the famous roundabout. I also remember the Walkley library as a 'destination' and a place to chat. The Bolehills were great as was Rivelin Valley. Does anybody remember the Robinson family of Bates St. Dad was a copper and also the Scout Leader for a long time. Brian Robinson was in my class. The family sort of adopted me which I really liked. I would like to thank them. John Owens I also remember Dr. Bryson. He would make house calls and stand with his backside to the fire.

Miss Peirus never actually 'taught' me except for the wet basket weaving and other craft stuff that I was always bad at. 'Balsa Wood' ? She was diligent but nice. Miss Brown was my teacher for two years. Nicer when she did not have to lay the disciplinarian. Sister Margaret …Does anybody remember the trip to see the Sound of Music? Cheers all John

I would find it difficult to say that the ones I met were sadists. However I could not gainsay the experience of others as long as they are circumspect. The idea of beating a kid with a gleam in your eye is horrible. But so is the insipient verbal bullying that was also accepted for ages. J

From what I recall the 'sadism' and strictness was more in the image than reality. We had Brother Victor in first year and he used 'RE' lessons as great stuff for civics/ethics etc. Brother Wilfred was a softie - I can recall at least two 'revolts' that he ended up agreeing with. There were some incompetent / weak teachers but hey ho. Bro Serenus was THE BEST at getting you through the transition to UNI, in the days before everybody went. 67-72-74
