  1. As an ex old anstonian woefuuly reading some of the replies regarding a pubs name in anston, may i respectfully throw a little light on this subject. Firstly no such pub called the cartwheel existed in anston-the cartwheel pub and restaurent was in brookhouse, now thats out of the way here is a resume' of all the public houses that existed in anston both north and south. The leeds arms (run by mr &mrs hooton 50's 60's) the loyal trooper (run by mr harry burdett 50's 60's)-both these pubs in south anston. The blacksmighs arms (run by mr joe draycott 50's &60s) the cutler was built in 1965 to replace the blacksmiths arms and joe draycott took over as landlord, the old blacksmiths was converted into flats. Lastly the wee willie, a lovely youngers pub run by ken harvey on nursery road later to unfortunately change its name to the little mester (god knows why) this became a sticky carpet sky tv jukbox establishment how awful!!. I hope this throws some light on the subject and lays some of the myths re these once cherished establishments to rest once and for all.
  2. It would be good to hear from anyone who attended dinnington comprehensive school between 1963 to 1966 (ONLY). This period in my boyhood hold great memories for me and sadly on leaving in 1966, we all went our seperate ways. Here's hoping! !!
  3. Anyone out there remember the twicker? Sheffield universities rag mag'. I left the area over 30 years ago, but remember fondly this publication and all the 'goings on' in university rag week. Is it still publeshed? Or has it like so many enjoyable things of yesteryear vanished.
  4. Did anyone work at firth-vickers staybright works weedon street mid 1960's -early 70's? Particularly in the sales, mail room and publicity offices would be great to hear from anyone from this era.
  5. Anyone out there played badminton in the rotherham and district badminton league? My wife, margaret nee pickard and myself played at anston then on to thurcroft badmintom club where we made many good friends. We also plalyed for rotnerham in the yorkshire league and still have great memories of our playing days. These were curtailed my my job move to bristol in1973, it would be great to hear from anyone who between 1966 to 1973 that was associated with any of the above.
  6. Hello there, i remember victoia station. Only travelled from there once in july 1960, as a young boy it was the start of my summer holiday with mum and dad. We caught the overnight express to portsmouth harbour for our ferry connection to the isle of wight. Don't know what platform, but i remember we stood on a platform that resembled one of being like the london underground with a blank brick archway wall opposite as the big black rattler came to a noisey halt. Wish we could turn the clock back-great times.
  7. Doe's anyone remdmber the stattis fair held in rotherham, i think around october/november. As a small boy in the50's/early 60's i remember being taken here, i think it was located on the road to millmoor football ground from the town centre on a large plot of waste ground. Side stalls, rides and even a helter skelter then a toffee apple to eat on the bus home to sheffield.
  8. Did anyone out there attend dinnington comprehensive 1963 to 1966? I was one of the first intake at the school when it opened in 1963. I was in seagrave house, would be nice to hear from anyone of this era espeicially the footballers under the guidence of messrs, royston and billingsley.
  9. Hello dawn, thankyou so much for sharing your memories offthe family business. As i said in my first post the lasting memories of fosters are quite vivid, as our family always had a day trip to the seaside on high days and holidays calling in on our way back at a pub for pop and crisps!! Was your grandfather stan? I do remember he was a tall slim man. I think ther was also a double decker which was used for schools, was it also used for carrying football supporters to millmoor rotherham? You make me a very happy man by posting some photos you may have, they are lovely memories and i'm so pleased that you have brought me up to date
  10. Doe's anyone remember fosters coaches from dinnington. I lived in dinnington before moving away, i remember day trips in the 1950's 60's to bridlington, scarborough, a yorkshire coast excursion which also took in whitby and a sunday half day to cleethorpes. The coaches were painted red and cream and the sun always seemed to shine!!
  11. Who remembers the commercial pub top of weedon street at junction with sheffield road tinsley? We used it for many years when working at firth-vickers staybrite works, mid sixties, espeicially on friday-payday, when alot of the office staff would go in have a good pint of wards bitter and play the latest discs on the jukbox. I take it that the place is no longer there, proberbly replaced by some meaningless structure which is deemed in the interest of progress!!! Ah' halcyon days.
  12. My wife worked at arthur balfours/balfour darwins in the cost office 1963 to 1973. Her name is margaret white nee pickard. She was based on greenland road/broughton lane and would love to hear from anyone who was around at that time.
  13. Doe's anyone remember firth-vickers stainless steels, staybrite works, weedon street, i worked there starting a clerical trainee from august 1966 to may 1972, would be great to hear from anyone who wofked there. ---------- Post added 04-05-2015 at 13:02 ---------- Hi there, jeff edwards was joint managing director of firth-vickers and shepcote lane rolling mills together with john elliot. They were still in this position when i left 1n 1972. Other notable people there were wh-wentworth ping-sales director, eric brown director and cheif engieer and i think eric drabble who was cheif accountant (stand to be corrected on this one) anyone else who has memories of this great company would bewould be appreciared.
