  1. I am against purely on the basis that we would have to change song titles: For instance, poor Chrissie Hynde would have to sing, '8046.5 metres' instead of '5000 Miles' and soul legend Edwin Starr would spin in his grave having to scrap '25 Miles' to '40.23250 kilometre' - it doe'snt quite scan!

  5. In 93 I was having a quiet drink in the bar of a Manhattan hotel. I ordered a beer. A couple (from Denver) next to me heard my accent and asked me where I was from. "Sheffield" No reaction "Yorkshire" No reaction "Near London in England" The guy said, "Geez......London.....how long was the to drive to New York?" Only in America:hihi:

  10. Ironically my Gran saw the Clash at the Black Swan - no not a post modern grey power woman - she worked behind the bar at the Swan for years!! Read the 'Last Gang in Town' book? (updated version) Worth a getting a copy from library Keep on rocking amigo:thumbsup:
  11. Give baseball a try - its a very cerebal game and blue collar. Recommend a couple of books for baseball fans: Dan Shaugnessy 'The Curse of the Bambino' Leigh Montyville 'Why Not Us?' I like US football and hope the Seahawks steal it - like their offence:thumbsup:
  12. Yes good point - these are some of the fault lines and tensions that exist. I call for free speech, yet I agree with the German authorities for locking up Fachist historian David Irving who denies that the holocaust happened - perhaps I am contradicting myself. Also two faschists walk free from a court room this week - the vile arguements that must have deeply upset the Lawrence family and many other communities in Britain Democracy is not an easy option. Keeping tolerance in balance is very delicate and much too complicated at times for a thick Yorkshireman like me but I think it important to listen.
  13. It is wrong for Muslims to depict their prophet in drawings - the cartoonist knew this was a highly taboo area but as an sandle wearing liberal I support his right to do this - that is a democratic right, although I think the cartoons quite poor. I think therefore that Muslims, (as all faiths do) have a perfect right to complain about the cartoons and explain their reasons for their opposition - that is their democratic freedom. Yep, sometimes we are deeply offended by the views of others, we may feel insulted but people have a right to say, draw, paint......etc I think the burning of flags and embassies are part of a much deeper and complex set of issues:confused:
  14. The tour to promote the London Calling album imo was their best. I saw them in Sheffield on every visit the Clash made to Sheffield...with one notable exception..... the Black Swan gig. By London Calling they were at the height of their powers, they were better musicians and they had a better sound system. The fact that Jones came on stage with a banadana to cover a bloody nose because he had fisty cuffs with Strummer just before they went on stage added to the edge of their performance.
  15. Springsteen - Tunnel of Love Tour Clash - London Calling Tour Bob Marley and the Wailers at Finsbury Park Plus a big shout for the Specials when they played the Rotherham Show just before they split:thumbsup:
  16. To slinky minky - pick a harder target for a bit of fun - this guy is in distress
  17. The lad is there rain or shine. Someone told me he walks from Rotherham. When I travel home from work he is sat in the exact same spot, same time every day. He is not the only 'walker'. There is another guy I was told who does Prince of Wales Road to Norton. This guy is a little older. The lad on the A57 is always dressed the same and carries that black and white sports bag. Is there anything we can do?
  18. Repeated on E4 on Thursday evenings 10.30pm:thumbsup:
  19. December 25th 1976. I opened the coal house door and there it was, a Raleigh Hustler; purple, three gears, drop handle bars and silver chrome. Purchased from Langsett Cycles on Infirmary Road - cost my parents a packet it did - worth every penny.
  20. Jockey Wilson - that man could play darts and sweat like no other. Also, Dexys Midnight Runners wrote a great song about him - I saw it on Top of the Pops
  21. In your opinion who was the best school teacher? I nominate John Roe - Carter Lodge School 'Boris' was 'ace'
