  1. Did you think about asking him to be quiet adn informing him that you came in for a quiet drink with the missus?
  2. I've often wondered the same, though I don't live far enough away and simply cycle direct to work. Try it on a Sunday and see if they pick you up for it, if not ask the conducter if you can take your bike on at anytime.
  3. Use of a car makes perfect sense then but please remember that the thread I posted to start this topic asked why people who live under 3 miles from their workplace would drive. The distance covered by your example is clearly above 3 miles and thus is really not relevant. Relating my initial post to the professions mentioned; I fail to see why a builder who lives less that 3 miles from work (whereever that location is in a particular week/month) couldn't walk, cycle or catch the bus. The same for an estate agent, unless of course they have appointments miles apart with a 10minute gap between them. A Plumber would, I assume require the use of a van to carry parts and (possibly) heavy tools; that makes sense.
  4. Why can't they? I have never worked in these professsions so need further explanation please.
  5. It made perfect sense. You have chosen to live far away from work and, hence, from time to time suffer in the terrible Sheffield traffic. Is it not possible to either walk or cycle, or perhaps use the bus or railway to get to your new job?
  6. This one is a no brainer: By being one of the above mentioned professions they choose to do a job which will require a lot of transportation. Still doesn't mean they don't have feet with which they can walk or cycle. Or maybe even walk to a bus stop.
  7. If you move the problem around it won't all move in the same direction thus the overall load on the roads is more evenly distributed. Thats the theory anyway. Im not gonna be so bold as to assume it actually works
  8. A lot of people admit they have the choice to catch the bus and use a lot of excuses to avoid it: The cost, the rowdy kids, the smell, the infrequency of the service, sharing a seat (My bourgeois arse is too important for that! What a shameful excuse). If the buses are so terrible try wakling, in the 15-20 minutes you stand like a muppet in the bus queue you could have walked a mile. Unless you live more than 3 miles away people seem to be avoiding the fact that they have legs. However, when there short drive home is lengthened by an accident they will come on here moaning to high heaven about how bad the roads are. Weather is not really an excuse for not cycling or walking unless you are that vain/scared. When I do either I wear waterproofs which I bought from Decathlon for about £7.. much cheaper than petrol, car insurance, parking fees, the long term cos of high blood pressure induced by the stress of rush hour driving.

  10. A city centre in standstill because too many cars pass through it. Surely a congestion charge would make people think about alternate routes. Would that not be considered a success? You do realise that exercise in the fresh air with real hills to cycle against is much better for you than sitting in a stuffy gym right? Buy some shades to protect your eyes, they must be cheaper than a gym subscription.
  11. I'm guessing the government don't subsidise our fares because they are much happier with the tax we all pay on the petrol we use whilst sitting still in gridlocked traffic. Could this be a reason or am I not seeing a 'wider' picture?
  12. What about on dry days, do you consider walking then or is it too far?
  13. Just to clarify. This wasn't a post to have a dig at motorists. I have a car. I just wandered was possesed them to drive through the god-awful Sheffield traffic.
  14. Absolutely fine with me thats why I said anything over 3 miles.
  15. I can never understand why so many people rely on cars to get to and from work in Sheffield? I understand it if you live more than 3 miles away because it would take you a good 45-55mins to walk it. The problem is a car journey of the same distance could take that amount of time if you pass the city centre. So I woke up this morning thinking 'urgh! its raining, shall I drive?' I instantly banished the thought knowing that any escapade I make in my car will not end nicely. I'll end up annoyed, because clearly i'm the best driver on the damned road, and wishing i'd walked/cycled, even, dare I say it, caught the peasant wagon. I posted this thread because i'm interested to find out what seduces you to drive to work and battle with the gridlock, horns and general mayhem of our roads? (please don't say the school run, walk the kids to school, its actually good for them) P.S. I walked Edit: A lot of people admit they have the choice to catch the bus and use a lot of excuses to avoid it: The cost, the rowdy kids, the smell, the infrequency of the service, sharing a seat (My bourgeois arse is too important for that! 16. Can't believe your the first to notice, or at least comment. I didnt think it read correctly when I typed it.
  17. Exactly! They don't need to make you feel stupid for not having read every page. The search facility is very poor unless you already know the name of the post you are looking for.
