  1. Massive recommendation for Brick Tie to sort any damp/timber needs. They have all the accreditations and give very reasonable, honest and thorough quotes explaining as clearly as you like exactly what and why they think your property will or wont need certain treatment. Finally a damp company I can definitely trust! ---------- Post added 30-07-2014 at 14:27 ---------- Just to add this is the damp proofing company I recommended http://www.bricktie.net/
  2. Everything you described is identical to what happened to us. They went out to the property and actually did do the survey- but trying to get the written report and quote out of them was ridiculous. Ringing on a daily basis for about 5-6 weeks. I also seriously questioned some of the work they were suggesting we got done. All they ever want to do is hack of your plasterwork internally, which doesn't fix the problem. In the end a friend recommended Brick Tie to me who I have at my house now doing the work. Completely trustworthy, respectful, reasonable price and thorough. I totally trust they are doing exactly what is needed and they do everything on time, really recommend them.
  3. Just moved house with SBS- cheapest quote we received (they will do fixed price if you ask) and they were really prompt, really quick and really friendly. They were here 8.30am and had us all packed so fast it was a few hours wait for the keys which they were really nice about. Really hard working and trustworthy. Glad I followed the reviews I read here!
  4. Can anyone recommend a better damp proofing and timber company than them? I need someone that is BWPDA and PCA registered to do some work on a house i'm purchasing. I got H&L out to do the quote about 4 weeks ago and they STILL havent sent it to me. I mustve phoned them about 10 times now, its getting ridiculous. Insi which company did you use?
  5. I've just sold my house through 2Roost and recommend them. Coincidentally I'm buying my next house through them too. I really like them and have had no problems at all. They sold my house for asking price within a week. I was really pleased with the photos and adverts they did for my house and they also strongly advised I decorated my loft room more to make it look like a bedroom, which we did. As a buyer who was looking for a house- Saxton Mee and Blundells were the worst. Saxton Mee just didnt turn up to one house with no warning when we'd booked a viewing. We eventually found out they were running late but we had to give up and leave. They frequently also do 'open days' to force everyone to look around at the same time to give the impression a house is more popular than it is, but every time it just put us off. Blundells- They're fine if they dont do the viewings for you. But if they do the viewings its often the same guy who *refuses* to answer questions about the house saying he's never met the buyers and knows nothing. It seems from what he said that the people who negotiate with the buyers/sellers are not the same employees who show you round the house- they just turn up as new to the house as you are and know nothing.
  6. Thanks jsmith- I did think this actually. Do you recommend anything? We have pine furniture in our bedroom which is darker and more rustic looking but not sure on the best stain/varnish to achieve this look. Bit scared of doing it and having bought the wrong one... Thanks, I will check out Lavers.
  7. I wondered if anyone could recommend anywhere in Sheffield to buy good quality wood for shelving to be fitted in the alcoves either side of a living room chimney breast? I wanted dark colour wood (solid not veneer) and for the shelving to attach to the wall with thin wooden piping to sit on top of in the same colour. The only place I've found that does this sort of thing is B&Q and all they offer is normal pine. http://www.diy.com/nav/rooms/storage-shelving/shelving/shelf_board/-specificproducttype-wooden_shelf_board/B-and-Q-Value-Pine-Shelfboard-W-1750-D-300mm-9297178?skuId=9306874 I'm going to have to get a handyman to cut the wood and fit the shelving for me, I just want to buy good quality wood and not just some thin pine boards. Is there anywhere in Sheffield that does this sort of thing? I dont want free standing shelving units in the alcolves, but properly fitted attractive shelving.
  8. Really?? That's a cheap, nasty takeaway for drunk students. Honestly it's a pretty horrid place.
  9. I'm also thinking of selling soon and have also recently spoken to Hunters and Haybrook. I get the feeling I need to do lots of reading in advance as to what I need doing (like the EPC) to work out exactly what I'm getting for my money through them. As people have said £300 compared to the £1500-£2000 Hunters/Haybrook charge is very tempting. I'm thinking if it didn't sell after a few months then I could try one of the estate agents.
  10. Another recommendation for Lee S6 handyman. He's done a large number of painting and handyman jobs for me, all as good a quality as a professional painter who would charge you 4 times the amount. S6 HANDYMAN. the only way is s6,,17 YEARS EXPERIENCE (HOME MAINTENENCE) DECORATOR,JOINERY,TILING,DIY,NO JOB TO SMALL,CLEAN, FRIENDLY + RELIABLE,HONEST RATES,RING FOR A QUOTE, TEL 07946237432 ASK FOR LEE [email protected]
  11. Yes it was certainly most definitely effingham. We were on our way to pdsa vets on newhall and drove within about 50 feet of the fire. I was so scared of an explosion we'd have turned back if the traffic behind us wouldve made it possible. It was definitely behind some scrapyard places, sounds like its that plastics recycling place.
  12. We got stuck in the slight traffic jam due to idiots stopping and taking photos
  13. It is on effingham just drove past it. Scrap yard place.
  14. Another recommendation for Lee Rodgers. He painted our hall and stairs absolutely perfectly and for the best quote I got off the Forum. Thoroughly impressed Copied and pasted his details below:- S6 HANDYMAN. the only way is s6,,15 YEARS EXPERIENCE (HOME MAINTENENCE) DECORATOR,JOINERY,TILING,DIY,NO JOB TO SMALL,CLEAN, FRIENDLY + RELIABLE,HONEST RATES,RING FOR A QUOTE, TEL 07946237432 ASK FOR LEE RODGERS
  15. We havent blocked the coal shute and we do have two airbricks in there. The fact is the fake ceiling is now covered in mould and buckling from the damp. Pretty sure it will collapse in soon. Suspect I need to get someone more qualified in to take a look at the best approach.
  16. I bought a terraced house in Walkley about 4 years ago and the survey told us the joists in the cellar needed the ends reinforcing. We got Higginbottom and Lesselles I think they were called, to come and sort the joists and they put damp proofing through out the kitchen and living room for us. When they fitted new joist ends they told us the insulation we had in the celler wasnt any good and was causing damp and they ripped it all out. However standing in the cellar- you could look right up at the living room floorboards. We kept it like this through two totally freezing cold winters but our living room was SO cold that the months September-April basically made it unusable. We never went in there when it was cold. I eventually relented and decided to get the ceiling of the cellar insulted and got a local handyman to do it recommended by a friend. He packed insulating wool (whatever its called) between all the joists and put boards up over it. Almost creating a new fake ceiling in the cellar which has all the insulating material packed behind. However my concern is- you cant see or get access to the joists at all anymore. With the insulating material packed around- is there any chance that it could increase the chances of the joists rotting? Has he done the right thing with totally packing it around and over all the joists? I ask because I went down there recently and the new ceiling has quite a lot of mould now growing across it. Not helped by ALL the rain we've had- but I am a bit worried if that was the best way to insulate the cellar?
  17. I live in a terraced house in Walkley and my front and back external window ledges have all the paint peeling off. They need sanding down and repainting. Ive tried to do it myself and making more of a mess of it. Anyone on the Forum do these sort of jobs? Please Pm if interested
  18. I just used Craig Green at Greens Property Maintenance to totally redo my garden. Email [email protected]
  19. The Council don't actually taste the food you know. Its about where your food is being prepared
  20. Agreed, it needs to learn from the Blake. Just put on amazing beers and people flock in
  21. Yeah I really love this place. Fantastic food and really different. Frequently use their takeaway service "guru to go". (assuming its same company)
  22. Don't know if anyone can help- I used a great gardener/landscaper/handyman at the end of 2009 off this forum and I really want to use him again. He was called *something* like PL landscaping" or something like that. He PM'd me and the forum has now deleted those old messages so I cant find his contact details. Does anyone know/have them?
  23. Also recommend steve (corgigasman). Fitted me a brand new boiler. Number of difficulties arose, inc my plastering on the wall not being strong enough to hold up the boiler, and he found a way around all of it and did a really professional job for a very competitive price. He even knew I needed a new boiler and rang me to tell me about the Government boiler scrappage scheme and helped me work out how to get £400 off the Govt! Fantastic
  24. Cant remember any of the names of the ales I'm afraid apart from the aforementioned Pigs Ear. I think they have about 4 or 5 ales like that one, and then the usual moonshine and kelham island ales. Then the lovely european lagers like flensburger, bitburger, kuppers kolsch, erdinger, leffe and sometimes paulaner. Garden is fanastic with heated area so able to sit outside now. Is now my favourite local pub and gets quite busy from 8ish onwards. Pub quiz is also dead easy- we've won twice. It's totally fine to leave your car outside (if you insist on driving) for whoever mentioned there being nothing left of it. Its Walkley to me and totally safe.
