  1. For the past few weeks every time I have watched TV adverts there has been a group of people singing "support your local High Street". The Yorkshire weatherman has advised me to do the same,as has all of the National Newspapers. Why should I bother when councils all over the country have done their best to deter me from doing this? No matter where you go there are never enough parking spaces. If you can find one you will be charged an obscene fee ,and woe betide you if you are back a few minutes late, you will collect a parking ticket, usually from an obnoxious jobsworthy, but it can be via the post, and it will cost you around a ton. Councils have bled motorists dry and are now reaping what they have sown.Sensible people have given up on town centre shopping and it will take a lot more than a few songs or adverts to bring it back.
  2. Haggle on everything you buy.Big stores will haggle, especially large electrical dealers, car dealers, phone shops etc. Also don't forget to haggle with your TV,phone or broadband provider and the motoring organisations.Even if they don't come down on price they will chuck in an extended warranty or a freebie of some kind. You have nothing to lose by having a go.
  3. As far as I know only the big six have to offer this scheme.Claimants have to be on certain benefits and even if they meet the criteria to receive it they are not guaranteed it as the companies only have to offer a certain amount.
  4. According to the Mirror anybody who signs on to Universal Credit after Nov 20th will not receive any payment until the new year. This is at least 6 weeks. How on earth is anybody expected to last this length of time with no income? The mirror calls UC a Premeditated Cruelty and they are absolutely right.Thousands of cases of UC causing poverty, people to lose their homes,a massive increase in the use of food banks and people having no food, electricity or gas for weeks on end have been confirmed and reported yet this government still persists in carrying on with this useless payment system. When asked how she slept at night Amber Rudd said " very soundly". This country is, I believe the 5th richest in the world, yet needy people are treat like this. The government needs to sit up and take notice or it will get kicked out.Still, no worries ,all the MPs will have enough money to manage.
  5. As far as I know councils have a legal responsibility to dispose of the body.
  6. And as usual nothing will be done about it.Everybody connected with the funeral industry is laughing all the way to the bank and the government is perfectly happy as it has a permanent influx of money. Both know there will never be any redundancies and dying will never go out of fashion. The only thing people can do is to flatly refuse to pay for anything to do with a funeral. As far as I know ,at present nobody is legally obliged to pay for a funeral unless they actually order one.
  7. I assume you are one of these who thinks pensioners free travel passes should be axed as well.
  8. According to recent TV news reports the BBC is looking to axe the free television licence for the over 75s.Their argument being many over 75s can easily afford to pay for the licence. They are right of course, many can afford it,but many can't.Therefore if the BBC is to be allowed to finance itself in this ridiculous way the licence fee should be means tested, and possibly not just for the over 75s but for people on a low income. However I fail to see why anybody should have to pay anything to the BBC if they don't want to watch their programs. The BBC offers a second rate service of a handful of channels, none with a plus 1 hour service, but all showing about 80% repeats, and there are dozens of free programs available from other providers. The government should now step in and give consumers the choice of paying for the service or just not being able to receive it if they do not want to watch it.The technology is there to do this.If this does not raise enough money for the BBC they should have to find an alternative way to finance themselves,or alternatively close the whole lot down. They have squandered Joe Publics easily obtained money for far too long.
  9. Yes a relative has just arranged a basic funeral for her husband and it cost £2400 and she is paying on the weekly , she is over 70 years old.Who on earth wants to land themselves in this amount of debt at that age? Many people work hard and don't even know what £2000 looks like, they have difficulty making ends meet all their life thanks to low wages and the tory policy of robbing the poor to feed the rich, then they are forced into even more debt. The whole funeral industry needs a thorough ,in depth investigation into its rip off activities.
  10. Every time the postman comes he seems to bring me warning leaflets about the ever increasing cost of funerals, all urging me to take out a funeral plan. The latest one to come today says funerals will cost over £8000 in 2020.What a rip off, the funeral directors are taking the mick and laughing all the way to the bank. I know thousands of people are having to pay for expensive funerals on the weekly simply because they are made to feel obliged to pay for it..But why is all this necessary?.Whilst i appreciate some people will want to give their loved ones a good send off many people cannot afford to pay for a funeral so I fail to see why they should have to.When someone dies a death certificate should be issued and that is all that should be necessary, relatives could then have a get together to remember the deceased. As far as I know nobody is legally obliged to pay for anybodies funeral, but if one is arranged then whoever arranges it has to pay for it, unless the cost can be taken out of the deceased's assets.
  11. Fairest one I know is Century Motors on Catch Bar Lane.
  12. Carphone Warehouse at Buxton have stopped giving receipts.I don't know if all branches of this company are doing the same.
  13. I know how you feel and I hate to tell you that just because you are moving to where houses have no chimneys does not necessarily mean you will get away from these monstrosities. The houses on our estate have no chimneys but a bloke had a wood burner fitted last year and a chimney was run up the side of the wall.It hardly kicks any smoke out but it smells disgusting and gives you an instant sore throat. Our window frames have specks of soot on them and if he lights it when we have any washing out we have to re-wash the lot.The council would do nothing.I would really like to give this bloke the pasting he deserves but unfortunately he has about 50 years youth on his side. However if he uses it again this winter things just might change, there are other methods worth considering.
  14. You are absolutely right, these things smell disgusting.Come winter the smell of burning wood will be everywhere and runny eyes and sore throats from the particles they produce becomes the norm.
  15. I used to go in the Smugglers in the 60s but none of the previously mentioned names ring a bell.I wonder if anybody remembers any of the following bikers. Billy Dale, Maurice and Babs,John Brearley.Alan Howerd.Colin,Roy Marsh,Malc,Joan Langston,Janice,Carol,Little Joan,Alan,Derek.
  16. I'm not a football fan but I am pretty sure Bronco Lane was sacked for deliberately throwing matches for money. In fact I remember a couple of bikers coming in one night, getting out their fags and asking him if he sold matches.A rather ugly encounter developed as this was apparently a regular request. He deserved all he got.
  17. All good comments on this subject.I wrote to the outlet and also sent a readers letter to the Stocksbridge "Look Local" newspaper about these dangers over a year ago.The outlet never replied, the newspaper didn't print my letter.Dransfield must have known about the problems but has chosen to do nothing about them.
  18. Yes I agree with you,I knew it as The Squirrel in the 60s.I can't remember Dyson having it either. He had a shop and a yard just past Catch Bar Lane and a little shop almost bang opposite on the other side of the road.Seem to remember he also had a shop at the bottom of Greaves Street.
  19. Is that so all the litter left by the local residents can be cleared up?
  20. I fail to see what the problem is.Most people put what they want in the bottom half of any coloured bin and then the correct stuff on the top.
  21. No it isn't,and there are two other freezer shops within a stones throw of Farmfoods which are much cheaper.
  22. Not surprised they are closing down I gave up on this shop ages ago.Their policy of buy one for X pounds or buy 3 or even 5 for a saving is ridiculous.I only want one and I refuse to let them fleece me for it.
  23. The tramlines from Middlewood Terminus to Hillsborough Park have now been replaced and everything is back to normal. As a resident of that area I was really pleased the expected traffic congestion never materialised, sensible diversions and one way systems made everything run smoothly. What really impressed me was how the workers grafted.I passed literally dozens of times and whether it was day or night there was nobody leaning on shovels, stood talking or generally lazing about, they were always hard at it it in extremely hot and dusty conditions.I know a few miseries complained about the noise, but this was a classic case of a small few being inconvenienced for the benefit of many.So thanks a lot to this excellent workforce, you have really earned every penny of your wages.
