  1. I saw a Hercules flying over Higger Tor within an hour of that sighting. Also saw a Tiger Moth biplane earlier in the day over Stanage Edge.
  2. I remember the Parkes brothers in a different context to St Paul's though. They were John and Tony. John being the elder by a year. Their dad was British and mum was actually German although her ethnic origin may have been different. They had a sister who may have been called Teresa but I can't remember that with anything like certainty. I do remember her working in the restaurant at the Beauchief Hotel in the early/mid seventies. I had heard that certainly Tony and possibly John had emigrated to Australia in the early seventies. Tony was employed at Hepworths tailors on Fargate in about 1971 and I have an even vaguer memory of the family moving to the Retford Road area after Charnock, or it may be that they moved from there to Charnock.
  3. I had a number of company cars from the London Road branch through the seventies and remember Roger Wostenholme very well. He lived near me on the Arbourthorne and for a period at the end of the sixties he drove a Zephyr 5. It had one malfunctioning cylinder so he took the piston out. I think he had a mate called Kevin Mennell or Meynell that worked there too.
  4. My great aunt did. But I can't remember her name! I'll ask around relatives but don't hold your breath because the ones that will remember are al in their 80's and not the fleetest of minds. I know she lived on the left hand side as you went up the hill and her house was to the left of the entry as you looked from the road. I think she was a carriage cleaner for the LMS and British Railways for the period in question and she worked with one of her neighbours in the same job.
  5. Not S6 but close enough is "The Grind" at the corner of Green Lane and Bowling Green Street near Kelham Island. Wide choice of excellent food but it gets full at peak times. I go there early Sunday morning before the local hipsters emerge. Never been disappointed and they're always accommodating for dietary requirements and personal preferences.
  6. I would agree with that just going on my own experience. I think behaviour in the area improved between 2006 and 2012 but since then there has been a steady slide downwards again. Since the latter end of 2012 the Community Police Officers are noticeably absent and the number of what look like undesirables hanging about in vehicles after dark seems to be higher with what I assume are drug dealers attracting younger element to their cars near the high rise and on Liberty Drive. I have reported the latter but nothing seems to have happened. Behaviour of pupils from the secondary school seems to be in decline again after a marked improvement after the early 2000's when the school was always in the papers for it's poor record on behaviour. They look nicer in their uniforms but their manners and attitude are, in my own experience, taking a steep dive.
  7. I'll support that. My uncle also contracted asbestosis after working in the steel industry as a furnaceman. All of his protective clothing contained asbestos and he died of illnesses related to the asbestosis. I remember him talking about the dangers of blue asbestos and him blaming it for being the cause of his illness. However, from memory, his contact with blue asbestos was restricted to one occasion when he was involved in stripping and replacing a furnace whereas his daily exposure to normal asbestos lasted thirty years or more.
  8. I think The Star is economically matched to its purpose and operates more or less on a shoestring. It's evident that the people producing the written content rely on spellcheckers when you see correctly spelled but inappropriate words sneaking into articles, "where" instead of "were" for example. I think mistakes of this type are becoming more frequent in all areas of life as more reliance is placed on technology and the skills of people whether they be journalists, teachers or webmasters are becoming less relevant as their jobs are being dumbed down to match the economic circumstances and the rise of technology. In short, expect more mistakes it's the way of the world
  9. I bought some bar stools and dining chairs from them and their customer service is second to none
