  1. Hi everyone! Just found this if anyone fancies a listen : https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00066yq Chestnuts on A roads, sycamores down alleys, rowans on roundabouts, and avenues of lime. Why do people care so much about urban trees? Perhaps they want to save the trees because the trees save them? Frances Byrnes' docu-drama, narrated by Robert Glenister, weaves the voices of Sheffield's tree campaigners into a dark contemporary fairytale. The poem Heartwood, a charm-against-harm, was written for Sheffield's trees by Robert MacFarlane. Cellist Tim Smedley played A Song For The Birds by Pablo Casals. The programme also features a recording of the same piece by Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Sound Design: David Thomas Director: Kate McAll A Pier production for BBC Radio 4
  2. I know someone who goes magnet fishing around Sheffield. There was an article in the Star the other week with him talking about it. Here's a link : https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/man-unearths-weapons-whilst-magnet-fishing-across-south-yorkshire-1-9319717 He also has a youtube page : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5Au9oV9G4qbyTKJmUcWWJg/videos
  3. It is the Heritage Open Days weekend this weekend and next where you can visit buildings which would not usually be open, for free. Here is a link for what's on. It might be worth a look. https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting/advanced-search
  4. Knab Farm Shop on Carterknowle does!
  5. Thank you so much for the advice Hayley1. That's really helpful. Those websites are great. I can see myself treating myself to a few things off there come payday! I will definitely be getting myself some Thread Heaven or beeswax, I had never heard of that. I only started doing a bit of embroidery as a past time, but now a couple of friends want me to do some for them. I don't think my poor fingers can bear attempting to stitch through a double layer tight weave again haha.
  6. Hi everyone! I was just wondering what other people prefer embroidering on. I am finding it tricky to find a fabric with a loose enough weave that it doesn't completely unravel the floss but that also doesn't pucker. I mostly embroider words or simple flower designs. I am also looking for a nice metallic thread if anyone has any recommendations. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  7. I am sceptical about stuff like this but I have had strange things happen when travelling on Stocksbridge Bypass. I have been in different cars, at different times of the day, on different parts of the road, and on more than one occasion heard a noise that sounds like a kind of laugh!! Eeek! It creeped me out I can tell you! The first time I put it down to the car or the road surface but I'm not so sure now...
  8. I used the home whitening kit from The Centre of Dentistry in Archer Road Sainsburys. It was £159 and worked brilliantly. Would highly recommend.
  9. I did this commute for 2 years and caught the train from both Sheffield and Dore station between 7 and 8am and caught the 16.45 train back. If you get on at Dore you will struggle to get a seat, especially if they only put on 2 carriages instead of 4 which used to happen quite a lot. The trains from Dore to Manchester are every half an hour. If you go from Dore, there isn't much shelter which isn't ideal when the weather is horrid. However if you do go from there, my friend has a coffee van there which is fab. In my experience, the trains were often delayed and very full and I frequently had to stand up for the whole journey or at least up to Stockport which is infuriating when you think about the amount you pay for a monthly/yearly ticket. The return journey was just as busy, if not busier. After 2 years, I really had had enough of the commute and left my job for something a bit more local. The good point is that you end up meeting lots of lovely people when you get chatting because the train is delayed or cancelled. I still keep in touch with some of my train friends. Also, the views of the countryside are beautiful.
  10. Knab's Farm Shop on carterknowle have some lovely pies. If I was to eat out for pie, I would go to the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road. Yum!
  11. Maybe call around and see if you can help out at a local luncheon club? I have been volunteering at one for about a year now and absolutely love it. My friend volunteers at a food bank so you could see if they need helpers? It's a really lovely thing to do. What lovely kids
  12. I have always fancied a pair of Ernest Wright scissors myself. I noticed the antique shop in the old bank on the corner of Alderney Road - Queens Road had some in last time I had a look around.
  13. We have some in our garden in Carterknowle and my friend has seen some in hers further up on Bannerdale.
  14. Hi everyone! I was just wondering whether anyone knew anywhere that sells parts for an Asus Zenfone 2? I need a replacement charging port dock and didn't fancy waiting weeks for one being sent from China. Thanks!
