  1. I just don't fathom this - why make that whole stretch of road unavailable for parking? Saying it isn't safe is just bizarre. If that restriction is in place it could make simple tasks like unloading shopping with 2 small kids a right pain. But then you have this whole stretch of empty road where people have parked for years and not caused any problems to rub salt in It'll also be fun come the snow in Feb/March if people have to park on the hill rather than the safer option of Roach Rd. yeah make the double yellows round the corners where you get some idiots parking [never seen a crash though] but leave it at that. Or save some council money and just get the traffic wardens to wander up after they have finished watching for illegal parking on the school run to Hunter House Primary and ticket any cars on the corner. People will soon learn. To summarize how I see the scheme: it is to aid residents to stop commuters/shoppers clogging the street in the daytime. In reality the daytime is not an issue (unless near the bottom on school run times). And no shopper / commuter would ever park at the top of Hunter House etc. So really, we now have the privilege of paying for a scheme that will reduce the amount of parking available and definitely make parking near our house alot bigger issue than it is now. For example, a student house near us has 4 cars. I bet after this scheme comes in they will still have 4 cars. There will be less spaces (due to plans for Roach Rd) so basically no-one wins. The only way a scheme like this could work is to make it more expensive for a 2nd car (more than £30) and the 3rd car stuipdly expensive. So I totally don't understand the introduction of this scheme, as £10, £30 isn't going to sort out the council's finances. I suspect it is a long term thing where people take it as a given and the council start to crank up the rates just like with council tax. Sorry for the rant - I'm just a perplexed and miffed resident
  2. Thanks for clarifying my questions. Got another on the back of one of the answers - if no waiting means double yellow lines, does that mean for the 100 metres or so from where Roach Rd meets Hunter House Rd there will be double yellows on Roach Rd? If so I can't fathom it - this will loose us about 10 parking spots. Parking is only a problem evening/night through out the week or the early morning at a weekend - and only in term time. We have absolutely no problem parking in June, July or August at any time. However, if they start reducing the number of spaces then we will have an issue.
  3. We live on Hunter House Rd and will be writing to object. We are only a one car family and I do not see how the proposals will benefit us, in reality they will make things worse. If the charge for the 2nd car was higher and then the third car significantly higher then it may make a difference. But charging £10, then £30 for every subsequent car is not going to put anyone off. The main problem on Hunter House Rd is the number of rental properties and quite a few houses probably take up more than their fair share of parking. Is an extra £30 really going to put anyone off? I doubt it so it will bring no benefit, and the reality is the number of actual spaces will be reduced as they double yellow a good distance from all corners. I wonder if this has gathered pace because of the problems the bin lorry etc has. Some collections have been left till the following day because of parking on the corner of Roach Rd and Hunter House Rd preventing the bin lorry getting round. On a side note - did anyone find the leaflet to be very vague? It did not answer some questions that I guess most people will want to ask so maybe others who already have permit parking can help: 1. Is the permit just for the road you live on? Or can you park on roads in the vicinity. i.e we are on Hunter House so could we park on Roach Rd? 2. What do visitors do? In Cardiff they have visitor permits for each household or do we have to pay a 2nd permit when family come etc? 3. The part of Roach Rd near Hunter House was all marked as 'waiting prohibited at all times' - what does this mean? Can residents park here if they have a permit or is it a zone where all people can stay say a max of 4 hrs?
  4. glad just seen his thread. My missus just rang me at work saying a GKR karate person had come to the door and will be back later to go through in detail as she knew I had suggested karate in the past. Looks like this will save us some time so thanks:) Out of interest is 5 yrs old too early to learn karate or another martial art? If not what is the best martial art for a 5 year old to learn and is there a good club where he can go and try it out first (ideally near S11)? Thanks
  5. good builders (or other trades) rarely advertise never mind poking thorough letterbox. If they're good enough word of mouth gets around. the same goes to this forum and trusting random 'recommandations'. If you need a builder or a plumber pm me and i can recommend who we had and show you photos of their good work.
  6. Can't believe the OP is getting so much grief! Isn't it common courtesy to shift for the elderly, pregnant ladies, mum's with pushchairs, those with a disability, etc? I used to get the bus everyday and can't believe how many people won't get up. I've got knackered knees but would still offer my seat.
  7. I went to Kanchanaburi and saw the graves of those that lost their lives on the Death Railway made famous by the Bridge Over The River Kwai. The reality hits home when you see that many graves and it was amazing how immaculate it all was. I'm not an emotional type but that sure did tug at my heart strings and made me feel overwhelmed with sadness. Now when I hear the last post being played it seems more poignant. Personally I think we should never forget.
  8. I used to cycle from near the abbey pub in woodseats into town and so did a few people i worked with. The preferred route into town seemed to be straight down Chesterfield Rd and then either up little London Rd or the road that takes you down bramall lane to the roundabout with decathlon on it and then up to arundal gate. back from town was straight down london rd and abbeydale rd. Then depeniding where in woodseats you want you have woodseats rd, fraser rd or the next one along from Fraser rd past aldi on archer rd. Personally i went up Fraser Rd. When I started I was nervous about the heavy traffic so went along cycle paths to get into town and you end up going past Virgin. With this route you have to stop every 2 minutes, cross juntctions etc and I soon realised I felt alot safer just going down chesterfield rd. If memory serves me right it is about 20 mins cycle.
  9. is this thread only for listing car boot sales? Or any car boot query? Sorry if the former for posting this: I've never been to one but want to get some cheapish buckets of lego for my kids - are car boots good for this sort of thing?
  10. been there for a few work dos and it has always been decent. Bit cramped maybe but always enjoyed it and you can take your own wine
  11. After these posts I looked at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2282864/posts It sounds like some film plot and maybe you could buy into the fact that H151 is lab made and released to make money fom vaccines. But what would be the point in what she says is to actually use the vaccine to kill people? Who would gain? Also if it was credible would we have not seen it mentioned in some mainstream news? I think it is codswollop...
  12. They said "As it is we had to get a friend to drive all our rubbihs to be stored in a friend garage." so if borrowing it to take to a garage why not a tip? Unless they didn't really mean rubbish and it was their belongings...
  13. Q. what do you call a leeds fan with 3 sheep? A. A pimp Q. What do you call a Leeds fan with half a brain? A. Gifted
  14. i needed 8 skips doing up my house - sure wish the council would treat us to skips and we pay council tax! Maybe you could have borrowed your friend's car to go to the tip?
  15. a lick of white emulsion and gloss hides a multitude of sins and just because they have been renovated does not mean it is not a shoddy job. We bought a house that was previously a student house. Some of the cowboy stuff was sheer dangerous i.e no lintel over new inserted windows (used expanding foam and the whoul course of bricks had moved and the window was 1.5m wide). A wall obviously not tied in but just plasterboarderd over. Wet rot where the bath and showers were where leaks had been left. But at the end of the year everything just gets whitewashed and the students are none the wiser. Not all landlords take shortcuts - I've had good and bad. Like with students, some will be less hygenic but some will look after their gaffe
  16. Guess it depends on the size of room you need. We have two units at storage king near meadowhall - for 2 units it is about £60 a month.
  17. Gonna sound old now - we live near the park and the bass seemed real high for pride so we could hear and feel the music inside the house - got a bit tedious after a few hours. It sounded like someone was messing round with the volume as well. The fair ran for quite a few days just before and whilst you can hear the hum and the screams etc when in your garden, the bass didn't make our house vibrate. I actually said to the missus I like the sound of the fair, it sorts of remind you of being on holiday but I'm sure i would get sick of it if it was there all the time! I have nothing against either event but the bass was a bit annoying at pride. But hey, that is maybe the price you have to pay for living close to a lovely park and to be honest i'm more than willing to put up with it as it is good having events in the area. Gives the place a bit of a buzz.
  18. Try Greshams or Arnold Laver near Meersbrook S8. We got some double tourus which is quite big, not too sure if is quite as big as 260mm. We did have some old Victorain skirting (must have been taller than 300mm) and couldn't get it anywhere. Our joiner made some matching stuff out of MDF and different bits of beading. Once it was painted you need a real close look to tell the difference. We redid the most of the skirting in our house with regency timber skirting and if i had the choice again i would use MDF (don't have to mess around with knotting solution, primer bringing up the grain etc). Decorators may have a different opinion though...
  19. I work for a bank and the IT security have informed us that this is not a hoax.
  20. Personally I find this thread distasteful given the timing. 20 years on and the grieving will have been brought to the forefront of the minds of those that are suffering (think if you lost your 10 yr old etc) and some people here are saying blame the scousers, they killed their own. Maybe those that post comments along those lines should be more sensitive and think what grief it might cause someone who is raw with grief. Fair enough there are those that take the michael out of Munich even a scouser throwing an inflatable airplane on the concourse at OT and singing about whose that on the runway and Liverpool don't seem to give the same emphasis to Heysel but that is no reason to twist the knife over hillsborough. Sure the large amount of fans will have added to a bad situation. But if I recall there was drunkeness and a large amouint of ticketless fans at Athens a couple of years back where there were problems but no-one died because the police had cordons etc. If the cause was to do with being late and drunkeness then how come there aren't deaths at every sporting event or concert? The failing at hillsborough was the lack of police control and the fatal mistake of not shutting the tunnel. That is south yorkshire police's fault. Also Sheffield Wednesday and the FA have some culpabilty - give 16 turnstiles to 25,000 Liverpool fans whereas Forest fans had 40. Also the bad signage around the ground to direct people from the central pits. In football terms i can't stand Liverpool but this isn't about football - it is about a very sad affair and people need to remember that 96 people died.
  21. Cheers alchresearch - can i ask did the ticking noise go on all the time. I spoke to a mate whose 306 driveshaafts went and they said it was when only turning corners. Ours makes the noise all the time except for freewheeling. ta
  22. it was the missus that took it to the garage so 'clean up' is probably her paraphrasing. We trust them though - taken it there a few times and they've even done a job for free once! We weren't looking to trade it in - hoped to run till it dies! Air con and central locking have already gone but that would cost too much to fix. Cheers for the heads up about the driveshafts - I'll take it to a another garage and see what they say. Can't afford to to get it fixed or even worse a replacement car so fingers crossed
  23. I was hoping someone out there who is a bit mechanically minded can offer some advice I drive a peugeot 306 estate and it is making a funny noise when driving. I took it to a local garage and they said it sounds like the gearbox. If it just needs cleaning up it will cost about £600 but when they take it apart it might warrant more work. My dad took his peuguot into a dealer today in his home town and asked them what it costs to replace a gearbox and they said could be between 2K and 3K. Do these figures sound about right? The car is a 51 reg and done about 60K miles. We can't afford 2k so don't want to risk taking it in expecting to pay 600 and then find that jumps loads. Do you reckon I would be better to part ex it and get another car? ta Jon
  24. are you being serious? People buying shopping at asda so there is no credit crunch! How often do you get a loan to go and do the groceries? There are plenty of people losing there jobs. Construction is down and the knock on effect to other jobs like architects, planners, estate agents, solicitors etc is on the news daily. I even know a gardener who has been laid off so it is just not the preserve of city bankers. The longer the credit is harder to come by, more small companies go under or stuggle to satisfy their creditors and that has ramifications higher up the food chain. The pound is low so you'll find holidays abroad dearer and the price of imported white goods will rise. Also people's pension plans that were invested in shares have been reduced in value dramatically. Imagine that, working hard all your live to save for a decent retirement and having it dashed because of some city high flyers backing the wrong horse in the US sub prime market (and probably taking home a a hefty bonus on the back of it with no ramifications)
  25. I was chatting with someone who lives on mitchell rd near the abbey lane junction and they never even had a letter to tell them about the work. They aren't happy as it means they can't turn into mitchell rd from abbey lane just to get home. As for the congestion - a lot of problems are caused by people parking on the corners for the garage and the cafe If they made these double yellows for say 10 metres into mitchell rd either side and enforced it then the congestion in and out of mitchell rd would not get as bad (not that it is that bad anyhow).
