  1. Amazon are good for spares... although fitting laptop parts is pretty fiddley unless you know what you're doing. I'd recommend getting the guys above to do it for you - less hassle!
  2. SATA caddy working well. It;s found two partitions on the HDD - 80GB and 811GB. 80GB formatted and now in the process of formatting the 811GB. IDE drive also here. Going to use that in the new computer instead. Thanks all for the help.
  3. Still not been able to sort the drive out. Windows 2000 formatted it and found only 127 GB of 1TB. Upgrade to XP (for networking) caused the same BSOD problem as before I've bitten the bullet and ordered a SATA caddy to format the drive and a new IDE HDD for the computer Got beat
  4. Thanks all for the advice. I've bought a 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium laptop which should be delivered in a few days
  5. Wow. This is turning into quite a battle! Just put an IDE master HDD Into the computer and disabled the SATA one. Same problem with XP and won't even read Win 7 which leads me to think that it's a problem with the SATA disk drive. Currently, Win 2000 is formatting the IDE HDD in preparation for its install. Once done, I'll format the SATA drive and take it from there. Thanks for the help so far, everyone!
  6. Thanks for that. When I say 'transfer', what I effectively mean is a fresh install but transfer the licence.
  7. Can someone explain the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit? I'm looking at a new laptop and am not sure whether a 64 bit computer would be suitable, specifically; can I transfer Photoshop CS3, Office 2007, from old computer to new one and it still work? Thanks
  8. It's this one http://exehub.blogspot.com/2011/01/msi-g31tm-p25-msi-ms-7529-ver.html
  9. Thanks for the kind offer, however, it's looking like I'm going to put in an IDE HDD and format the SATA drive that way ...although I'm very impressed with Ubuntu!
  10. How do you do this??? HDD seems fine according to Ubuntu. It's a legit disk and is 32bit same as computer
  11. I'm in the disk utility but can't see where to create a partition My options are 'edit partition' (only one full partition on which Ubuntu is installed) Delete partition/format volume (can't do this because partition is mounted) Any ideas?
  12. Widows 7 boots perfectly well form the DVD. Gets to the point where it is about to create the file system and stops
  13. Booting from the CD You're right, it should give me the option to format and create partitions but it crashes before it gets there. Same with XP and W2000
  14. I'm running Linux on the computer from a flash drive. What now? (Never used Linux before!) I've browsed to 'computer' but can only see 'file system' and the disk in the DVD drive listed.
  15. It's a new MSI computer but can't find any option relating to the above :/
  16. I've got a new computer with no operating system. It's got a SATA hard drive and I'm having trouble installing any opertaing system on it: Windows 7 -> cannot install Windows XP -> BSOD Windows 2000 -> Cannot create a formatted partition It's a 1 TB brand new hard drive. Whilst attempting to install the operating system I seem to have ended up with 2 un-partitioned spaces! In the old days I would have just used a WIn98 floppy startup disk to format the HDD, however, there is no FDD in this machine. Can anyone help? TIA
