  1. the underground rifle range behind the medical centre seems to have been forgoten,I know it was there because I ran it and held the firearms certificate for a number of years
  2. my mother clara stocks lived on apple street and would often mention the cornthwaits,searles and richardsons , she worked on one of the early machines for cutting files
  3. remember the garden well, a mate and I were done for truancy and our parents fined, mr godfrey the head master {after we said we didn't seem to be taught much] said we could look after the schoolgarden. had a lovely greenhouse with a wood burner stove and a dart board but often could not see the board due to cigarette smoke, happy days but rip pete & pete { 1952/53}

  7. glad to see some posters can see the funny side,i hope that if ever they find themselves in the same possition they dont forget to post about it so we can all have a laugh
  8. have you seen the article on google news where a man was refused service at the lane top kfc because he was in a mobility scooter, when interviewed kfc said it was agains their policy to serve such vehicles at a drive through, perhaps it would be a good thing if we all stop trading with this uncaring petty company
  9. mam worked as a buffer and later as a file cutter so her language was very colourfull,but at times was very profound so if me or my sister ever said that we wished we had something she would always say "wish in one hand sh*t in the other and see which gets full first"
  10. don't know if anyone still around can confirm a dealer called quincies out outibridge way, they had a variety of bikes but always had vincent & hrd's, once went to buy a black shadow there on credit of course but after talking to a chap who come to pay his bill for a repair to his rapide i knew i would never be able to buy the bike and have it repaired when needed so bought a t100 instead
  11. the name of the machine you talk about was schiess-defries, due to the faceplate being at floor level the gearbox etc were in an undergound room so in the event of heavy rain it flooded out, floating out all the gear oil, it covered everything and was a vile job to clear up
  12. i ran the rifle club for a number of years, took over from an old guy who i believe was the works postman , he walked with a severe limp but i'm sorry to say i can't remember his name,after i left i think a young man called brian jessop took over the club
  13. can anyone remember the temperance hall near to the chapel, you went through a gateway and the hall was up a wooden stairway at the rear of the courtyard, sometimes held dances for teens and kids but they had more adults watching for couples dancing too close than dancers,also my sister taught at the chapel sunday school
  14. knew your dad, he was a friend of my dad and i spent many times in his kitchen watching him make and repair fishing rods and such,my son may still have tackle made by your dad, such are memories made of. regards :- kinjuro
  15. the man mentioned in peters post regarding delivering milk on adsetts st from a small van could well refer to a gent called colin mortimer who along with his wife ran a grocery shop on carlisle road, the dairy was situated in their and our back yard, on sundays he would clear the churns etc from the back of the van, put some carpet down and take his family (wife and two daughters) and myself to far off places like clumber park, the botanical gardens and even as far as fox house, wondrous times to a young lad, regards kinjuro
