  1. I worked in the River Don instrument department, spending time in heat treatment and Izods. For me my time was 4 months at a wonderful Museum . A short time since every day begging for work to do. Asking for something to d I often had the reply.......... " F *** Hell ... not you again ! "Tek a walk ter electric furnaces ".......... I soon took a walk in to a real world of business As it happens I found work, eventually founded my own Companies and bought factories. I do feel privileged to have seen the incredible machinery. I saw the end when I discovered a worker to staff ratio of 1 to 10. That seemed crazy to an 18 year old lad. Many workers didn't......... but simply sat in domino and card schools that were everywhere. I found it sad that our Sheffield industrial heritage seemed to have lost the plot.... Pete
  2. A fundamental truth in the Private sector is that and employer must have the expectation of an employee first making a contribution to his cost, followed by a contribution equal to his cost and then after, a contribution that benefits the company. Why else would anyone employ? The state can finances public sector work simply by taxing all those who produce profit. ( and the ones who after tax simply try to eat every day) Becoming employed in the private sector requires thought and even calculation, to be able to demonstrate a simple understanding of how business works and what difference you can make! If you go unprepared for interview; have not applied your learning and research to the core business that you hope to join, then there is little chance of employment. Qualifications are no more than a personal reference book, that give you the best chance of applying knowledge. If you cannot apply knowledge, then sure supplying labour is also a virtue. Brain or hands, they must each be used for the benefit of the employer. Waiving stamped certificates or opening soft pink hands is not a ticket to employment. If it seems too hard to find a job, then also perhaps too many people find it harder to make a business and to make those jobs. I started with nothing. I had a good education but never showed any certificate. I was never shy of work or tools and ended with a board of Directors. I made good secure well paid jobs and found some great people to enjoy as friends, workers and staff. We are all on the same escalator daily rising to success Understanding and caring for people is everyone's duty. A duty of care is not just a phrase in safety manuals ! Interview success hinges upon the perception of what your contribution could be and how it will grow for mutual benefit. Returning to the topic title........there is no such thing as an unskilled job! Strong body or strong mind, both exhibit special talent. Many people either run themselves down or pump themselves up Birth gave us what we have and life offers us what we might achieve ! Our task is to contribute to the lives of other people and do this with a good heart and realistic expectations. Thinking this way is the right approach for life and also for work. Good employers need good people with a variety of skills. At interview first showing that you understand the need to make a contribution and then that you are a good team player, goes most of the way to appointment. I hope this is helpful. Pete
  3. Did everyone receive a classical education at Frechville Secondary Modern School ?
  4. Vernon, Gres......... Great to know you are both well! Peter Dronfield calling LOL. I wondered what happened to the only true musicians I ever met. I saw Vernon only a few times and recall him best by Dave Fox's party. Him being locked in the loo LOL Gres at the time of the Memphis Six was a musical inspiration. Frankly it was wasted upon me since I had belief but no talent; except to find bookings LOL I imagined that Vern & Gres would have had musical careers to match talent and the 1960's timing. I am retired in Thailand after building Companies. I turned my hand to finding contract work rather than gigs LOL Anyway, I hope you see this message. My nusic these days is eastern with a smattering of Karaoke. ( I could not sing very well either but improve) I wonder what happened to Lee ? Regards Peter PS The Blue Shed Theatre Sheffield is mine, but closing soon. Its going to be a factory again LOL Wish I had this in the '60's in support of a new band !
