  1. What is the last thing people need during a global pandemic ? Answer: Vaccine wars. Politicians are playing a daft game which ultimately puts me and thee's life at risk. Thank goodness we have the Novavax waiting for approval.
  2. Mister M, Back in the day there was plenty of HIV denialists. Swayne is the Cov-19 equivalent. The organisation Act Up (I was a member) came up with a slogan aimed at the denialists. "It's the virus stupid". Similarly for Swanye: "It's the virus stupid".
  3. El Cid, Thanks for your considered reply. Only time will tells us the vaccines effectiveness in the community. I'm sincerely hoping that effective therapeutics will eventually emerge; that can be applied to treating the illnesses caused by this virus and its variants.
  4. El Cid, The link you provided makes some interesting points. This one makes me raise an eyebrow: Is it your view that older people shouldn't trust the Cov-19 vaccines ,because the testing was "rushed" ? The link you provided is basically saying the same as the Abstract Because of the above: We are urged by our GPs to have an annual Flu vaccination-even with the Flu vaccine relatively low effectiveness. As we get older our T lymphocyte production declines. Vaccination gives us a bit of an immune boost. It's better to have some protection than none at all. IMO it's going to be the same with Covid vaccination. The mRNA vaccines appear to stimulate a CD4/CD8 cell response as well as an antibody response-which is good for older people. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2814-7 Weighing up the evidence needed to make an informed choice to have a vaccination or not .I'm going to have my second mRNA vaccination as soon as it's available. So I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I'm certainly going to follow closely whether or not over 65yrs old in Europe get vaccinated. There's no way you or I can answer that question.
  5. El Cid, No there are not hiding it. Why would they want to hide it ? See Table 2 page 7. The effectiveness of the vaccine across age groups looks good to me. What is it you want to that cannot be determined from the Efficacy results ? How many neutralising antibodies /T cells does an eighty year old produces compared to a thirty year old ? Does a seventy year old suffer more side effects than a twenty year old ? https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/documents/product-information/covid-19-vaccine-moderna-epar-product-information_en.pdf
  6. Anna B, I share your sentiments.Everyday I say a prayer for humanity's deliverance from this pestilence.
  7. El Cid. See the, "Therapeutic Indication ". https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/human/EPAR/covid-19-vaccine-moderna (it's a bit of a read) Age range 18yrs to 94yrs . It works across that age range. Note: Just because there was less than 10% of the volunteers over 70. Doesn't mean it doesn't work for the over 70s. I'm over 70 and I've had the Pfizer. I don't intend to get Cov-19. But if I am unfortunate and catch it. I have every confidence, that it better damn well work for me.
  8. Things we have to do to avoid a future of one pandemic after another.A tactic of rioting and looting isn't going to cut the mustard. It is going to take a pretty clued in young generation to bring it about. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/to-prevent-the-next-pandemic-end-unequal-access-to-natural-resources/
  9. A new study by Moderna and the Vaccine Research Center at the NIAID has found that its vaccine is effective against the new virus variants, that are found in Britain and South Africa. The British variant had no effect on antibody levels, the South African mutation did, but antibody levels were still high enough to give protection. Moderna is developing a version of the vaccine aimed at the South African variant that can also be used as a booster shot a year after people receive their two doses. All they have to do is get their finger out and meet their promised vaccine targets. I hope the Pfizer vaccine does the same-and they meet their promised vaccine targets;and stop dicking about with their production facilities. Get your vaccination and stay well you all.
  10. Thirsty Relic We know what he is saying,"follow the rues". In the link I posted( Below). He's probably been onto the Behavioural Psychologist. Who have told him,"the general public need another large dose of scary mary ". Viral load is a significant factor in shedding virus and contracting severe illness. We don't hear very much about Viral Load and the role it plays in transmission.
  11. There's endless talk about Transmission. The ideal goal for vaccine makers is to make Sterilising Vaccines. However ,if the current Cov-19 vaccines do not have sterilising properties (that's not proven yet) all is not lost. https://theconversation.com/coronavirus-few-vaccines-prevent-infection-heres-why-thats-not-a-problem-152204
  12. This link succinctly sums up the difference between:Vatiant, Strain and Mutation. It's worth knowing the difference. "Arrrg! It's a new strain" , Is bandied around willy nilly all over the News. Take no notice of the comment ,"Janneke 222" ,at the bottom of the article. A virus is not alive. It does not fight for its existence. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/covid-strain-mutation-variant-england-b1777724.html
  13. El Cid I've got one like that. It goes on my wrist. I have one that goes on my finger-like the one they use in hospital. The one that goes on my finger, I bought from Lloyds Pharmacy Heeley Green. Cost me £45 - but worth every penny.
  14. Chance to make your own mind up vis-a-vis delaying the second dose. https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/01/20/revisiting-the-uks-strategy-for-delaying-the-second-dose-of-the-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine/
  15. El Cid and Thirsty Relic, Thank you for your insights. This whole affair is like riding a Roller Coaster through the tunnels of the Chost Train-sickening and frightening, Can this bunch of murderous clowns(Government ) do anything right? My inclination when dealing with medication is to follow what it says on the leaflet. For one brief moment ,I thought the government had the people's best interest at heart-but sadly not so. Dishing out the vaccinations is a matter of life and death for the recipients. Consequently it has to be done correctly-we're not lab rats to be experimented upon. Who is in charge of it all- uncle Fester from the Adams Family ?
  16. Get ready for this kind of reporting. Conflating vaccination with mortality and morbidity. Now,and in the not too distant future-vaccination supplies permitting -very, very large populations will be vaccinated. The upshot means that we are going to see the usual run of mortality and morbidity that occurs across large samples. For instance,if you take 10 million people and just pretend to give them a vaccination (a thought experiment). In the next couple of months you would expect to see about: 4,000 heart attacks, 4,000 strokes, 9,000 new diagnoses of cancer. About 14,000 of that 10 million will die, out of usual all-causes mortality. That’s how many people die and get sick anyway. I'm anticipating a media campaign that tries to persuade me that there's a connection between all that mortality/morbidity and Cov-19 vaccination. I want my second vaccination -and damn quick.
  17. A person who has lived many years. There's chronological age and biological age. The two old farts in the Muppets. Old mother Riley. And if you remember this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2fqjsijaMM etc, etc.
  18. Tinfoilhat. Yes. "Sit in that room over there. You can leave at the time written on the piece of paper I've just given you". Unfortunately, no tea and biscuits.
  19. Riffraff. I'm registered with Heeley Green Surgery. You are quite right the Belgrave Med Centre. Might I suggest you phone Heeley Surgery and ask them about when she might receive her vaccination. When I phoned-about 10 days ago-they informed me that they were working through the upper age group and would get round the 70+ about the 11th Jan. So it's worth a inquiry.
  20. Cyclecar. Congrats. Had my BNT162b2 vaccination on Thursday 14th Jan,16. 20hrs , at the Matthews Medical Centre. It all went very smoothly and professionally. It was a bit of an epic getting there. Had to put chains on the front -winter tyres- wheels of my little Suzuki Ignis 4x4 to get out of my Crescent. My God! Winter tryes, chains and 4x4 ,and this is in Sheffield -and not the Alps. I'm very pleased with the Vax I was given. It has a very good CD4/CD8 cell profile. As a consequence of having the Vax.I'm less anxious now. Note: No side effects whatsoever. PS, No date given on my card for my second one.
  21. Apelike, Thanks for that very interesting link. If you go to the Comments Section .Janet provides an equally interesting link.
  22. Pfizer vaccine appears to work against variant and S.A variant. Caution , The report is a pre-print and has not yet been peer reviewed. But if true, then this is very good news indeed. https://www.livescience.com/pfizer-vaccine-effective-new-mutation-coronavirus.html?utm_source=Selligent&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20210111 https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-the-new-variant-of-sars-cov-2/ Masses of opinions in the above link. Well worth a browse through if you want to jog along with the Profs and Experts.
  23. Fancypants. That is sad news. I do hope your neighbour recovers. Hospitals are doing their best to mitigate hospital transmission of Cov-19. The link I provide will give you an insight as to what is going on. I must admit, that the last thing I want is to be admitted into hospital for anything other than Cov019 treatment. https://fullfact.org/health/coronavirus-transmission-hospitals/
  24. For those of you who are interested in this debate. My own personal opinion of this brand of ethics, is that it's a prime example of repugnant authoritarian Utilitarianism. An example of how to tailor a proposition to the outcome that is desired. I sincerely hope the UK does not adopted the strategy outlined https://jme.bmj.com/content/early/2020/11/09/medethics-2020-106821
