  1. Just spotted this Parkrun attendance at Sheffield Castle parkrun for 7th June = 37 National parkrunner of the week Sheffield's Jack Brannan - https://uk-mg42.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch?.rand=b9ujeincjdu11#8429611952 ..............and already logged on 14th June - Sheff Castle = 41 That's got to be a pb! ;-) ---------- Post added 15-06-2014 at 15:11 ---------- Sheffield & Rotherham parkrun attendances for 14/6/2014:- 43 - Concord 142 - Graves 115 - Hillsborough 41 - Castle 479 - Hallam Total = 820 RVp - Cancelled due to another event in the park. 45 - Rotherham Total = 45 Graves had 57 pbs including all the top 7 and 2 age group records - Good conditions but I think a very quick first five dragged them all on.
  2. I have an aversion to these high profile 'charity' organisations. The entry costs £15 't' shirts £8. Participants have a minimum amount of sponsorship to raise - although I don't think this is enforced. Cancer Research UK say:- "Did you know that 80p in every pound you raise goes directly towards our work to beat cancer?" Am I cynical or are you good ladies getting ripped off for all your efforts.
  3. ...and the Tour achieves this, to a point. If an unexpected rider gets into yellow by a successful break his team will often protect him. The time trial stages are 'the race of truth'. But lets not kid ourselves. I remember Ralph Schumacher being told not to race Damon Hill at Spa.. . . three times before he answered. F1 drivers often have 'radio problems' and 'misunderstandings' to disobey team orders. A rider may show that he is better, on a particular day, like Froome did two years ago. But in cycling a single rider cannot win by himself. Therefore team discipline has to be, and is, stronger. The team managers cannot allow open or covert competition within the team. If they did their team would fail 99% of the time.
  4. There are 5 things common to everyone of the 414 parkrun's in the world:- 1. Every Saturday at the same start time in the same place. (For England and Wales that's 9am.) 2. Same Distance - 5k 3. Timed 4. Cafe nearby for refreshments and chat 5. Absolutely FREE. Graves Park parkrun starts near the top carpark. Entrance at the Hemsworth Road/Bunting Nook junction. Don't forget to register before Friday night if you want a time. http://www.parkrun.org.uk/graves/
  5. Sheffield & Rotherham parkrun attendances for 7-6-14. 42 - Concord 116 - Graves 91 - Hillsborough 37 - Castle 331 - Hallam Total = 617 No RVp owing to another Event in the park. 34 - Rotherham Clifton Park Total = 34 I was at Wolverhampton in a manicured Victorian Park with wide paths and all the trimmings - fountain - bandstand - topiary - playground. There was a bit of standing water but it didn't rain during the run, Kilometer markers and no corners helped me to my quickest time this year. Brilliant
  6. Why not? 1. The cost for a start. 2. How much does the slick TV advert cost. 3. What % of the money raised goes to good causes. IMO this brand lost its credibility a long time ago. Answer any of the above questions would be a start. No 1. is easy but put it anyway
  7. Weird, maybe - but I find reading previous posts 'en block' gives a good picture of whether they are genuine, thoughtful, thought provoking, informative, timewasters, glass half empty'ers, pickers, knockers, comics, bigots, etc. All in all - whether they are worth an answer. (Don't mistake this answer as my judgement on the worthiness of any posts.)
  8. I just had a quick research of some of the anti posters on this thread. For people who "don't care" and "couldn't give a damn" they are sure spending a lot of time saying so. Also, my goodness they are against a lot of things and people. Are we doing any good responding to them? It's a life, but not as I know it. So sad.
  9. It's done now and the UKIP balloon is realising it ain't so easy. I'm interested in what their 3rd and 4th string bandwagons are. . . . after Europe and Immigration On a light hearted note:- . . . . . . and they'd vote for it Tory = Dye a poodle blue Labour = Monkey with a red rosette. Liberal = ?? UKIP = Put a bulldog in a Doc Martins Greens = ??
  10. Start as near the front as your conscience will allow, and 'ease' some of the little uns to one side for me will you. Its the only way to get to the 3rd bridge, up to the pond, with runners of your own speed. Question = How much slower (%) is grass as compared to tarmac? I yesterday I found a grass 400 metres measured out and did a 5k on the spur of the moment. It wasn't bone hard after all this rain but I really struggled to hold a decent pace (for me) even though it was flat.
  11. Creamer? Isn't google and parkrun a fantastic tool. Yes. Google = There is a an Angela in Roth who seems to be a runner. No. parkrun = No trace. Loads of Creamers but no Angela. AND I re-checked Wolverhampton and she's not there. I'm sure I saw it somewhere.
  12. sharpend - West Park near the Wolves ground, which I darn't try to spell it I'd end up with a food mixer ;-). It's a flying, flat, three lapper in a city park. The female record holder is called Creamer? Is there a Rotherham connection there? Its a distant memory but I think there is a running family of that name from Roth.
  13. Looks like half the country will be creating their time "in the bath" tomorrow. North and East = good chance South and West = no chance! Trust me to be doing Wolverhampton on parkrun day. Current forecasts show the wet coming through the West Mids at about 7:00am. But, will it get to Sunny Sheff in time for you lot to join the fun ;-)
  14. Unfortunately it has always been the way - Being against things excites people more. It's easier. Whats the most prominent YES movement there has ever been........ see what I mean.
  15. Thanks Waldo. Sheffield & Rotherham parkrun totals for 31/5/2014 57 Concord 157 Graves 93 Hillsborough 33 Castle 445 Hallam Total = 785 109 RVp 34 Rotherham Clifton park Total = 143
  16. Language evolves - forsooth twas always thus. The recent trend is a forced evolution according to the tenants of the Politically correct lobby. Nevertheless the flexibility of English (and other languages) and the human imagination is always quick to react. No-one can control the way we say things. In this case 'gay' was itself an evolution from homosexual. Consider these:- "from middle asia" "Romany - Gypsey - Traveller" "Dogging" "Wet" "Wife - spouse - partner" We know what we mean. We know what they mean.
  17. Sheffield & Rotherham parkrun totals for 31/5/2014 57 Concord 157 Graves 93 Hillsborough - - Castle * anyone do it this weeK? 445 Hallam Total = 752 109 RVp 34 Rotherham Clifton park Total = 143 No RVp for two weeks - How about a flash mob doing Sheffield Castle one week and Clifton Park the next. They are both great Roller Coaster course's.
  18. Rolled down to the foot of Jenkin Rd today and had a go, fresh and rested - did it comparatively easily. You can afford to red line it knowing that there is only 200 mtrs to go after the steepest bit. Then . . . we did the route backwards and down, a glass smooth, Jaw Bone Hill. For me, it looked really tough and a stiffer test than Jenkin Road. What do you reckon is the toughest on the South York's bit of stage 2?
  19. ....... you bet 1. Will UKIP stand up to the spotlight? Re -phrase that- Will UKIP continue to convince large numbers to vote for them in the face of the media onslaught? 2. How many of todays leaders will be in place in 18 monthes time? 3. Will Ed Milliband's election to leader be the litmus test of the preferred option system.(or whatever its called) It is for me. 4. Will Scotland go independant? 5. If they do i) Labour are finished in Westminster - 6. What then for England & Wales? 7. If they do ii) Scotland will be very left wing. Interesting times indeed.
  20. ...quite right Blake. Hallam is an exception. Socialism has appeal to educated people and they will play the election game. Labourites are a different thing, they have little to do with the idealist Socialists when in opposition. Which explains why Trade Unionists can be a conservative (small 'c') influence on the Labour party, looking after their members to the exclusion of others.
  21. Come on - lets cut to the chase tell us what we all want to know. What was it ? How much did you ask for it?
  22. Did Labour deliberately ignore UKIP knowing that their vote comes from, mainly, former, right leaning, Conservatives. Thereby splitting the right vote and letting the left in. Right leaning Conservative's make up 50% of their party (imo). If they did it worked! The UKIP in the Labour heartlands sound bite is no problem at a general election Rotherham for example would never elect a UKIP MP. Even though UKIP support there is tragic. An increased UKIP vote takes out Conservative's before it effects massive Labour majorities in the north.
  23. Cyclone Re: Parking outside my own house What have bikes got to do with it? Nothing to do with this thread. It's just that most of my disagreements on the road occur whilst i am on the bike. Its to do with the close proximity. Whereas the metal box's (cars) allow worse behavior and less two way verbal contact. ? thinks - pedestrians rarely fall out with each other and there are no rules to govern walking about. I guess that is the product of centuries of practice.
  24. .. or they have a scrap of shame left in them and when fronted up collapse in a heap of submission. Be thankful for it too.The alternative is an ignorant, self righteous, self important tosser who may react violently or vengefully. My method is to avoid direct confrontation whilst thwarting their intention and allow them a get-out, however implausible or acting stupid. I once saved my skin by saying "look it's raining and we're both getting wet". Those 'crusaders' are defying the odd's and I'm surprised they don't get punched more often. Remember there is always someone bigger and stronger and more willing to have a go. BTW - Bike v Car , the car always, always, always wins.
