  1. Thank you for all your replies. I am sure that this is still something that is remembered in Sheffield and that the ship is held great esteem. I guess I was a bit irritated; I don't really put up with p1$$-takers i'm afraid. Just so you know, I didn't serve in the Falklands, I joined after that. My experiences were in hotter, sandier places. The guy that looked after me, as a new sprog, had just survived the Atlantic Conveyor. I knew from the conversations we had that it had affected him emotionally, even though he was one of the most outgoing blokes with the best sense of humour I had met. I made HMS Sheffield my avatar mainly out of respect for those that lost their lives and who still suffer, and off course because she is affiliated to my nearest town. Thanks again.
  2. Believe you me love, I don’t let anyone pick on me from behind the safety of a computer screen.
  3. Believe me pal, SF is nowhere near as bad as some places I 've put up with. But thanks for letting me know that you didn't have a clue about it http://www.navy-net.co.uk/forum.php ---------- Post added 02-08-2013 at 02:19 ---------- You have a nail technician sticking up for you?
  4. Okay, I am new to this forum, so take it easy with me. I recently came out of the Navy and decided to join this forum. After trying to upload an avatar of HMS Sheffield , which was sank in the Falklands War in 1982, I encountered a little hostility from a single SF user on Forum News and Feedback. Is HMS Sheffield, the Shiny Sheff, still important to Sheffielders, or do you think I am getting a bit over emotional?
  5. This happened to us, when as a member of the Navy, we were forbidden to wear uniform outside base, along with our RAF collegues. We were based at RAF Wittering at the time. After a few insults were hurled at a few RAF personnel in Peterborough, the CO took a knee jerk reaction and banned us all fro wearing uniform outside the gates. The PM, at the time, voiced his concern and the CO was subsequently relieved of her command.
  6. Are there any updates on how this one turned out?
  7. As LisaJ suggests, why not just pop down the Job Orchard and pick a job down from the job tree?
  8. I would say that it is almost certainly the annual Persied meteor shower. On Saturday the a earth entered a part of the solar system that is full debris from an old comet. This results, every year, in small grain sized bits of debirs entering the atmosphere and burning up, so we see shooting stars. They are nothing to worry about as they are about the size of a grain of sand, and have been returning for centuries. If you look up in the sky towards the east after dark for 10 mins or so, you should see at least one. By the 12th of August, when the shower reaches its height, you should see loads. Just google Persied Shower and you will find loads of info.
  9. Great reply, lots of factors to consider. As they say, the thing about common sense is it ain't that common any more!
  10. I completely agree with Richdav. H&S gets to much bad press in the tabloids because of stupid decisions made by people with no idea and very little training in the subject. Result: stories about conkers and throwing sweets in pantos, etc while constantly stating the "health and safety culture" More of a litigation culture I would say. I can hardly turn the telly on without being bombarded by "had an accident at work, no win, no fee, blah, blah, blah" From my limited knowledge, I think that a harness is only used as a last resort if other measures are not sufficient (Eg; edge protection to prevent a fall the first place) Mainly because the shock loading on the body may also cause injury. I also think that HSE have changed their policy for reporting these things and like to know if you to have discussed the problem with the company before sending an inspector.
