  1. Decathlon do em pretty cheap at the bottom of eyre street opposite staples in various sizes
  2. The gleadless group has Air Scouts- the number above is for Mick, the GSL who runs the group as a whole- he may pass you on to a guy called Lionel who runs the Air Scouts. If you have trouble getting hold of him email me on [email protected] with your contact details and I'll get him to cal you. I run part of the group at Handsworth so have a lot of dealings with he gleadless group- I'm sure they would make your son welcome
  3. If Google did the change permanently, they'd save thousands of pounds worldwide in energy- http://www.blackle.com explains that as white background is a lot brighter than a black background and thus uses more energy. Check it out if you want to make a difference to your enegy usage!
  4. I work in the financial services and property seems to have dropped as low as it is going to. Recent forecasts predict holding steady, perhaps dropping another 1% or so before starting to rise slowly again next year- much slower than recent years. Might be worth looking around for houses that have been listed for quite a while and offering below the asking price to bring it nearer to your budget. However, given recent guidelines from the government, changes to tax and capital gains the financial markets are not at their most stable, banks are looking for a little more security. As mentioned above if you have a large deposit, steady income and provision to pay that income in the event of something happening to the main wage earner (life insurance and/or accident/sickness/unemployment cover) , now is not a bad time at all. Quick caveat: this does not constitute financial advice- advice can only be given after looking at your particular circumstances. Markets may fall as well as rise and no guarantees are given for any particular circumstance.
  5. Handsworth's fine if you don't mind a few gangs of kiddie chavs, but to be fair you won't find many places in the city without that now! I run the Scout group there and have had a few problems in the past, but certainly nothing in the last year or so. As for nothing to do there's about 12 different pubs, a snooker club, a bowling alley or of course if you want me to recruit you as a spare Scout Leader I'm sure I can find you a few things to do.... ;o)
  6. I'm going to have real problems if they've cut the Treeton/Handsworth link. I'm a scout leader in Handsworth living in Treeton and don't drive!! All the info seems to say that the bus will skip Treeton altogether or will go direct to Sheffield. And just to help, despite the fact it launches this month, Firsts callcentre don't actually have plans of the route yet.
  7. I know the one, but I tend to get my stuff local in Handsworth at Sugar and Spice, next to the Post Office. Loadsa old sweets and big tubs full of barley sugar twists... <<drool...>>
  8. Gemsoft has moved not closed- somewhere down towards Attercliffe I think he was saying. N2C on West St are very efficient and if it's a simple problem they might do it there and then. But they don't always keep everything in stock, so may have to send off for parts if it's serious. You can drop in for a free quote though.
  9. Ironically, it's more dangerous to walk round Handsworth top between 6 and 9, then late at night. Mainly because the problems are caused by youths of 12-15 in groups of 10+. It is getting to be a fairly serious problem. I run the Scout Group at Handsworth and now advise my members to turn up with their uniform in a bag, because it makes them a target. Even so three of my Young Leaders (14-18 year olds) had eggs thrown at them as they came out of the top of Church Lane, St Mary's. These youngsters know exactly what they are doing and know full well they will get no more than a telling off for it. Lock em up and throw away the key IMHO. Then brick up the doorway and throw away the bricklayer.
  10. Sceptics opinion: I think it's a lot like Horoscopes. Cards and stars cannot predict the future. However your mind can link whatever experiences you are currently thinking of (and lets face it, people have millions of things skimming through their heads) and Tarot and Horoscopes can make you concentrate on that thought, thus becoming self fulfilling. This is not necessarily a bad thing- something to aid your focus is a great kick to go do the thing you should be doing anyway but have put off or not judged important enough to do!
  11. Think it was the nose and chin mostly- she looked like a He-Man reject!! Gotta be some steroids being involved somewhere down the line there...
  12. I have japanese students stay over with me whilst they learn english. I now have to send 16 bottles a quarter over to Japan, which they send me the funds for. Now tell me they'd do that for Worcester sauce!!! Pah!
  13. Lol... Ask for Lindsay next time she has a Computing A Level... can't promise she won't swear though! I worked at Staples too- sounds like just after Craig left. I got a new Gen. Man starting same time I did and he made it pleasant to work there, with social nights and what have you. But Staples hires mostly students because they're more desperate for the money and can be asked to do more hours and as such doesn't train em much. A video from comedy central on H&S and a tour of the aisles and that's it. They never threatened me with the sack though- sounds like Craig got a nasty run.
  14. Living outside Sheffield means nothing- originally the plans would have connected up Rotherham and Sheffield City centres. There's currently a petition for the Waverly development project to get it to come down the Back of Handsworth, connect to the new area, then Catcliffe and up to Brinsworth, eventually being extended to Rotherham. This is still in the early stages though- just the petition is in place, though with some backing from development companies. The 'modern industrial estate' (IT services, pharmaceuticals and other 'clean' industries only allowed!) has been granted permission, but the houses, where they are still flattening the slag heap from the old pit have not yet been granted. You can get more info from http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-meetings/cabinet/22nd-september-2004/development-at-waverley although it says in this report the Supertram extension has been dropped they have reapplied with more backing from companies and it is being reconsidered.
  15. brings to mind the old urban legend: The Price of Stupidity What a world? (country NSW)… On Thursday, 24 January 2002, Derek Guille broadcast this story on his afternoon program on ABC radio. In March, 1999, a man living in Kandos (near Mudgee in NSW) received a bill for his as yet unused gas line stating that he owed $0.00. He ignored it and threw it away. In April he received another bill and threw that one away too. The following month the gas company sent him a very nasty note stating they were going to cancel his gas line if he didn’t send them $0.00 by return mail. He called them, talked to them, and they said it was a computer error and they would take care of it. The following month he decided that it was about time that he tried out the troublesome gas line figuring that if there was usage on the account it would put an end to this ridiculous predicament. However, when he went to use the gas, it had been cut off. He called the gas company who apologised for the computer error once again and said that they would take care of it. The next day he got a bill for $0.00 stating that payment was now overdue. Assuming that having spoken to them the previous day the latest bill was yet another mistake, so he ignored it, trusting that the company would be as good as their word and sort the problem out. The next month he got a bill for $0.00. This bill also stated that he had 10 days to pay his account or the company would have to take steps to recover the debt. Finally, giving in, he thought he would beat the company at their own game and mailed them a cheque for $0.00. The computer duly processed his account and returned a statement to the effect that he now owed the gas company nothing at all. A week later, the manager of the Mudgee branch of the Westpac Banking Corporation called our hapless friend and asked him what he was doing writing cheque for $0.00. After a lengthy explanation the bank manager replied that the $0.00 cheque had caused their cheque processing software to fail. The bank could therefore not process ANY cheques they had received from ANY of their customers that day because the cheque for $0.00 had caused the computer to crash. The following month the man received a letter from the gas company claiming that his cheque has bounced and that he now owed them $0.00 and unless he sent a cheque by return mail they would take immediate steps to recover the debt. At this point, the man decided to file a debt harassment claim against the gas company. It took him nearly 2 hours to convince the clerks at the local courthouse that he was not joking. They subsequently assisted him in the drafting of statements which were considered substantive evidence of the aggravation and difficulties he had been forced to endure during this debacle. The matter was heard in the Magistrate’s Court in Mudgee and the outcome was this: The gas company was ordered to: [1] Immediately rectify their computerised accounts system or show cause, within 10 days, why the matter should not be referred to a higher court for consideration under Company Law. [2] Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by the man. [3] Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by all the Westpac clients whose cheques had been bounced on the day our friend’s had been. [4] Pay the claimant’s court costs; and [5] Pay the claimant a total of $1500 per month for the 5 month period March to July inclusive as compensation for the aggravation they had caused their client to suffer. And all this over $0.00.
