  1. Hey. Thanks for this. Can I ask where you found out about the 50% off? Have checked theor website, Facebook page and Twitter feed and can see no mention. The beer list looks good tho and also wonder wherther you can just go in for drinks?
  2. Sorry mate - unusually quiet Friday afternoon here... Counting the minutes down to leaving for the Shakespeare so managed to get on here for a change.
  3. Aye... But don't forget - #SheffieldIsSuper
  4. This? http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/morrisons-yorkshire-pudding-pizza-supermarket-a8190826.html
  5. I'm guessing this is an attempt to capitalise on / fill a gap in the schedule created by the loss of SIBA BeerX. only on a much smaller scale. And with (potentially) better beer. Although those breweries so far announced are fairly predictable, and easily obtainable elsewhere in Sheffield (with the possible exception of Mad Hatter) so, like Dave, I am not massively convinced on the latter point. Though I will give it a go, as it's not massively expensive (compared to Dark City in Leeds which Dave mentioned) and always worth supporting something new. If it's cr@p I simply won't do it again. Sadly, the attitude of many regarding things like this is endemic of Sheffield and the reason there rarely is anything inventive here. For the record Dark City in Leeds sold out and was a repeat event of an earlier festival (Hop City) 6 months previously, which also sold out. So it seems people in other places will get behind things that people try. Strange that, innit?
  6. Maybe you should read my previous post where, following my visit, I claimed it was now more of a tea room than the cocktail bar it always tried to be. It's not hard to find Yes it's another place I don't like. I am free to express that opinion. Unlike many on here who write reviews of places and dare not say a bad word about them for fear of being ostracised. It's the same with beer. Lost count of the people that I have been drinking with who have not liked something and yet given it a much higher than average review because they don't want to upset anyone. Personally I have no problem with upsetting people and would rather say what I think. Simply because only then do you get balance.
  7. Really? That will be in time for the Cross Scythes beers festival at the end of the month then. Might be worth going out of my way to get there. Now if only Sheffield people did the same thing and experienced stuff out of their own town, they might find out what good beer really is.
  8. You have a point, but Bramall Lane is quite central to Sheffield (15 mins walk from the Peace Gardens if done 'briskly') whereas Hillsbrough is...not. Curious to know why the Albion and Cremorne aren't on the list. Not that I rate either, but they do actually sell beer. Of sorts. And some think it's 'good'. Apparently.
  9. I have to admit to being slightly dischuffed about this. I used to have great fun laughing at colleagues who travelled up from 'That London' and asked where the nearest Pret was. There was something slightly rewarding about Sheffield being backward enough to avoid it for so long. And even more rewarding to return the favour in London and ask where the nearest Greggs was... But progress is progress I guess. Sheffield is getting more hipster by the week and guess they need somewhere to eat. We will be getting an Wasabi next (not the Sabi place on London Rd, the café/takeaway chain) And a Hotel Chocolat café. Maybe.
  10. Attention to detail like the chandelier made out of a tea service you mean? I suppose it's nice enough if you like to drink in Bettys. Not really suited to quaffing a nice pint of beer. Which is odd considering who owns it. But each to their own. As for the staff - I think we upset the greeter by simply taking a seat rather than waiting to be seated. She didn't say anything as 4 of us were sat in a 4-seater booth. But I noticed she moved on a couple who had similarly sat in a 4-seater a bit later. ---------- Post added 18-09-2017 at 15:52 ---------- I have always said I like True North pubs - especially the Broadfield and the York. For my money they could do with investing a little more in brewing ability than ripping out a classic pub and turning into a tea room. I used to like the Old House tho will admit it had got a little tired. I do think the refurb is rather out of character tho. I'm not entirely sure what market they are going for here. BTW, I did say I DIDN'T think you were that thick. And see the winky face after? Indicating a joke? But hey, if you're not going to bother with the details then maybe you are.
  11. I come this way to work every day. Friday evening was a joke. I can only hope they have the lights sorted out tonight. Things seemed ok this morning, but that was before 7am when traffic was still fairly light. From the perspective of moving traffic through I think the project has failed. It certainly is no better than it was. But then you have to appreciate that around this area is supposed to grow a large industrial park, which will need access/ And in that respect it was probably necessary. Although when the big waggons start to arrive to construct said park, I will probably find another way to and from work...
  12. If I had done that then I wouldn't have gone in, now, would I? Come on...work it out... You aren't that thick, surely? Be interesting to see what you think of it.
  13. Slightly off-topic but I noticed that the Rockin Chair was shut on Saturday and is being renamed Café Totem. Still doing the music downstairs but upstairs more of a café bar with a promise of lagers and ales 'back on the bar' rather than just the old ropey bottle range. Could be worth a visit. Haven't done a 'rock bar' crawl for some time!
  14. Went in on Saturday. I will retract my comment that it is now a cocktail bar. More of a tea room. Keg beers that were on were OK. The cask that a mate got was decidedly ropey. Being BlackJack we put that down to condition rather than the beer itself. Bit of a poor show for a brewery tap.
  15. Star system isn't about quality of the hotel though. it's about facilities. I think the Easy gets a 4* rating as it has a gym in addition to the staples like bar and restaurant. I have actually stayed in a very nice 2* hotel in York before, that simply got that rating as it only had a breakfast room, not a restaurant and bar.
  16. I always find quotes like that to be quite amazing, especially when not backed up with facts. Would love to know your source on this please. Given that there are lots of studies out there on this and the vast majority put retention way below 50% (which would be necessary for a 'majority', and some as low as 9% of incoming students to an area (rather than ones choosing to study locally) https://tinyurl.com/y8n6loq3 I did, however, witness the chaos first hand this weekend by parking up in the dev Cat and having a few beers whilst I watched the madness outside unfold...
  17. Going to be honest, the change from the 265 to the 2 is one of the best things that's happened in recent years for me. The old pre-7am bus into Barnsley centre used to JUST miss the train connection into Sheffield resulting in a half-hour wait. Not it runs 6 mins earlier it connects great. Plus, if I'm lazy and decide to catch the bus in, it runs earlier back into Sheffield too, and all the way up Arundel Gate now so goes past where I work, meaning I get into work earlier whichever way I come. I am also looking forward to being able to get a bus (almost) door to door from home to the Beer Engine or Dev Cat now it loops around the market. And a good friend of mine who often leaves Beer Central with a rusksack full is delighted that he won't have to lug it to the bus station any more. Compare that to the last big chance when Stagecoach dropped all the non-peak services to TM Travel, making a weekly/monthly pass no longer viable for many people and doubling what they had to pay to travel. However, I do understand these changes won't suit everyone - especially those on or over the Derbyshire border. But as Andy says - use them or lose them. For those complaining that their last bus back is before 11, spare a thought for those of us who have to cope with before 10!
  18. Maybe the point is to get it confused with the Dev Cat. It certainly looks rather similar now! The bar area at least.
  19. I've seen the inside. They have done a Dev Cat job on it. IE turned it into a cocktail bar. Well... MORE of a cocktail bar. It already pretty much was one.
  20. Aye - it is. Would you like me to go through the list of new bars that have been touted around on this Forum over the last few years, and see how many are still open? DaDa, Anchorage, Hop, West St Ale House, Stone and Taps... they are only the ones that immediately spring to mind. Plus, did you read what Dave said on the Shakespeare thread? The best of the Sheffield brewers sell more beer in Nottingham than they do in Sheffield. Having been to NCBW last weekend I can tell you it pee'd all over Sheffield Beer Week - something that may now struggle to continue after the loss of SiBA. As a Sheffielder are you proud of this? Really? I AM a Sheffielder and I am not. I moved back to this area with high expectations a few years ago, and they have all been dashed. Pretty much everyone else I know from outside the city thinks the same way. Just happens that those that inhabit it seem to wear blinkers. You think that one new bar can make up for this? I've said before that one bar does not a city make. Sheffield may have half a dozen good bars - at a push. Unfortunately even towns like Huddersfield have more than that. As for a new micropub opening in Woodseats, Pete - woooo! Exciting. Barnsley has had 3 new micropubs open in the last 2 months. Well donr for trying to catch up! Fortunately it's SunFest next weekend. At least that gives me an excuse to come into Sheffield.
  21. Problem is with budget hotel rooms in London is they can be awful. I once spent two nights in the Radisson Vanderbilt in Kensington at a good rate, but was allocated a room which could only be described as a broom cupboard. Bed up against the wall and partially across the entrance to the toilet, which had no door on it as a result. So you're best sticking to a big budget chain. Personally I think some of the Travelodge hotels can be OK - especially the refurbished rooms. BUT I'd sound a word of caution at this time of year - most don't have aircon so you need to have a window open at night - and most are in quite noisy places. Premier Inn is usually a better bet in summer.
  22. Was planning on visiting this weekend, but if this place is not completely off the ground yet then I'm not so sure. Last time around Kelham was disappointing. Shakespeares was OK, as was Welly, but not of a decent range in the rest and, dare I say, the quality of the beer in the Fat Cat was downright ropey!
  23. Sadly, Dave that's very true. I was massively impressed with some of the Nottingham bars offerings during NCBW. The Barrell Drop was far better than expected with a whole raft of keg lines to compliment the cask, Junkyard did great food and had a great range of beer, including several Lost Industry beers that I've never seen before - mostly the sour / fruity kegs that this kind of weather calls for. And as for Keans Head - a pub not that much different to any other, but with the added installation of ten craft kegs on the wall - all of which were taken up with Siren for NCBW - including the amazing Odyssey 008 and Bourbon Milkshake. I'd definitely go for another trip down there sometime. Unfortunately many on this forum do fail to appreciate / admit just how far Sheffield is behind other cities on the craft beer front. Really wish I knew why. It's not as though Nottingham is any more accessible, for example. I love the effort that places like Shakespeares, the Rutland and the Beer Engine put into offering something different. But there just aren't enough of this type of place in Sheffield to encourage me to drink there too often.
  24. Thanks for the tip Pete. Might give it a couple of weeks before I go check it out. Depending on what the weather is doing this weekend.
