  1. Ignore me abouit the banks. I somehow had it in my head that Pinstone treet went around the corner past the Town Hall, but of course that is Surrey Street, where the closed banks are. The only Panasonic shop (maybe you mean?) is now a Co-op Bank and the one on the other corder is a Barclays. So yes, I presume it could only be Maplins or the old supermarket.
  2. Eccy Rd can be OK. Start at the mictopub at the top and work your way back via Lescar and possibly Porter Brook - you won't find an astonishing range of beer but what you do find is generally pretty well kept. The Ale Club is definitely worth a visit and then just keep walking down to the Beer Engine via Graze / Cowshed or simply hop on a bus back there before trundling back into town. It's something I tend to do when the centre gets mental just before Christmas especially. I have made the argument about the decline of Sheffield Centre good beer bars in the past. The old crawl from Bath to Old Dev Cat, Brewdog, Old House, Henry's Brewhouse and on to DaDa etc. will, I fear, never be repeated. But things seem to go in cycles and the redevelopment of the centre could throw up some new places. Like the one on Pinstone Street. If it appears... I kinda agree with both viewpoints here, though I would dispute the Dev Cat having the best beer selection in the centre. Surely that is ther Rutland. The problem with the Dev Cat is it now attracts the cocktail crowd and at busy times you are queuing for beer for ages whilst they whip up something fancy and expensive for some giggling girls who, of course, all have to order seperately because they don't understand the concept of 'rounds'. In fact I once went in and had the bartender so preoccupied by doing this tht he obviously thought us ordering pints of real ale was an intrusion. He put a glass under each pump and pumped both at the same time with both hands at full force which meant my beer came out looking like diswahing water and killed it stone dead. Naturally I complined which he was not too chuffed about as he gpot a reprimand and I got an apology with a £10 food voucher as well. Now I only go in when it's quiet and they have picked up their game. But, for a brewery tap, I think it's fair to say they don't focus so much on beer anymore. The Devonshire went the same way when it changed from the Old House and endced up like Betty's Tea Room, but fortunately they took the criticism and have reverted it back somewhat. But this is going way off-topic!
  3. It's pretty much classic Brexit-era humour isn't it? A throwback to the 70's. Rather like Citizen Khan. Love Thy Neighbour will be getting a remake next....
  4. Yes. Thats what I thought. Maplins surely wouldnt be big enough, but i had forgot about the supermarket as WH Smith had moved in, but of course now out again. Would be nice if it was of the old banks - across from Town Hall or the one further up. They are just nicer buidings than a square box with windows at one end.
  5. That was kinda my point And also wondered where they were gonna put it on Pinstone Street? Especially if they DO have a distillery in it.
  6. Thought you were good at reading articles? This isn;t even a particularly long one...
  7. Is this the place you are talking about in Hillsborough? https://www.exposedmagazine.co.uk/food-drink/bars/brass-monkey-micropub-opens-in-hillsborough/ If so, looks OK. Interesting to note that they are opening bars in Kelham and the City Centre as well, with the latter claimed to be the largest of it's type in town. So that makes me wonder where it could go. Thought most of Pinstone Street was being redeveloped?
  8. I agree, it always feels a long way from Beer Engone to anywhere else - hence splitting the journey with Sentinel, but you're right - it's not. That said I only usually go there when coming back from Eccy Rd, or heading up that way.
  9. That is not exactly true, though, becasuse they have refused to rule out job losses in future. Technology has advanced to where it makes it almost impossible to travel anywhere without a ticket when implemented correctly. Then train companies will realise it is cheaper to scrap the guards and put a few inspectors on instead to catch the fare dodgers that are out there. And by this time you already have drivers operating the doors so it's not an issue is it...? You don't need to be a genius to see where this is going, so I have some sympathy with the unions. That said, it is the same story in many walks of life where unskilled or semi-skilled workers will be replaced by automation. We have seen in retail where people will happily spend less on a product online than go into a store and talk to a salesperson, causing shops to close and associated job losses. With the recent rail price increases I suspect the same people would rather see them fall, even if it costs a few thousand jobs. Being based in Barnsley I am slightly biased on this because Northern are the only rail company that serve our station. This means, if it wasn't for buses, I would have been confined to Saturdays drinking in Barnsley for the last 5 months. And, lets face it, no-one wants that! So I have already written to my MP asking him to challenge Northern on this matter because, quite frankly, they don;t seem to be interested in bringing the dispute to an end. Add in the timetable chaos the same company caused last year, and the fact the promised new rolling stock has not yet appeared, I think it's fair to say they have failed to deliver on theor contract and I think it should be taken off them, in the same way as Midland Mainline was.
  10. Slightly disagree. It used to make the walk from the Rutland to Beer Engine (or vice-versa) slightly more interesting. But the beer was never outstanding - especially the 'stout'. I too went out on Friday and seemed to catch a wave of people doing a similar bar crawl as everywhere I went in was busy on arrival, but then moved on. And I had showered, I promise! But I haven't made it back to Sentinel yet.
  11. We can all Google studies and ask people what they think of them, though, can't we? Here are a couple for you to look at: https://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/item/27857-36-year-study-children-s-preference-for-gender-specific-toys-is-innate https://www.telegraph.co.uk/family/parenting/gender-neutral-parenting-has-gone-far/ I’m not saying I agree strongly with one set of study or the other. From my experience I would say that, for the majority of all of us on this Forum, what our parents and our peers decided was suitable for us to play with as a child has had no discernible effect on our outcomes. I was born to very old fashioned parents who were both in the 40’s when I was born, and who lived through the war. As such I was brought up with very clear ideas of what it meant to be a boy and a man. It was almost a blessing that my mother died before she found out I was gay, because she made it quite clear that she thought it was ‘disgusting’. However, all that served to do was make me more determined to pursue the life I chose for myself rather than conform to her ideals. That said, even judging by the comments on here, there are undoubtedly some who are influenced by such things and, as a society, we have a duty to protect our most vulnerable. So if doing something as simple as removing signs pointing children to what we expect them to play with helps some people, whilst causing absolutely no issues for the rest of the population, then isn’t it just common sense to do it?
  12. I think they have done a good job. It's a really nice place. However, they need to do better with the beer range. This is not me being a beer snob. It's just that when I went in they had almost EXACTLY the same range of beer available at the Wetherspoons opposite for a quid a pint less. Who also have a better gin range. So whilst it will inevitably be busy with people checking it out when new, I think it may be in danger if it doesn't differentiate itself going forward. And would hate to see it close as it does give a reason to go to Chapeltown...
  13. I noticed this article about the closure of yet another pub in Sheffield. This follows on from the closure of Veeno down the road a few months ago - https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/customers-shock-as-ecclesall-road-prosecco-bar-closes-less-than-one-year-after-opening-1-9354274 Would be very interested to know if some of the people making silly arguments about missing out on experiences went in these places for the 'atmosphere' and if not, why not? According to the article some customers are 'shocked' about this closure. Really? I'm just disappointed that when the students return to Ecclesall Road they will be greeted with yet more empty units again. Not a great advert for Sheffield nightlife. But then it seems that if the pub/bar isn't quirky or traditional then it's no good for Sheffield... On a more pleasant note I passed workmen doing up the place next to Stone the Crows on Barkers Pool today. It's going to be Barker's Bar apparently. When it opens I'll likely go in once to see what kind of beer they have, then maybe never again. Same thing I'll do if and when the Three Tuns reopens, unless it has a massively better drinks offer. I pay my money and take my choice - like everyone else is free to.
  14. I read an article the other day that said it seemed very wasteful and bad for the environment to go to the supermarket and buy milk in disposable, plastic bottles. Wouldn't it be very future thinking if it could be delivered in glass bottles whih were subequently collected and recylcled by non-polluting electric vehicles. Makes you think, doesn't it?
  15. I do hope that PeteM01 et al are reading this and realising that maybe, just maybe, they might be wrong about pubs. The fact that a place might be traditional and quirky isn't enough to save it if it offers nothing that people who spend good money on good beer want to drink. What Cyclone said is absolutely true - people pay their money and take their choice with regards their pub visits. And clearly not enough people chose to pay their money in this place. Sad, but true. Maybe someone else will take it on with a little more vision? Or maybe it's just doomed to be home to the 'Ow much' crowd who sadly won't pay enough to keep it open.
  16. Personally I am a great advocate of road safety. Have always been taught that I should give a parked car a minimum of 1 mtr in case someone suddently opens a door without looking, and to give a cyclist the same grace in case they need to swerve to avoid a pothole or similar. However, it would be nice if cyclists gave me the same grace occasionally. Today on the way into work, a cyclist I passed on Penistone Road (allowing plenty of room) then came passing in between myself and another car whilst we were sat in a queue at traffic lights, clipping my wing mirror and almost taking himself out in the process. Fortunately no real damage was caused, but clearly he had not left me, or the car next door, the same 1 mtr space (there was barely that between us). I think bad driving / riding happens on both sides.
  17. University of Sheffield is a Russell Group University. An MBA from them would carry as much weight as from any other Russell Group. IE - it's no Oxford or Cambridge, but better respected than many smaller universities.
  18. Given other areas of the country have set up a few 'fan zones' to watch the football, you would have thought Sheffield Council might have been on this with a screen in the Peace gardens or somewhere, given it's a Saturday afternoon match. Charge plot space for a few food stalls and beer bars to offset the cost and everyone is happy. Can only hope that this will happen if we actually get to the final.
  19. TBH if I can't drink for whatever reason I often prefer a couple of bottles of tonic in a pint glass with some ice. Tastes better and more bitter than most non-alcoholic or low alcohol beers out there so helps keep a hophead happy. But it's also just as expensive.
  20. West Street Live are doing 'I Can't Believe It's Not Trxxlines!'. It is advertised on the PerfectParachutePicture page who are playing there on Friday 20th at 10:30PM. Dunno if you have seen those guys - just a bassist and drummer/singer? But they could hardly be described as 'light'. I've never heard two people make so much noise before. They are awesome.
  21. That wasn't your argument though. You said if it sells it must be good. Whereas I am with Dave - some people will sup anything if it is a) cheap; b) rammed down their throat with enough marketing or; c) nothing else isavailable. I will be the same this weekend. But know full well that nothing I drink will be 'good'.
  22. Yeah I know. But after splurging fifty quid on beer weekend before last, and a forty quid last weekend, which involved sampling the Northern Powerhouse collabs at the Hallamshire, I needs a cheap weekend until payday! Plus, I'm from Yorkshire, so every molecule in my body will rebel at wasting discount vouchers. You know how it is... Besides, 90% of all bars showing the World Cup will have nothing better than lager, so I can cope with a cheap Spoons beer instead. If I can find one showing it... World Cup only comes around ever 4 years. I can drink good beer on other weekends Hopefully they won't be too busy either if the rumours of them not being able to dispense John Smiths and Carling are anything to go by! I was hoping to get to Grerystones after SunFest next weekend to watch the quarter finals. But according to pete they don't show the footy on a Saturday there? So that will involve yet another plan if the Abbeydale don't put any screens up.
  23. Total tosh. The top selling beer brands in the UK are: Stella, Carling, Budweiser, Carlsberg, Fosters, Coors Light and San Miguel. So by your definition these are good beers?
  24. Bit of advice required here. On Saturday it is our tri-monthly (is that the right word for every 3 months?) Wetherspoons crawl in which we get rid of all our vouchers for that period. We normally try to cover all those with beer gardens from Barnsley into Sheffield (Joseph Bramah, Waggon at Chapeltown, Rawson Spring, Francis Newton etc) but of course there are gonna be some tasty World Cup games that day. Does anyone know whether the Rawson is showing World Cup games (that aren't England)? And, when we eventually get fed up of Spoons beer (normally by the time we get to Ecclesall Road) where would be best to catch the 7PM game? I know Champs would be favourite here but it has limited beer choice. I can see a comment that Sentinel are showing them? But not sure that would include Saturday? I know other places are not including Saturdays in their screenings.
