  7. Emma Here here As a structural engineer, I'd add that if you require alterations to the existing building (widening an opening etc) you might require structural calculations & details along side the designer. Simple flowchart: - Client (what I want) - Designer / Architect / Arch Technologist (what you need) - Structural Engineer (What to build and how) - Builder (Builds) In my opinion the ultimate key to a successful build is a good builder!
  8. Evan Trades Hub! If you haven't heard now, you'll be hearing about this network of businesses coming together to facilitate anything from tiling a bathroom to solar panels on an industrial complex. http://www.thetradeshub.com/ Worth a look & yes 'how long is a piece of string' from mkdr21 might appear flippent, but you've asked alot which varied from area to area in south yorkshire. 9. First off - good luck Mafya. I hope the builder returns your calls I'd second Craig's post for Mike 2008 Dean
  10. If there are any structural alterations, my company can do the design work required. I can recommend a few Architects / Architectural technologists who can help you achieve the best potential for your home. info@sdasignature.com
  11. Structural engineer here I lived on pickmere road, Crookes as a student for three years in the loft so I know how existing loft floors can on one hand fail theoretically but be functional as long as you don't put much weight up there. For peace of mind you can organise a survey to establish the adequacy of the floor. Simple check - if the floor depth is 100mm or less - budget for some building work. Happy completion & move BK Dean 0114 2499991 or info@sdasignature.com
  12. I'm budgeting around £3500 to re-model my bathroom (all-in). A builder I know did a bathroom for £600 (just labour) but replacing like-for-like locations of WC and bath.
  13. Sarah - I must agree with Craig here. The simpliest way to look at the overall role of the professionals you employ for alterations to a building in my opinion are: 1) Architect - agrees overall design with, submits for planning if required, produces construction drawings. 2) Structural engineer - designs for any alterations in need of calculations and makes an assessment of structral stability of the building. 3) Builder - builds 4) Building control - checks designs / spec. of Architect and Engineer. Building inspector checks that works have been carried out according to those specifications Hence, the structural engineer should be stating whether a post / column is required for the lateral stability of the building. As a structural engineer if you need any further advice please contact 0114 249 9991 or email dem@sdasignature.com Dean Miller Signature Design Associates
