  1. Thanks ricgem2002 Yes, brick pointing would be needed (for a bricklayer). I am unsure whether the lead flashing would be replaced (I guess it's for a roofer). Thanks
  2. Hi I have moved into a detached house in Walkerly S6. I have noticed brick work needs to be repaired between ground floor and 1st floor in front of my house. Please see photos: http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o711/wind2000/IMG_20150824_134946_zpsghb3pewn.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o711/wind2000/IMG_20150824_134925_zpszfgmj1nn.jpg Who should I get, roofer or bricklayer? Do you recommend any people doing this sort of job. Thank you.
  3. Hi I am living in a mid terraced house in Hillsborough. Recently I noticed a sign of water running down front of my house after raining. I took a picture: http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o711/wind2000/IMG_20141122_132740_zps7e8c17c9.jpg However, I currently have no damp or mould growing problems from the inside of wall. Should I be worried about? Any recommendations of someone to come and quote for us? Thanks.
  4. I would recommend JF plumbing for boiler problems. Jonathan came to my house on the same day and fixed my boiler problem. Highly recommended and I'll be him again in the future
  5. I thought I could pay for someone #3-40 to come to my house to fix it (as the TV heavy) - or I could bring it to the person if required. This is because I don't have a suitable space to put a freeview box. ---------- Post added 17-09-2013 at 14:56 ---------- Any TV repair man in Hillsborough Area?
  6. Thank you for your reply. Is there any places in Sheffield doing this kind of repair cheaply, if the cost is the same as buying a freeview box and cable? Thanks
  7. Hi Just wondering if anyone can help: I have a Samgsung TV (50" PLASMA TV PS50B430P2W). It is about 3 years old and is wall mounted. It is out of warranty. I have been watching TV with an outdoor aerial - no SKY or other TV boxes. Recently aerial connector on the back of the TV has snapped, and I can't get TV signal. The connector itself (the metal bit attached to the back of the TV) was slightly broken and about to come out from the back of the TV. Aerial cable is fine, and also TV itself is fine as I can play DVDs through a blu-ray player. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. I rang a TV repair shop and I was said that it would be #50 for an engineer to just come out and see the problem! Any ideas would be appreciated.
  8. Hi I have a gas stove (it looks like a log burner). I wanted to open bricked-up chimney and install the stove. So some plastering work will be involved apart from gas stove installation. I am quite frustrated in finding a gas fireplace fitter, after making more than 10 calls. I have contacted few fireplace shops and other people recommended by forum members. All fireplace shops I rang said they only install a stove they sell. As soon as I said I already had a gas stove, they were not interested in. Would you recommend anyone doing this kind of job?
  9. Thank you so much for your reply. I have about a month before I move in. Re. windows, I haven't arranged window companies to come and give me a quote. But i just rang a company today to get a rough idea of how much it will cost in total. It would be just usual upvc double glazed windows. Does £400-450 per window sound about right?
  10. I'll have keys for a house this Friday on the completion of sale (a typical small/medium sized mid terraced house in S6). I would need to do a lot of things within a timescale of a month. I just wanted to hear from people who had similar experience of buying and decorating a house. 1. I bought a cast iron gas stove from ebay for my living room. I don't want to have an expensive/decorative fireplace. The chimney has been bricked up. Who is the right person to do the job (gassafe, builder or wood burning stove installer)? Do I need to obtain a certificate as for wood burning stove? 2. 4 double glazing windows need to be installed, including the one in the living room. I am unsure whether window or fireplace installation should be the first. Should I just call a window company to get a quote and ask them? 3. In two rooms upstairs, there is an old heater, with an exhaust chimney through wall. As a pipe is connected to it, I guess its gas heater. Outside of the house, it looks like this (I just googled): http://www.colourbox.com/image/exhaust-chimney-of-an-old-gas-heater-in-a-house-image-1642962?ver=a&utm_expid=22365066-12.LQUruejPQVuO46hzBZUNtA.1&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F Is this something that a Gassafe person can remove? In the kitchen, an old combi boiler would need a good service (or repair - I can't make it work, although the seller said it's working). When I ring a Gassafe person, can I tell this as well? 4. I have single panel central heating radiators. I am thinking about replacing them with 2-3 column radiators. Is this a good idea? Or should I go for double panel radiators such as Stelrad Elite Radiators K2 Double Convector (Is this the right one?)? Could the old combi boiler be affected by this change, so that I need a new combi boiler? 5. I would like to get a joiner to replace a dated kitchen worktop with a solid oak worktop, to hang some internal doors, and to install handrail/guardrail to attic room. 6. After all the work above, I would need to install laminate flooring for all rooms (3 bedrooms and 2 reception rooms). I am hopeless at DIY. But I am thinking of laying laminate flooring and painting the wall by myself, as I am keen on saving. I am unsure whether installing laminate flooring on stairs and landing is a good idea. I think it is important to find the right people at the right time, to save time and money. Any thought or advice would be appreciated.
  11. I am unsure whether I would need to buy freehold. I wouldn't have any problems with it being leasehold, as there's about 690 years left. What would it be my interest to buy it? (I heard it costs ground rent * 30, plus fees for solicitors). Is there any good reason to buy it?
  12. Thank you so much Chip and Mafya for responding to my question. Fortunately, I was advised by my solicitor that the lease is for 800 years but mortgage lenders often put the lowest leasehold term they would accept, if they do not know it. I was panicking yesterday and searched a lot of websites to understand this situation. But now panic over!
  13. I am at the end of the process of buying a terraced house in S6. But I just noticed that the remaining term of lease was 70 years for the house. What should I do? Should I walk away? I heard that it would be difficult for someone to get a mortgage for less than 6-80 years to the end of leasehold. I have a mortgage offer (so it would not be a problem for me), but would it be a problem for a person who wants to buy the house from me in the future (so that I will be in trouble in selling the house)? Does anyone have this experience? Any advise would be appreciated.
