  1. So you have not contributed to the thread :loopy:

On the contrary, I think I have contributed in a most positive manner. I have suggested a solution (take a book) and my opinion that the world is full of issues to get upset about, but whether or not you are allowed to use your Kindle on the side of a public swimming bath is not one of them.

So, to surmise, my contribution is to relax, get over, move on with your life, and take a book to Zest should you wish to read something. It seems a most simple, some would say elegant, solution.

But now, I have a life. Adieu and good luck with your crusade.

  2. My child attends swimming lessons at Zest. When I saw the signs banning mobile phones etc. at poolside, do you know what I did? I took a book. Problem solved.

Did I feel I was being subjugated by the nanny state? No. Did I feel my civil liberties were being infringed? No. Rather I saw it as a sensible precaution taken by the pool, and an opportunity for me to get re-acquainted with a much loved book.

There isn't a problem. The reason this whole thing has dragged on for 10 (ten!) pages here is because of outraged keyboard warriors who take any possible opportunity to vent their spleen at the world. Get over it. Move on.

  3. Post-Halloween ghost hunting fun at the Unicorn pub, Worksop on November 1st, 8pm until midnight (of course!).

The events includes 30 minute ghost walk around Worksop, ESP test for all guests, tarot readings (not everyone guaranteed to get a reading), spirit communication with glass moving, actual seance in the dark, and red-light mediumship!

All this for just £20. Contact the venue for more details:

The Unicorn, Bridge Street, Worksop S80 1DA

    Tel: 01909 537011

  4. Is it just my TomTom, or has there been very bad coverage in the Yorkshire area recently. I've had great trouble getting a decent signal while driving around Sheffield all the way up to Bradford, but if I head south and get into Nottinghamshire the signal sorts itself out and there's no problem!

    Is it just me?

  5. Not wanting to take this thread off topic, but just thought it might be worth mentioning that for fans of horror and general spookiness my company are running a ghost hunt and seance (plus 3 course meal of course!) at the seriously spooky and haunted Lion Hotel in Worksop on Friday 21st August. The idea for this was inspired by one of my favourite haunted house films, "The House on Haunted Hill" - the B&W original with Vincent Price, although the remake was okay-ish.

    Details at http://www.seancenights.co.uk

  6. Well I've got to say that I hate magpies. There are hundreds of the things where I live and if any other bird pops its head out of the bushes it is swooped upon by them and killed. The only birds that can stand up to them are the crows, everything else is just a quick snack. We don't have a dawn chorus anymore, just that awful screeching noise they make as they attack another nest.

  7. Noticed a lot of police around Redmires Road and Lodge Moor shops on the tea time of the 30th June and also yesterday (the 1st). Several police cars and a police van, plus a small group of police patroling the area. I then went up to Wyming Brook to walk the dog later in the day and a police car and police van were heading up to the dams.

Probably nothing, but it just got me interested. Yes, I know, I'm just nosey.

  8. I got confused, I go down Hagg Hill on my way to work, but this must be a different one, the one off Midhurst Lane, when you turn off Foxhill Road.

The Hagg Hill I go down is a very steep hairpin bend. Not usually any problem, except if if have to stop on the way back up to let someone past because my handrake will not hold the car even when I really jam it on.

The Hagg Hill that's been talked about is the one that runs down from Crosspool to Rivelin Valley.

  9. Out of curiosity, how long has it taken you to learn? Did you practice on friends and family? I always imagine they'd be very difficult, seeing as they know what you're trying to achieve? Genuine interest here. I'm a big fan of Rowland, and very interested in this sort of thing from a psychological viewpoint, so your experiences learning the techniques would be interesting to hear.

Its very impressive when done well, and can be great entertainment. I'm really pleased you're doing it in the spirit (!!) it should be done in. Best. Pun. Ever. Do you do card forces and tricks like that as well? They're always entertaining because they're difficult to work out.

I learned tarot and palm reading many years ago when I was still a "shut eye". Later I developed an interest in magic which lead on to what's known as "mentalism" (Derren Brown for example is a mentalist not a magician, but "mentalist" has other meanings in the English language :)). A lot of mentalism is to do with "readings" so this was the natural place for me to gravitate towards, and it was there that I discovered learned more about the subtleties of cold readings, hot readings, barnum statements, etc. etc.

I worked for a while as a "regular" magician (so yes, I can do a few card tricks! :D) but have always found that people would far rather have their palm or tarot cards read than see a "trick". I often combine the two, which is quite novel.

And all of this led me to a quiet corner of mentalism called "seance theatre" - http://www.seancenights.co.uk :o

  10. When did you first buy your copy of Ian Rowland's guide to Cold Reading, seeing as that's all "psychic powers" really are?

I've had "Full Facts Book of Cold Reading" for about five years now, along of course with other stuff by people like Richard Webster and Kenton Knepper. In fact I'm lecturing to the British Society of Mystery Entertainers in London in November alongside Ian Rowland.

I'm an entertainer. Entertaining readings (sold as such) are just one part of my business, alongside mind-reading and seance theatre. The psychic parties I'm advertising here are a fun, entertaining night out - nothing more, nothing less, nothing heavy. Everyone is told that the tarot cards are just pieces of cardboard, and that everyone is in control of their own lives etc. I do NOT talk to dead relatives, locate missing people, help the FBI, or rob widows of their life savings. I do however make a mean balloon doggie.

Hope that clears up any misunderstandings.

  11. Another good idea is "psychic parties" which I run. Everyone has a tarot card reading (10 - 15 minutes) plus at the start of the evening I do an intro and a fun test to see who's the most psychic in your group! Min. of 8 people, max. of 12. £10 per person. PM me if interested.

Also be more than happy to talk about running my psychic party alongside other pamper parties, or working together? Again, PM me if interested.

  12. Ever fancied going on a real ghost hunt or taking part in a genuine seance? "Seance Nights" are a Sheffield based events company specialising in paranormal entertainment.

On the 21st August we are planning a very special "Seance & Supper" event at a most haunted hotel in Worksop. The evening includes a sumptious 2 course meal, followed by spirit communication and seances. Each attendee also receives a tarot card reading during the meal.

The evening is limited to just 20 places, so if you're interested please pop along to http://www.seancenights.co.uk where full details await you. You can also PM me here at Sheffield Forum for more details if you'd rather. :)
