  1. I met Nickscape this week and think he talks a lot of sense.
  2. Has anyone on here ever used Sheffield Help Yourself to find a payroll service provider? Do many people use it or do people go elsewhere to find a payroll provider? I am going through the process of listing and wondered what people have thought of the lists and if it is a useful tool for people who employ Personal Assistants and carers? Thank you
  3. Guys... I think you are winning me over. I cannot do the one on the 20th of February, but I will have to look into the ones after that. Thank you all for your input!
  4. I have posted an advert in November, to try and catch Self Assessment traffic. Nothing came of it. I have got a number of clients, that I have found by placing adverts locally, but I was very surprised by the advert in the magazine not attracting business (I had checked the advert out and it has a 2000 readership and another accountant also advertises in there). SEO might be the way forward.... Was trying to avoid this as I fear it is costly. Has anyone got any ideas of prices for this service?
  5. I have heard that this is a good way of meeting people but what is at the back of my mind is that I would think that people there are already established and have their own accountants. Maybe it is an element of shyness on my part, creeping in here. I have approached the local enterprise agencies re their networking days and asked for details about the companies they have attending, and they have been pretty useless in providing this information. They charge to go to the events and I did not want to pay out and find myself surrounded by businesses who were not interested in speaking to me. I could look at the payment as "advertising" - ie - you pay and maybe people will try your services or maybe they won't. It is interesting what you say though. Which ones have you been to?
  6. Like I said, Kid A, "in general terms". I think Steve had summed it up nicely, and did not want to add to it. You have provided a lot of really useful information!
  7. Yes, you should register as a sole trader and start submitting tax returns. It may be that you make a loss and can claim tax back previously paid...
  8. Hi Last year I built two websites. I am a self employed accountant and also a self employed yoga teacher. I have managed to get my hit rate for my yoga teaching site up (http://www.life-yoga.co.uk) and am getting lots of enquiries about my classes. The yoga website is now on the first page of Google, if you search for yoga teachers in Sheffield (just checked and I am at the bottom of page 1). I am having trouble trying to get visibility for my accountancy site http://www.life-accountancy.co.uk, despite using the same methods for making it findable. I have attracted some accountancy clients but would like to take on a few more, and need to therefore tackle the issue of making my website easier to find. What I have done in the past, in order to get data on how to make my site more retrievable, I looked on the Google Keyword search tool to see what words people used to find an accountant in Sheffield and applied the terms to my site. I also used tools in the "background" of the site to apply key search terms. However, in spite of all of this, if I do a search for "accountants in Sheffield" or "bookkeepers in Sheffield" or whatever, my site is not on the first few pages. I have been on here before to ask people to review my site and have taken on board all that has been said, to make it a better read and informative. I guess, maybe it is time to take another look at it. Has anyone got any ideas on how to make it more "findable"?? Thank you Zoe
  9. Yes, Steve is right. Losses are used against future profits (in general terms)
  10. I would go to a pop up restaurant but I would think they would work on recommendation only. Eg, someone starts one in their home and people go, love it and recommend on, til the buzz grows. Your idea sounds like an actual restaurant concept, ie, "the ever changing restaurant". I like that idea. There are some fab places that fell by the wayside that I'd like to see resurrected.
  11. Hello A few years ago I used the services of two men from Rotherham who sanded floors. They were father and son and I *think* the dad came from Kimberworth, and the son from Manchester. They did an amazing job. Great job, very thorough and pride. Unfortunately I cannot remember who they were and want to use them again. Does anyone know who they are? Can anyone recommend anyone?
  12. I agree with Thorpes. You claim what you travel, be it 0.2 or 2 miles! You cannot claim mileage from home to a permanent workplace (aka commuting), but certainly it's ok to claim business mileage (wholly, necessarily, etc)
  13. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. Nice to know I am making people happy with the work I do!
