  1. I would think the height of the column is more to do with it's harder to climb up and steal the lantern than anything else, on our estate they replaced the older 5m columns with 6m ones
  2. Brave man You wouldn't catch me going into columns, even though it's a fair few years since I've been on a building site I still remember those safety videos of people been hurt with electricity
  3. As far as I know there is no new wiring going in, only when they move the location of the new light As for leaving some on clocked control from what I was told this isn't going to happen eventually they will all be live
  4. They've just started this week on our estate, so being a nosey person decided to ask a few questions There is still a backlog in the lanterns being delivered, apparently the lanterns once delivered have to another part fitted for the new control system which is called talensa or telensa Sheffield has two types of control systems at the moment one is live, which has a cell on each lantern, the other is pilot which he called group switching in which a column or a pillar can switch an area of lights on, they have to switch the area on to complete a job so you get areas with lights on all the time. Once complete the new control system needs a live service, I would imagine that's why there are lights on all the time in certain areas The new led lights that are going off after a length of time is a fault and they need reporting, he gave me a card with the number 0114 237 4567 the e-mail is streetsahead@sheffield.gov.uk And there's a twitter account to follow for updates @SCCstreetsahead
  5. As was mentioned in another thread by Chap BLADE My understanding having spoken to Amey is that they are experiencing problems with the computerised system that manages the switching and they are working to resolve it. I can't see it being a finance issue as they get fined by SCC for lights not working correctly after 9 days
  6. This seems to be happening a lot, somebody on another thread said the same they come on for so long and then switch off I think Amey may have problem with the control system
  7. I'd report it straight away, they said they would dim not turn off
  8. I think someone might have told you a little porky They've been putting up older lanterns all over the place and quite a few columns that aren't painted black so they must be running out of equipment
  9. Another point just to add, with the new control system they have a control points, which are located at the the top of a few columns around the city these have to be live to work ( to switch on, off and dim the new LED lights) so you you could end up with another section on just to control the lights around the area I asked at one of those road shows as they are going to be starting around where I live soon
  10. They are on because the company who are jointing the new services can only work with the power on so any area that is having new street light or the odd column being replaced And with most of Sheffield's streets lights still switched from sub stations, all the lights have to be on
  11. The white lines have been done on what they class as a major route which aren't due to be resurfaced until 2017
  12. I'm just going on the website streets ahead these roads are classed ( by them) as major routes through an area The contract started towards the end of August 2012 the major works should be done by 2017 and the maintenance contract finishes in 2037 unless they extend it It's all on the streets ahead page on SCC website
  13. Birley Moor Road had been done plus quite a few more main routes in that area and the main routes in Stannington, Loxley, Wisewood and Walkley have been done I doubt the money will run out as it's a contract between Amey and the council/ government that's been signed. Amey have got 5 years to do all the major works and a further 20 years just doing the maintenance I must admit the work does seem to take a long time to finish an area, one of the main problems I've noticed it takes ages for the power to be put into the new columns
  14. The manufactures data isn't wrong but you are comparing a 35w sox lamp, to a lantern that will used on the major roads 35w sox lamp gives out about 4,400 lm, the 123w LED unit gives out 12,700 lm plus another thing that needs to be added to the equation is the start up current for a sox lamp or even a son lamp
  15. but won't the larger 52 LED units be for the main roads on the 10,12 metre columns on the side roads won't they install the smaller 10,14 or 18 LED units with the 6 metre columns SCC didn't upgrade all the columns on the main roads and you can find ones with the old 35w lamps but where they have upgraded you'll find the larger 100w and 150w units or 90w and 135w sodium lights
