  1. Last years show was a complete sell out and we're sure Mays show is going to be the same. Get your tickets quick from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/310084 to avoid disappointment. Best known as the frontman in The Bluetones, Mark Morriss released his debut solo album Memory Muscle on June 2, 2008. Getting his hands dirty with his own set of songs has been an inspiring experience for Morriss, who started trying them out acoustically at open mic nights in London way back in 2004. 'I'd just turn up with my guitar, play five or six songs, along with everyone else. I didn't want any special favours, and just enjoyed the experience of stripping things right back down' - Morriss.
  2. People of Sheffield. You really dont want to miss this show. After last years SOLD OUT belter of a show, Scott Matthews returns to The Greystones, Sheffield. on April 15th. If you havent checked him out do so here and be sure to grab your tickets A.S.A.P http://www.wegottickets.com/event/308217 Scott Matthews has garnered serious critical acclaim in his 10 year career to date and has taken this time to nurture his craft. He was always deliberate in his actions as witnessed in the time he originally spent as a guitarist before becoming the singer songwriter behind the groundbreaking debut album ā€˜Passing Strangerā€™. Scott keeps moving on and exploring to bring forth gems of songs that seem to gestate over time and then ā€œarriveā€ as if he was a conduit to some magical power. His vocal style has been much referenced in ethereal terms of "ghostly", "haunting", "eerie" and "hypnotic", so perhaps there is magic afoot. Among the reoccurring constants in his world are ā€œhomeā€ and what it means to everyone. The imposing six-foot four, Black Country, somewhat reclusive icon has become increasingly aware of why his roots remain firmly planted in the Midlands. As all great artists he seems to live somewhere between the real world and the blessed outer circle of day to day. During late 2012 Scott had a vision, which was to build a home studio. This, however, was only part of the plan. Upon completion of the studio, the final part of the vision was to set about recording a full-length album, without the help of an engineer or producer, which is something that Scott had never attempted before. The results of which can be heard on his forthcoming fourth album ā€˜Home part 1ā€™. The goal was to write a set of songs that he would be able to reflect on in years to come, by making a more personal album than previous releases. Drawing upon his exceptional song writing talents, for which Scott won the 2007 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, he has revealed more directly his personal experiences than previously. Instrumentally on ā€˜Home part 1ā€™, there is a familiarity to the soundscape with acoustic and electric guitars, cello, piano, flute, flugelhorn and drums dominating the field Whilst his own experiences are often the inspiration for his writing, he is also influenced by articles in local newspapers and the work of writers such as Alan Sillitoe and Robert Frost. He was profoundly moved by the iconic photography of Robert Wiles, which inspired the only piano-based song on the album, ā€˜86 Floors from Heavenā€™, while Magritteā€™s ā€˜The Son of Manā€™ influenced ā€˜The City and the Lieā€™. JMW Turnerā€™s depiction of the Black Country in his painting ā€˜Dudleyā€™ prompted him to consider how the great ā€˜painter of lightā€™ viewed the land on his doorstep ā€“ a land he has always lived and breathed ā€“ the concept of which appears in ā€˜Letā€™s get you Homeā€™. ā€™Home part 1ā€™ sees a continuation of stories and characters from some of Scottā€™s previous songs. ā€˜Monaā€™ is a prequel to ā€˜Up on the Hillā€™ from his ā€˜Elsewhereā€™ album. ā€˜The Outsiderā€™ has an ongoing theme, based around the character in ā€˜Passing Strangerā€™. Musically, Scott has channelled his inner Morricone in his first full-length instrumental track ā€˜The Clearingā€™. ā€œOver the past decade Iā€™ve gained a sound understanding of the recording process. Tips and techniques gained from working alongside gifted sound engineers have proved invaluable in the making of my first homemade album. The home studio environment has allowed me to experiment with alternate takes of a song, rework arrangements and make mistakes in familiar and relaxing surroundings. In challenging periods throughout the recording process, Iā€™ve been able to take time out to reflect over a pot of tea, often working into the early hours. The home studio has also enabled me to push musical boundaries, whilst acknowledging my limitations.ā€ Previously Scott was honoured by the guest appearance of Robert Plant on his album ā€˜Elsewhereā€™. ā€˜What the Night Deliversā€™ featured another guest performance from legendary double bassist Danny Thompson, whom Scott met whilst performing in Joe Boydā€™s stage production of ā€˜Way to Blue ā€“ The Songs of Nick Drakeā€™. He has performed on a number of international sell-out tours with respected artists such as Bert Jansch, Robert Plant, Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol and Rufus Wainwright. About his early start as a musician he says, ā€œI started playing guitar seriously from the age of 11. Jimi Hendrix was a massive influence in those early days. I remember my dad playing me ā€˜Are You Experiencedā€™, feeling completely captivated by this otherworldly sound. Throughout my teens, growing up in the West Midlands, I was trying to fit in at school with all the cool kids who were into The Stone Roses while I was bringing in mix tapes full of all these old blues guys! However, in the following years art and illustration dominated my life considerably and music took a back seat. ā€œI was closer to 20 before I started getting into acoustic guitar playing again. Neil Finn was a pivotal artist who helped me to bridge the gap between understanding how I could incorporate all the things Iā€™d learnt on the guitar and song writing. I then discovered the open tuning approach to guitar playing through John Martyn, Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Jimi Page. It feels like an ever-expanding palette of colours to work with and even to this day I find interesting ways to explore song writing purely through mucking about with tunings.ā€
  3. Lotte Mullen with Support from Jazz Morley Doors 7:30 http://www.wegottickets.com/event/301318 Lotte Mullan releases Band of Horses produced album ā€˜Loveā€™s Bonfireā€™ Recorded with Band of Horses in their Nashville studio, ā€˜Loveā€™s Bonfireā€™ is a gritty blend of alt-country and British Indie chronicling the "emotional seasons" of a relationship says Mullan. Mullan has a darker take on Country music than most Nashville inspired UK acts, with a storytelling style thatā€™s more Willie Nelson than Dolly Parton. ā€˜Loveā€™s Bonfireā€™ explores ā€œthe shadow side of loveā€ says Mullan and is a decidedly bolder step than 2012ā€™s Plain Jane, the debut that Mullan serviced to the press herself receiving a significant level of critical acclaim. She turned down a major label deal with Warners and instead set up her own label, Raindog Records, with funds from a deal with Elton Johnā€™s Rocket Pictures who optioned the rights to a blog she was writing about her misadventures in the music business. Mullan went to Nashville armed with songs and hoped recording with ā€œa hairy rock bandā€ band would help her ā€œpaint with bolder colours and avoid the usual singer-songwriter soundā€. She found her obsession with Country music being met with the American Rockers love of The Smiths which resulted in a sound she describes as ā€œa Trans-Atlantic mash-up". Mullanā€™s spooky layered vocals mixed with atmospheric distortion, pedal steel and picked guitar makes for a unique sound. There are hints of folk rock on the scathing ā€˜Jonathanā€™ about a man who ā€œholds his crotch like a crucifixā€ and ā€˜I'm still hereā€™ details the subtle agony of keeping romance alive in the twilight years of a relationship. The first single ā€˜I Hope It Breaks Your Heartā€™ immediately trended on soundcloud with over 80k plays and this track, alongside ā€˜Bad For Meā€™ has the biggest balls on the record exploring themes of romantic masochism, addiction, and revenge. While ā€˜Dear Elvisā€™ skips along on the surface it is, at itā€™s heart, one of the darkest songs on the record. Itā€™s sung from the perspective of a child in the 1950ā€™s whose Dad is a bully so he writes to Elvis for help because ā€œmother she stops crying, when youā€™re on the radioā€. Itā€™s the closing track ā€˜You Must Have Loved Him Onceā€™ where Mullan gets most personal, revealing that she wrote this song about her parents ā€œafter going through some pretty heavy therapyā€. Loveā€™s Bonfire is a raw and incisive offering from an undeniably powerful singer and songwriter. We hope it breaks your heart. ā€˜Loveā€™s Bonfireā€™ is released 9TH March 2015 on Raindog Records via Absolute. "Sublime, haunting and beautiful" BBC 6 Music "Say hi to Suffolkā€™s Joni Mitchell" Q "Exquisite" Guardian "She cuts through the ostentatious eccentricities of other female artists currently dominating the charts" Independent on Sunday "Gorgeous song-craft....goes straight to the heart" folkradio.co.uk

  9. Ian Prowse is coming to Sheffield on November 13th to play Maida Vale Tickets available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/285556 Who Loves Ya Baby follows on from the success of The Best of Ian Prowse, a compilation of his work with the bandā€™s Pele and Amsterdam, which was released to critical acclaim in 2012. This new album sees Ian cut loose as a solo artist and features twelve brand new songs, all perfectly showcasing his considerable talents as a songwriter and performer par excellence. ā€œAn absolute triumph, I've played it four times on the trot alreadyā€ - (Miles Hunt - The Wonder Stuff) ā€œThe man who gave us the classic Does this train stop on Merseyside does it againā€ - (Elvis Costello) ā€œAn epic album, 9/10!ā€ (Ian McNabb) ā€œHe sure knows how to pen a proper song this fella, the music shinesā€ - (Christy Moore) Ian Prowse, often called the ā€œScouse Springsteenā€, is best known for his work as main man with the groups, Pele (1990's) and the 7-piece group, Amsterdam (2000's). One of his most famous songs, Amsterdamā€™s Does This Train Stop On Merseyside, was a huge favourite of the late DJ John Peel ā€“ he featured the song on his last ever Festive Fifty and it has been well documented that it often reduced him to tears on air. The song has gone on to be covered by many others, including Christy Moore, Miles Hunt and Ian McNabb. In recent years, Ian Prowse has completed a couple of degrees, ā€œjust for the hell of itā€ and the album is, in part, inspired by his degree in Modern History and Masters in Irish music, for which he wrote his thesis on Irish Music. He has also become a father for the first time. Who Loves Ya Baby will be supported by a series of live dates in the UK during the Autumn.. The shows will be a mix of solo appearances alongside shows with Amsterdam, with whom he still performs.

  11. We've got Harp And A Monkey coming to The Greystones.Tickets available http://www.wegottickets.com/event/269502 Harp and a Monkey mix traditional folk instruments with electronic beats and background an electro-storytelling set of songs, old and new, that celebrate Northern life, in a style that makes then, according to fRoots ā€œone of the most vital and charismatic things happening in English folk music right nowā€. With harp, viola, guitar, banjo, glockenspiel, electronic beats and a vocal reminiscent of Elbowā€™s Guy Garvey their songs translate to other areas as tales of everyday life. Featuring Old Wives Tales, the aftermath of war and family days out, with a stage presence that always raises a smile, Harp and a Monkey celebrate real heroes in songs like men Digging Holes and Walking in the Footsteps of Giants ā€“ about those who led the Kinder Mass Trespass, then went to fight fascism in Spain. Great reviews for second album All Life is Here are supplemented by their next project: a set of songs relating to the centenary of World War One. Neither jingoistic nor anti war it looks at life for those involved and the role of music in their lives. Links: Molecatcher Digging Holes Soldierā€™s Song Katyā€™s Twinkly Band Old wives tales
