  1. Bob I attended Sharrow Lane School from 1952 to going to Newfield in 1958. I also lived on Vincent Road at number 50, next door but one to the school. Memory not that good, but the teacher I particularly remember was Mr Buxton. Don't know which part of Vincent Road you lived on but I remember Linda Rolfe, Steven Jones and David Hill. ---------- Post added 12-12-2012 at 22:29 ---------- Bob should have also said my name is Roy Butler ---------- Post added 12-12-2012 at 22:42 ---------- Running man, sorry perhaps a bit late in the day, but only just recently joined. Is there any chance of emailing me your photographs of the exterior. It would appear that the interior changed so much from my day. One memory from the interior was a stuffed squirrel in a display cabinet, can you recall this?
  2. Runningman, Albert was a giant of a man that would dwarf 'Desperate Dan'. He had fists like buckets, but having said all that he was the original gentle giant from the old Castle Green Charge Office, whose mere presence calmed many a situation. I was privileged to have known him and will be sadly missed.
  3. oscar2157? butl435? is there a connection. Thanks for the reply and bringing back further memories, I would think you came across Mr Gallagher as well! I used to live on Vincent Road next door but one to the school. On my finale year at Sharrow Lane I was at the Sitwell Road site in Mr Buxton's class. The girls were in a similar building opposite the boys. I remember the art teacher Mr Jones at Newfield, particularly spending hours on a painting made up from dots. Two of my old friends from round about your time were Lol Harper and Steven Jones - any memories. ---------- Post added 12-12-2012 at 21:23 ---------- Thanks for the reply, you are right about Lawrence Harper and his relative - Ernest (Ernie) Harper. Lawrence and I occasionally trained together round Netheredge and Sharrow. His parents owned a green grocers shop at the corner of Sharrow Lane and Club Garden Road, they were really nice people. Lawrence and his wife Victoria moved somewhere down south and I last saw them a number of years ago when they visited another 'old boy' Steve Jones, when he had a pub near Tenter Street in Sheffield. At that time from memory I believe Lawrence was working on helicopters. I am not sure about the American teacher, I thought his first name was Jim, but there again names don't come easily these days. I would appreciate it if you could pass on my regards to Albert, didn't he live on Club Garden Road as well?
  4. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: James Butler Date: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 Subject: Reply to thread 'Newfield School History' To: Sheffield Forum <[email protected]> Mary, as I remember it on my final year 62/63 I was in form 5/2 Mr Houdmont being our form teacher. I believe Mr Wilson (Chinney) was the deputy head at that time. Jim Witherford was the PE teacher and personally he was very supportive to myself in my 'running' abilities. I don't know if anyone else can remember, but my first teacher at Newfield was an American exchange teacher. Can anyone else remember him?
  5. Danny, I went to Newfield between 1958 - 63 and recall a lot of the names mentioned in many of the treads, particularly Lawrence Harper and Albert Meryill. On leaving school in 63 I became an apprentice mechanic and in 71 I joined the Police Service. Now retired and enjoying life on holidays particularly cruising the Caribbean. Others I particularly remember we're Michael Bracey, Michael Criche (murdered) Paul Gillott. Favourite teacher had got to be Mr Houdmont, strict but fare, you knew where you stood. Went on the school trip to Switzerland and received the record number of 'slipperings' fron, I believe Mr Snaith. There was one other teacher I recall who had a Scottish name who was renowned for throwing the blackboard rubber, chalk, or hitting you across the knuckles with a ruler - imagine today! At school I was very much into cross country running and did represent the school and did win points for my house (can't remember the name, but it was green) at the school sports day. Prior to attending Newfield I was at Sharrow Lane, my last teacher being Mr Buxton. Strangely there is no mention of him on their site for such an iconic teacher who was a legend in his own day.
