  1. You can have all the security in the world, but unfortunately you have to stop using it at some point in order to use the bike... But nice victim blaming bro.
  2. Be mindful that it was the mods that lumped my thread in with all the police complaints, I was simply reporting the fact that it happened and to be aware, because if it happens to you you'll likely get no police support. Prevention better than cure and all that.
  3. What are we supposed to do, just quietly ignore the fact there aren't enough police to deal with this sort of thing and just hope it gets better somehow? That's exactly what they (by which I mean this government) would like us to do. If we're not gathering in places like this to share our experiences and demand the Police do better, then how is anyone to know the truth of just how stretched they are, what austerity actually means in the real world, to real people? I suppose the correct course of action is write to your MP...oh yeah, I don't have one of those either! So yeah, I'm going to publicly complain about the police while they're not fit for purpose, and it is my right as a taxpayer to do so.
  4. Ok so now this is a thread for arguing about whether the police are useless or not, ok fine. My original point was for people in this area to be aware of the type of crime being committed around here, because it is unusual for the area, afaik. As for crime, in the end it was criminal damage, as I now have a chunky repair bill. Also, riding a moped with three people on it, with no numberplate, and I would hazard a guess no insurance. Yeah, they had not much to go on, but it wouldn't have been hard to spot kids on mopeds, it would be illegal to carry one pillion if they didn't have a full licence, which I doubt. If they'd at least come round and shown their faces I'd have been happy, at least I'd have known cops on the street were around and aware and I wasn't just a statistic. Yeah they probably couldn't have arrested anyone, but if they don't even show up these people know they have free reign to do this type of crime, which is why it's so prevalent right now. But yeah, I'm crazy for expecting the police to investigate a crime 🙄 edit: If this thread must be combined, at least make the title Motorbikes and not just bikes...
  5. @mods please return my thread to its own thread, the subject was intended to raise awareness of the fact that there are bike thief gangs in the area, now it's buried in a thread of arguments about whether or not the police are useless... Also it was an attempted theft, not a 'potential' theft.
  6. Yeah I called 999 first and they asked if the crime was in progress, I said it was like a few minutes ago and they just said you'll have to call 101.
  7. Off Cross Lane. (Obviously not posting exact location on here! Bad enough these three assholes know where it lives now..) About 2:30 if anyone saw a moped 3-up flying about... Definitely not allowed a bike in the kitchen! Have a garage for the winter though
  8. Yesterday afternoon had someone try and rob my bike off the drive in S10/crookes area, I'd only had it unlocked for 10 minutes and I was right there washing my other bike. He dropped it and ran off when he saw me, got on the back of a scooter with two other kids and sped off. Presume they were riding around looking for bikes and got very lucky, I hadn't seen anyone watching the house. Stay vigilant, other bikers! Keep it locked up even if it feels safe! Police were absolutely uninterested, didn't bother doing anything. Took 35 minutes just to get through to someone on 101. Actually asked me to look for fingerprints and CCTV!
  9. It seems unlikely for so many reasons, that Uber would come into the marketplace, push all competitors out with low prices, and then put prices up so far that people actually stop going out, thus presumably putting themselves out of business, but that's a nice dystopian future fantasy world you've created to justify your point of view. Uber do have vehicle rules, if you bothered to do any research. I posted a car list many pages back from another city before they started here. I don't know about City but they certainly have significantly higher standards than most/any of the black cab owners in this city, both in terms of vehicle and service. And UberExec is a higher standard than almost all of city's cars, for very slightly more cost. I don't understand your xenophobia of anything outside of Sheffield, does nobody in Rotherham take taxis, is there no market for them there? What makes you think everyone in Rotherham is desperate to operate in Sheffield? And who actually cares?
  10. Some interesting notes on surge pricing during the last Tube strike - http://newsroom.uber.com/london/2015/07/tube-strike/
  11. It's simple supply and demand, blame capitalism, not Uber!
  12. I think the answer to the question is no, because there are too many people with attitudes like Timehs around! JFKs advice is sound, assertive riding is something you're trained to do as a motorcyclist but applies equally, if not more so because of the speed differential between cyclists and traffic. I see a lot of cyclists on country roads riding two-abreast though, which while assertive seems to put themselves at more risk than being single file! I would hate to cycle on the city roads though because it's dangerous and unpleasant!
  13. Probably because there is a lot of people wanting to fly into London, not a city three hours away from London? Building another runway in Sheffield isn't going to create demand! There don't appear to be any flights to France from there, that would be a start!
  14. Well, maybe I will and i'll claim the money back and put it down to a hazard of modern life having felt the benefit of electronic systems thousands of times with no problem. You should watch out using cash machines btw, analogue systems are hardly immune to fraud... maybe just not leave the house and keep all your money under the bed? Much safer that way.
  15. Well, that's one user. The article states 'thousands' have reported their accounts being compromised, out of more than 8 million users. Yeah i'll take those odds. In any case, Uber have said they'll refund any fake trips, and on top of that bank your bank will protect you from fraud also, so it's hardly a gamble. Your bank account cannot be 'drained' through Uber, unless you have very little in there. Worst case scenario is a fraudulent driver racking up lots of fake trips. A fake passenger would be limited by far they could get a driver to take them, and it's not like they'd get anything out of it other than being a long way from where they started, you can't withdraw or transfer cash from uber...
