  1. Follow the lives of 9 men of Walkley who fought and died during the First World War. We are holding two special storytelling events based on the lives of the men of Walkley Reform Club who are commemorated in the First World War memorial windows in Walkley Community Centre. The performances are suitable for adults and childsren aged 8 and over. The stories will be performed by acclaimed storyteller Simon Heywood, and events will be suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over. The lives of the men will be brought vividly and dramatically alive in stories that will take the men from Sheffield civilians and Reform Club members to soldiers fighting and dying on the Western Front. The events are based on theresearch of the Walkley Historians who have brought these 9 men back as residents of Walkley and Crookes and traced their lives from birth through childhood, early careers to enlisting in the army and their deaths on the battlefields of France and Flanders. You can read their histories on our First World War pages. There will be two performances during the afternoon of Saturday 29th November at Walkley Community Centre. One begins at 2:00pm and the other at 3:30pm. Doors open thirty minutes before each performance. Crookes First World War historian Gavin Holliday will have a display of original war time objects, uniforms and maps. There will be a small cafe run to raise funds for Walkley Community Centre. Tickets are available from Beeches of Walkley. They are priced £2.50 each.
  2. We are trying to trace any family and a photograph of a Sheffield-born soldier Archie Shelley who died in the First World War. Archie served in the Grenadier Guards and was wounded in France on the 16th May 1915. Before that he worked at Neepsend Gas Works. We are looking for descendants of his sisters and brothers - Charles and George Shelley, and Emma Mease. We think they lived in Sheffield and Chesterfield. The grand-daughter of Charles was Geraldine Mary Jepson who married James Plumb in Chesterfield in 1943. If anyone knows grand-children of Charles, George or Emma can they please ask them to get in touch? We are hoping that a Shelley family photograph with Archie in it has been passed down the family. We are restoring the memorial window of Archie in Walkley Community Centre. The building was the Walkley Reform Club of which Archie was a member. Each member who died in the First World War had a stained-glass window memorial with his or her photograph. The photographs are now faded so if we can find his photo they can replace it. The Centre will hold a memorial service in August 2014 to which the families of the men will be invited. If you know of his surviving family can you please contact them and please post here or click on my username to send me a private message.
  3. We are planning to mark out the even numbered houses of Harworth Street, between 2 and 62 for the Ruskin Park Fun Day on the 6th July 2013. Harworth Street was demolished during slum clearance in the early 1970s. School children from Walkley Primary School and, hopefully, St Mary’s will measure out and mark the houses during the week before the fun day. We would like to display the names of the people who lived in the houses, along with their jobs and any surviving photos if possible, for visitors to the fun day to see. We will also create a discovery trail for children. We've found names of residents in the Electoral Registers and Street Directories but would like to find out a bit more for the displays. Does anyone have any information, memories or photos of the people who lived in the even-numbered houses of Harworth Street houses during the 1960s and early 1970s before demolition? If you can help out please get in touch.
  4. Hi, Can you ask your mother about the people on Harworth St please? We would like to know about the people living on the even numbered side in advance of the day so we can make small displays saying who they were on the location of each house. We're also looking for any photos of the street too. We are also doing an oral history project about Walkley during the 1950s-80s and the slum clearance. Do you think your mother or you would be willing to be recorded talking about your memories of Harworth St? Cheers, Bill

  6. Great (if only there was a facebook style like button!). Do you fancy bringing a circular blue plaque, the one's often seen on buildings where famous people lived, down to the Edwardian wing of the old Jessop hospital next week?
  7. Hi, does anyone know of famous Sheffielders who were definitely born in Jessop's hospital?
