  1. Yes it is. However I warn all people in Sheffield that the tour has already started. Or at least the "pro cyclists" are already out and about getting ready and I have to say I'm not impressed. As the face of cycling in Yorkshire you might have thought they would at least wait for red traffic lights and stay on the correct side of the road, but no. I had to watch out for two guys at i was driving on Brightside Lane this afternoon. One appeared from behind a bush while my traffic light was green, and his mate was on the wrong side of the road directly in front of me. Yes I do cycle, yes i drive a car, yes i'm planning on watching the tour go past my house and yes the closures are a nightmare, if not only for the fact they shut almost every road from 7am despite the race not coming through until 4pm, thus causing everyone to get there early, or face the M1 nightmare.
  2. You boss asks you to do 10% extra work, and fair enough they offer to pay. But you're already busy and want to go home. Who's the boss, you or you boss? Amey might be a private company, but they're still humans that work and might not want to do 50hr weeks. Equally, if they've already booked in the road closures, they can't suddenly add in 30 extra driveway crossings and still expect to finish in time. If they did you know someone would be on this forum complaining they didn't finish quick enough.
  3. Similar here, my car was in for an MOT and I asked about doing other work. They never phoned with a price, so I went elsewhere. The second garage took one look at it, fixed the problem and refused to take a penny from me since it only took a few seconds. Should I say that the first place was a national chain while the second was a local garage?
  4. You mean the big green and purple areas on the map which are 2015/14 respectively??? No I can't see them either.
  5. You do realise that TUPE transfer means that it's the same people, doing the same job with a different name on the t-shirt. It shouldn't have failed already unless there is a reason, ie poor workmanship/ poor materials, or it could have been a water/gas leak (like on Holywell Road). Tell them so they can fix it. Tell your councillor that you think they should have done a better job and you'd like some answers. If they keep messing up they will only have to keep repairing it at their cost. Eventually they will either sort themselves out, or loose the contract.
  6. Correct. The design guidance from government states this so instead many locations use text to indicate which lane is for each exit, and white lining/hatched areas to guide vehicles to the appropriate exit.
  7. Ohh no! I'll have to turn on my car headlights or carry a torch with me now. That's so unfair of the council/Amey to make me think ahead of going out at night. What did you expect would be involved when replacing almost every street light in Sheffield? Or different argument, would you rather the council/amey save a few quid on the street lighting bill, or cut back front line services? There is no legal requirement for them to provide lighting, so why shouldn't they just turn them all off? Rant off
  8. First it's four years early and you seemed content, now it's a week late in being complete and you're complaining As for the comments from others about planning off the edges and leaving the centre, this is normal over the world. They put more material on top and you get more strength out of the road. As for those complaining about "only taking off 3 inch", how much do you want them to take off? Maybe there isn't anything wrong with the base and it's only the top thats got a problem. How many potholes do you find that are more than 3inch? Amey has been in business doing this type of work for how many years?? Yet people on here think they are more qualified to judge than the professionals employed to do it on a daily basis. By all means complain about poor workmanship or problems they cause, but don't preempt failure. They've been here a year and can you really say it's worse than SCC? would so much work have been done if Amey hadn't been here? :Rant off:
  9. Not a surprise, they wanted to charge me almost £300 to "install" which turned out to be "plug it in". Then they told me that it was to replace the BT socket inside the house as they couldn't grantee it was up to spec, despite the house only being built in 2012 and they refused to just send some out to check before handing over the cash and signing up to a deal. Needless to say I went with another provider who went out of their way to get cable into my house and provide me with impeccable service.
  10. I have the Swann 4000 and love it. The camera image is clear, the manual written in good English and the whole thing was simple to setup and install single-handed. For ~£400, it's peace of mind, plus the web-based viewing and automatic emailing reassure me. A friend (he's a cop) also recommended to spend "about a grand" for a better system, but he also noted that most things a thief would take wouldn't cost you that to replace or cover the excess, so only worth the money if you really want to catch the person. Obviously even the best CCTV is stuffed when you wear a mask, so for me it's more of a deterrent than prevention.
  11. "Drainage works" to install a new culvert. The trees will be replaced afterwards, though likely with smaller ones that will take time to grow.
  12. I just had my £400 bike stolen from my back garden. It was covered, behind a fence and locked with cable and D to the wall. Seemingly someone was really determined to get it and brought a grinder along to get it, waited for me to leave the house and went for it. Having lived in Sheffield only a few months it really puts me off having anything "flash" in public view. A determined thief will get through any lock you put on the bike.
  13. Not near Crookes but i've used these guys on Attercliffe Road twice for my car, and both times i was straight onto the ramp and no fuss. I think the shop name is now "Euro Tyres" or similar, but this is the location. Google Map Edit: Last time they charged about £30 to change all four tyres (with balance) and dispose of the olds. No tracking.
  14. Speedy: I didn't drive in conditions above 10C since November. Where i live, and at the times i drive, it's not seen the sunny side of 8C. Additionally, if you can tell me at what temperature my winter tyres become unsafe, please educate me as i cant find an answer. (see my comments below) Gym_rat: So two years ago your car was rubbish, and now suddenly in the same conditions it fine? Yes i can down down the hill faster than any other car, because I know I can a) turn at the corner and b) stop in time. The house of commons has had a lengthy debate on the benefits of winter tyres and the only reason it's not become law so far is that no government is willing to mandate that people have to spend their own money and the police couldn't realistically enforce it other than to void your insurance should you have an accident without the appropriate tyre on the car. I've found a 25 page debate on a major car forum on the use of Winter tyres in the summer, and the only outcome is that nobody can agree when you should take them off. I've found only one website that actually quotes a temperature, but this was one independent reviewer, with only one car, one type of tyre and only one winter to test the theory. All of the retailers and manufacturers quote that winters are better than summers at below 7C, but do not quote when winters become unsafe. I agree that summers therefore are better than winters at above 7C, but at what temp should i swop back? there must be a cross over else we'd all be changing our tyres half way along the road
  15. Salt doesn't stop snow!! How many times do the news and road agencies have to say this!! Gritting salts reduce the temperature at which water freezes. Snow falls on salt and settles, the small amount of snow that does fall on the grit will turn to water and sit on the ground, but the rest of the snow will stay. Rain gets rid of snow, it also gets rid of the salt the gritter would have put down, so Amey stopped gritting and get in trouble for not throwing money down the drains? Grit bins are only get filled if people tell the council/Amey that it's been used up. If it's used by your neighbour that's Amey's fault? As for changing crews over, fair enough if there was a down time, but we cant expect Amey to run gritting crews 24/7 when the snow happens to fall.
