  1. i think you may need to give a bit more information, you need to follow the rehoming thread rules and use a template

  4. we got our 2 from the cat shelter, both strays, both wonderful with the children, all vaccinated and spayed, the ladies who work there are lovely and really committed to finding the right cat for your home, best thing we ever did

  9. hi there, we have recently adopted 2 cats from the shelter, we were hoping to adopt another and were torn between 2, the lovely gentle sadie or the new and affectionate sugar, but sadly they won't fit into our family or unfortunetly cat dynamics. Sadie was truely wonderful and deeply affectionate, has lost a terrible amount of weight due to shelter stress but was wary of my younger members and we didnt feel it would be fair to her if she didnt feel truly comfortable. sugar was a cracker but quite dominant and as we have 1 dominant cat, and our cats nose was out of joint adding a placid, non threatening cat so she wouldn't cope with sugar, i was so upset to leave without another, but we do have 3, and right now the dyamics work. Rosie lives upstairs, she chooses it that way, we've given up trying to encourage her to come downstairs, shes perfectly happy there, she has her litter tray in the toilet, and her food in my sons room where she spends the majority of her time, either sleeping on his bed or playing with him. Jade chooses to spend all her time downstairs either sleeping on my bed or playing with me and my daughter, she's not interested in going upstairs, the disabled kitten runs all over the house and plays with everybody...lol. Thats just cats, she will come out of her shell, once she feels safe and secure. I might just start her off in one room, and once she feels happy and safe there, start introducing her to other rooms. As long as she knows where her food and litter is, she'll soon come to realise you ean no harm and that there is nothing scary out there. Good luck, she is such a pretty little thing.
  10. i was just going to say the cat shelter, its 'kitten season' so there will be plenty there in the next week or 2, give them a ring, they'll be all vaccinated etc as well, good luck, em
  11. hi, we've basically taken in a kitten that has some type of hip dysplasia, it wasn't planned as we were supposed to be picking up a cat from the shelter tomorrow, but we were in a situation where we couldn't leave it. its back legs are really splayed outwards, and hocks in, it seems to get around okay but its very obvious somethings wrong. Any advice? I am going to take it to the vet to get it checked over and see what can be done but if anyone has ever heard of this and could offer any advice, i'd really appreciate it.... my cat hated it on sight, so thats another issue - successful introductions. currently the kitten is in a large dog crate tonight, but is let out downstairs and i was going to try and keep swopping them around for a few days so i could get the scents intermingled, then do slow introductions whilst kitten was having crate time, then start feeding them together whilst kitten is having crate time and then not sure what to do tbh. Last thing I want is for either to get hurt..so advice would be appreciated Really cross in a way as i'll have to let the shelter down but I couldnt see this kitty dumped just cause it wasnt perfect. Hopefully, these 2 will be settled in a few days and the kitty i've reserved for collection tomorrow will still be around for us to collect thanks all, em
  12. We use animal friendly, all profits donated to charity, came out best in compare the market, plus they insure older animals too at no extra cost.
  13. dear god whats wrong with people??? so glad you found it and have taken it in em
  14. oh poor you, I'd be heartbroken too. What a horrible woman, rehoming a dog is never an easy decision but because its a puppy? and she cant be bothered with the most basic training?? You did do the right thing, it isn't your responsibility. she has got be left to sort it out. I doubt she would have left it, she saw you were an animal lover and thought she'd try it on, and try and guilt you in to do doing it all for her. Can you remember what type of pup it was, colour etc?? might be worth asking the pound ladies, or on here, etc to watch out just so you can get peace of mind for a follow up. hopefully she'll find someone just as nice as you to take him, dont feel bad, you did do the right thing, ((hugs)) em
  15. boundary road, no offence but no surprises there, you've got a lot of late teens that hang about in that area especially in the evening, it will 'grow up' but right now, honestly, i'm not surprised they moved, tbh its pretty much a no go after 6/7pm, I have a number of friends who live up there who aren't happy, but be sensible, leave nothing out, if you own a car, then get security lights/cameras, good fencing, and good locks, most the people up there are really lovely, and they resent the gangs as much as anyone, but like I say, it won't last for ever, just be safe, good luck
  16. if you want to just sit back and enjoy, gerbils, if you want to be hands on and wild and free then rats, ran sheffield gerbil rescue for a while before my daughter and I developed terrible allergies, despite using petalcleanse :-( so lived with both, we used natural peat/shavings and hay in ours, meant that 2 gerbils could live in a 12x18x24 tank with a gerbilarium on top quite happily, could make the most amazing tunnels, and only need cleaning out 2 to 3 times a year. Rats need to be out everyday, lots os stimulation and lots of hands on stuff.
  17. Of course you can get one for under 50, you can get one for free.....but the point i was trying to make was that for an extra 20, you could get 1 already eutered, healthchecked, microchipped and vaccinated. I think the OP are just saying to consider that the problem with the 'back street breeders' as it were dont breed to ensure no long term health problems, good temprement etc. I certainly wasn't having a go, its just I always go for rescues because I always get the animal I want, with all 'needs' met as listed above which I then dont have to 'worry' about getting sorted. I'm not saying you wouldn't or that its too much hassle or anything like that, just from my perspective its just so much easier for me having an animal thats had everything sorted and I can just pootle off to the vets once a year for jabs and a health check. I don't think anyone meant to cause offence, just sometimes there are naive people on here just after the quick buck option which often becomes expensive and then off to the pound, either with puppies in a box, or because the temprement becomes a problem through poor breeding or ignorance of the breed. I wish you all the best in trying to find the dog for you.
  18. if you can pay a little more, like 70, there are quite a few in the local rescues. These usually include the price of microchipping and neutering as well as vaccinations so could work out a lot cheaper in the long run, try http://www.ineedahome.co.uk, good luck
  19. This is more of a discussion tbh. On my other thread, cat litter tray whoop whoop I have recently adopted a cat, 1 year old from the shelter, she's been there a couple of months, found on a doorstep with a box full of kittens. so assumedly, shes been living as an indoor cat for a while, rearing her kittens, then onto the cat shelter. I am therefore assuming that she has adjusted to life as an indoor cat, would that be right?? and in fairness, could she then remain so?? I ask not just because were discussing another cat on the other thread but also because my aspergers 9 yr old has totally fallen in love with her and her with him, and i'm now afraid to ler her out because if anything happens to her, he'd be distraught beyond words. She appears happy enough, spends all her time in my sons room, either at his window or curled up on his bed, but would I be doing a bad thing by choosing now. not to let her out, or do we both have to get a grip and accept she should have access as in her long and distant past she once did?? conversely then, and this is just out of interest, could an indoor cat ever adjust to the great outdoors if they were ever given that option?? opinions appreciated....
  20. terror was lovely, why on earth did they separate from his friends?? I thought he was lovely, but I guess I went in with the intention of having outdoor cats. Rosie is only 1, i'll put this on another thread, is it possible she could adjust to life as an indoor cat? we can only assume she was an outside cat as she came with kittens in a box. I'll have a chat with hubby, he was only happy having a litter tray in the home on the short term, not sure how he'll feel about it long term... o gawd think I might have to ring them about terror in the morning..........
  21. currently fed on felix, but seeing as I feed orijen/arden grange to the dogs, I feel I should really be feeding the cats a decent meal, what would people recommend?? I'm assuming a combination of wet and dry is best for cats?? thanks all emma
