  1. I rode at Silverdale road stables from 1956 - 1960 when I moved to Derbyshire and was lucky enough to get my own pony ! Whilst living in Sheffield (NetherEdge) it cost all my pocket money, saved for 2weeks (4shillings an hour at Anne Barbers ) so that I could ride one week and spend the other weekend mucking out , cleaning stuff and anything I was asked as long as it was to do with ponies & stables . I did work with horses for a while when I left school . Now a long time since I went riding -- but I reckon I could still enjoy it. Thanks all for sharing - it brought back lots of memories.
  2. Hi Fact finder ---- Auntie Mary - Mary Green did work for accountant Clifford Kershaw ( spoke to her daughter Liz who confirmed that as far as she remembers Clifford was Bill Amies accountant and had his office near the Sheffield University).
  3. Hi S.Jacklin , was your dad called Joe and Mum ,Millie - with one of your sisters called Rosemary ? -If so I'm trying to contact Rosemary (known to me as Jackie -we went to school together at King Ecgberts and we moved out to Calton House in Derbyshire in 1960 ? Gillian Carnelly
  4. Hi Fact finder , Grandad Bill died when I was about 10yrs old - will get out the archives & contact my cousin Liz (Green as was - Auntie Mary's daughter). Gran & Grandad Amies lived in NetherEdge . Bill Amies was a keen fisherman and enjoyed shooting . He and a friend - ? your Grandad -dug a large pond out at Bradwell ,near the old mill . They stocked it with trout and shared the fishing there. I have lots of family photos of the pond & us all enjoying holidays together. Will try to get more info from family.
  5. Hi Factfinder, good to hear from you . If you look up website for W.E.Amies &Co ( Quarry Lane, Chatsworth Rd. Chesterfield ) you will see some of the detail you ask - I only know a little and intend to visit the works. Do ring them and ask them about history of the injection moulding business - they may well have info about your Dad at work. David Shepley ( production manager) is on the new website . I believe he is relation of Frank Shepley who worked alongside my Grandad when I was young (about 60yrs ago)He may have some history to share . My aunt Mary Green (nee Amies ) was the bookkeeper until grandad Bill Amies retired. aunt Mary is on the old Amies & Co photo (b/w) (on page "About") grandad is 2nd row from front in the middle and Aunt Mary 2nd on his right as we see the photo. Is your dad on this photo ?
  6. I thought Dungworth was the name of the riding school owners , whereabouts was it ? I probably went once but for some reason not regularly (possibly too far out ) I remember meeting a young girl on an excitable ex racehorse one day on the road to Foxhouse (I was walking with my mum & brother). She could not control the horse and was getting very frightened ,I was only about 9yrs old and the horse was swinging about all over the place obviously wanting to gallop off. My mum stopped a car and asked the driver to call at Anne Barbers stables for help as we could stay with this girl & horse but they needed to get home safely.Anne turned up soon after and sorted horse & rider out . Girl dismounted and led horse home on tarmac road ! I learnt a big lesson that day ,Thanks Anne !
  7. Thanks me&pippo ,great pictures of Sheffield ! My cousin still lives on NetherEdge Rd , I moved away & now live in the monsoon area of Lancashire -almost daily rain .
  8. Hi Scousemouse and Jim Lane ,yes you were right Silverdale road was where stables were situated . Do you remember that Anne called many of the ponies after months of the year. I rode some and mucked out most of them ! I remember January ( was he a dark grey ),Feb was ? black with white points , March ? April was a young dappled grey I think , May ? bay, June was brown and rather stubborn nature- I think , July was a young grey with a mane that stuck out at all angles - August Sept and October & the rest well, perhaps you can put me straight on the details ? When I went there - (every Saturday & as much of school holidays as I could do) I used to help out whenever possible - no job refused . I saved my pocket money up as I could only afford one lesson every 2 weeks - was it 2 or 4 shillings an hour? I used to walk there and back from Glen Rd in NetherEdge.
  9. Nether Edge Hall was situated on NetherEdge Rd , about 50yds before the corner of Glen rd on RHS going downhill . opposite that was a greengrocers /grocers where my aunt used to shop . At the back of NetherEdge Hall there used to be tennis courts (WW2 and before )These were built on in about 1956-8, the red brick semis are still there on Glen Rd & round corner on Ashland Rd ,I lived at 12 Glen Rd and I remember the hall still being used when our family moved into the brand new house.
  10. Hi does anyone remember the stables at Eccleshall .I started learning to ride there in 1957 -- we were fortunate if we were given a free ride up to Long Line in Dore where some ponies were put out to rest for a couple of weeks after hard work .They had a full size carved wooden horse in the covered part of the yard which if I remember right Anne said her Dad used to use for teaching purposes. Popular rides were up the old quiarry lane - unmetalled in those days so wecould canter all the way from bottom to top. It never seemed to rain in those days !
  11. when I went there ,the schoolyard was large and had a bike shed and also grassed area which I believe was walled off , I remember the railings being removed from the low wall which separated the boys & girls playground -- no more segregation at playtime .
  12. Thanks Tofty , confirmed when I looked at photo showing the view down Fargate -- I used to work in the Tech .as lab technician (1965 ish ) and liked to have a look at the shops in my lunch hour .
  13. I am a Carnelly and both my parents born in Sheffield and their parents lived there too . Will get out the archives if you need more than just names - William Carnelly m Mabel Lockwood -had 2 children Dennis Robert and Hilda Carnelly .My dad was Dennis Robert Carnelly . Born 1915 Abbeydale area . My mum was Margaret Elizabeth Amies born 1914.
  14. Remember Massarella's .I believe they had great success in the late 50's onwards with showjumpers .
