    Strokes?

Thank you all so much. The stories are inspiring, and the advice is helpful. I'll report back.
  2. Just started volunteering on a stroke ward. I don't do anything practical, just keep people company. They gave me a lot of training, were absolutely brilliant, but I was wondering if any of your forumers have real-life experience -- maybe you had a stroke? Maybe you have a friend who has had one? Sometimes it's as easy as having a friendly conversation, but a lot of people with stroke may have some form of aphasia and find conversation exhausting. On top of that, they may have tremor, and some also have dementia. Probably the most frequent thing I see is clearly intelligent and kind people who struggle to communicate. So ... Any examples from your lives of nice ways to spend time together? Everyone is different, so the more examples I have, the more chance I can find something that will work with any particular person. Some of the things that have worked for me so far are naughts and crosses, looking at magazines, watching the world go by and just laughing. I also tell some of my life stories and hope I'm not boring them to death. Any real-world advice so I can expand my repertoire?
  3. Annie, thanks so much for starting this important thread. SpecSavers caught an urgent problem for me on Xmas eve a few years ago, and the Royal Hallamshire vision team did wonders to make everything safe. Royal Hallamshire has an emergency eye clinic. The Emergency Eye Clinic is open from 8:30am – 4:30pm - Monday to Friday.
  4. Different strokes for different folks. I'm like tzijlstra and Halibut -- lost more and kept it off longer by switching from car to walking 10,000 steps most days, and improving what I ate. About two stone, and off for two years now. I'm nobody's idea of fit, but my health is much better now. My GP makes me feel like a star. Gym didn't do much for me. My partner does better in group sessions with an instructor. Whatever works! Dozer
  5. Thanks for all the advice, turned out to be helpful! In the end, I cadged a ride from the other half. Parking does look miserable.
  6. Thanks, Nikki. Just found it in the 30,000 pages of info they sent me. Huntsman B Floor. They suggest entrance from Barnsley Road. Does anyone know if it's easy enough to get an Uber from the Northern General. Is there a pickup spot? A
  7. Thank you all! I'm a Northern General virgin, so will err on the side of early. Appreciate the advice re floor layout too.
  8. Ah, it responds to demand, not supply! Thank you again.
  9. Top Cat, thank you for catching that, I think I'm getting stresssed. I meant I am thinking of leaving at 9am. I edited my original post now.
  10. I have to be at Northern General no later than 1030 for a 1045 appt. I know that parking in a nightmare, so plan to take an Uber. I live near Tesco on Abbeydale Road. Any advice on how early I should leave to allow time for traffic and for the fact that it can take a while to get Uber sometimes? Google says 35 minutes at that time of day for transit. I'm thinking of making the Uber request around 9am, is that reasonable or am I allowing concerns to get the better of me and leaving too much time?
  11. Great video, thank you! I think I get it. It's like a thermostat, but for pressure instead of heat, reacting to changes in the incoming line.
  12. Dutch, really interesting -- any idea how the reducer valve works? Don't know much about engineering, but I love this stuff!
  13. Thanks for the recommendation. My first toe in the Reddit water.
  14. I'm someone who tends to like to shop online, but I'll gladly pay extra for the privilege of shopping locally. Most days, we walk an extra 5 mins to go to our cramped local newsagent because they give a smile with our paper. Our local cafes manage a joke even when they are backed up with lunchtime rush. The local bakery gives good advice. Our closest shop remembers a few of our favorites and will explain why they are out if they are out. Our independent laundry is very fair with give and take; sometimes if we have an emergency they'll do us same-day service. Sometimes when they are shortstaffed, they'll ask for a few extra days. It helps that we don't mind walking because the parking around here sucks. I don't know if there are many like us, but if you want our business, here's all you need to do: Have reasonable, predictable hours, including a bit of time before or after work. Be clean, or at least not filthy. Acknowledge your customers if it's a long wait -- we know you get busy sometimes, but it's nice to know you recognise it's not always convenient. If we come into your shop every week for years, remember something about us, or at least spare us a smile. We'll do the same for you. Basically, let's treat each other well.
  15. Really looking forward to seeing this over Xmas. Any advice on cool things to see that a noobie might not notice?
  16. I think the ofo bikes -- the ones that were working anyway -- all went down to London. They are all over the place there.
  17. Wazzock and Haddy, thanks for correcting my "fake news". Great news that they made the cut.
  18. The Sheffield shop on Ecclesall Road does a nice job with our kitchen knives.
  19. Sadly Ernest Wright's has stopped trading. They did make great scissors! https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/historic-sheffield-scissor-company-ernest-wright-and-son-closed-for-good-1-9219197
  20. Just went. Didn't ask for a photo.
  21. Pete Seeger's was a cover version. Written about Daly City, just south of San Francisco. Good article and photos at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boxes
  22. If you prefer not to wait, you could have it redelivered to your address, to someone else's address (as stated above), or for a small fee to your local post office. Explained here: https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redelivery/ Do any posties know why the wait is so long at this one sorting office? In Totley/Dore there was never a wait. But agree, the staff at Woodseats always seem nice and patient ---------- Post added 02-10-2018 at 15:46 ---------- (Just checked, fee for delivery to local post office is 70p)
