  1. The few teachers I know in the UK all have to buy stationery for their students, and art supplies, out of their own salary. I agree that it's sad and ought not be case, but would like to help if I can.
  2. Just saw an article about a website in America where teachers can put up a wishlist for classroom supplies, and donors can pay to provide them. Do we have anything like that in Sheffield? Key bit from the article. The American website is at https://sites.google.com/site/classroomgiving/home. It's a bit amateurish, but its heart is in the right place.
  3. We don't have any family locally. We're currently working and in good health, but wondering about options as we get older. With luck we can stay where we are, which we would love, but aging is a bit of a lottery. If we turn out no longer to be able to walk up stairs, or need a bit of help here and there, what are out options? Bungalow? Retirement community? Dignitas? In the States, there are retirement communities where you can start off living completely on your own, but you can opt into increased services if needed as you get older, starting with a bit of help carrying in groceries, and continuing through nursing. Is there anything like that in Sheffield? We'd probably have to pay for it ourselves, so are looking for that sort of option. Anyone on here dealt with this sort of thing for themselves or their families?
  4. In the US, if I recall correctly "Talking Books" for the blind were done on 16 rpm. Could fit more on a side that way.
  5. Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the advice. Aspire looks pretty cool.
  6. Are there any charity shops that can use working cables, chargers, calculators, etc?
  7. Stacey48 -- hats off to you. Never been a smoker but had to change eating habits a lot due to health concerns (although haven't completely given up yet 🙂 ) Hope you've got a lot of support around you. It has to come from within, but friend/family can really help.
  8. Sounds just appalling. I wasn't sure from your previous post, have you decided to move away? Really sorry that is necessary, but hope you get somewhere you can have peace of mind.
  9. I haven't heard about this aspect, sounds interesting and important. Do you have a link to an article or anything?
  10. Wade, sounds like you are dealing with the situation in the best way possible, and with more empathy than most of us could manage. One more idea. You could try calling the helpline for the mental health charity Mind and ask if they have any suggestions. 0300 123 3393 [email protected] Text: 86463 It's really beyond what you should have to do, but they may have suggestions that we would never think of. Good luck, sorry you have been put in this situation.
  11. We tried twice and were defeated by long queues both times. Really sad to have missed it!
  12. Nicely explained, EB. Could you help with acronyms at the end? PHSE? RSE?
  13. The way it seems to work is you sign up for NextDoor, then post an ad saying what you're looking for in their free classified section. I like NextDoor, great way to keep up on neighbourhood news. Good luck!
  14. Have you tried the local social network called NextDoor? I've seen a number of matches between private landlords and tenants on there. If you don't know NextDoor, it's a bit like Facebook, but for your neighbourhood and ones nearby. Only a very small portion of it is devoted to rentals, but it does seem to work for some people.
  15. Cat Hat: Sorry about the way it loaded. You guessed exactly right what it was. If you do want to look, the main thing isn't the video (which is irrelevant) but the Twitter link, which you can get to by clicking the text under the thumbnail.
  16. Lovely tale -- takes a little while to see how it gets from Colchester Football to Sheffield Space Programme, but worth the effort.
  17. For better and for worse, some interesting points in this article: https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/sheffield-mp-jared-o-mara-likens-his-own-constituents-to-football-hooligans-who-smell-of-processed-meats-1-9680569 The insult called out in the headline shows poor judgement, but his points about making Parliament more disability friendly are thought provoking. I suprised myself reading it, I'm actually a bit more open to the man.
  18. Definitely rude and obnoxious. Hard to know what to do unless you decide to premoderate all posts.
  19. Interesting idea, and I see the value. The biggest challenge I think is in future proofing. Tech is changing so quickly at the moment, I would worry in a few years you would end up with obsolete technology deeply embedded in the fabric of the house. For example, we have an old intercom system and a back-projection TV in our house which are now just eyesores.
  20. The Guardian loved it too. https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2019/mar/23/standing-at-the-skys-edge-review-crucible-downstate-national-richard-iii-alexandra-palace We're very lucky to have the Crucible here.
  21. Darylslinn -- I forgot about Daim Cake. How could I forget about Daim Cake? Yum, Daim Cake!
  22. 7pm, Peace Gardens https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/peace-vigil-to-be-held-in-sheffield-after-diabolical-new-zealand-mosque-terror-attacks-1-9652302 “Sheffield always pulls together at times like these and it’s good to see that happening again. We must not let terrorists beat us." Peace to you all, and especially to our Muslim neighbours.
  23. Sheffield has a vigil tonight at 7 in the Peace Gardens. https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/peace-vigil-to-be-held-in-sheffield-after-diabolical-new-zealand-mosque-terror-attacks-1-9652302 Peace to you all.
  24. I've had good luck with the watch repair service in Atkinson's on The Moor. They do good work, and if it's beyond their expertise they are honest and will tell you.
  25. If I recall correctltly (it's been a while!) they had scads of disabled spots very near the entrance. Might be 75 yards from the entrance to the lift and another 100 yards or so from lifts to food queue. Those meatballs are worth it though.
