  1. Annie -- thanks for news and photos, and for lucid explanation of rotational slip. I learned something.
  2. We were very happy with work done by bmvcarcare.co.uk. They come 'round to your house. Fast, affordable. Chris is the bloke's name.
  3. Sorry you're having problems Grantos01 -- noise can be a real nuisance. I don't have any special knowledge myself, but I think the Council's page on the subject is surprisingly good. https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/environment/environmental-health/pollution/noise-pollution/domestic.html Lots of suggestions on there, hope you find something that works for you.
  4. We've had good experiences at http://www.onlinepictureproof.com/seamanphotographerlimited/about-us/2070 on London Road. (Name always causes titters, but it's an old respected photographer.) They were good with the godkids when we took them, and prices were reasonable.
  5. Hi xxnikixx. Your brother is lucky to have you. It takes a bit of planning, but a lot of boys like watching construction gear in action. You can do this by keeping an eye out for where the big roadworks are going on around Sheffield (there are a lot) and just making a day of walking there, stopping for some tea and a cake, and taking photos to look at later. We also sometimes go to places that hire out construction equipment, like diggers and steamrollers. Some of them have yards open to the public and you can get right up to the equipment, which can be fun. (Not sure who does this Sheffield, but maybe someone here would have a suggestion.) Both are also cheap days out, which can be a help. Would he be interested in trains? He might like http://www.midlandrailway-butterley.co.uk/index.html. We loved it! You already have a lot of great ideas. Hope these help too.
  6. What a great idea! I'm also interested. Male and female teachers both welcome. (I will check out moopind's suggestion as well.)
  7. This company sent large (A4) samples of a number of kinds so we could try them. The one we chose actually feels very nice -- but you're right, most of them are scratchy and unpleasant.
  8. Just saw someone on another thread complaining that forumers never report back after they ask a question, and realised I had failed to that on this very forum. A shame, especially as there was a lot of good help. I filled out the form originally and nothing ever happened. Then I called the follow-up number (which they had kindly put in the confirming email) and they acknowledged that the request appeared to have been lost. I gather that's fairly unusual -- lots of you said it worked for them. Anyway, the very next day the bin was filled. I'll check the neighourhood bin one last time this weekend in case the last snow wiped it out. That way hopefully it will be full for the next snow. May it be long in the future! Thanks everyone!
  9. Hi, just realised I'd not replied. The problem seems to have sorted itself -- not sure why. We had poor coverage in corners of the house, then used an extender which I must have misconfigured because it was a disaster. But then when I turned off the extender, suddenly the coverage was much better. Appreciate your messages, and have filed away your contact information in case the problem recurs, which given my luck with these things will probably be any day now.
  10. Gaze: Sorry to have gone off-line, especially after you had been so nice. Got distracted and forgot to come back to you. I think I found a solution -- some gorgeous soft artificial turf for not too much money. http://www.namgrass.co.uk/. Haven't figured out exactly about about installation so it's not a done deal yet. But the samples were great and so was the pre-sales service.
  11. Spanadora: Thank you to you and your other half. That is a kindness. I hope we never have a cat who meets such an end, but if we did I hope someone is as thoughtful as your partner.
  12. Yesterday I popped into our local cleaners to pick up some dry cleaning for work. I went in feeling grumpy and stressed due to work, and left a minute later smiling because, well, maybe just because they were courteous and smiling themselves, and had a twinkle in their eyes. It got me to thinking that there are a lot of places in Sheffield like that. Which places make you smile? I like these places: - The laundromat on Nether Edge Road. They are always kind and helpful and it's not the easiest place to work. (That's where I was yesterday) - The Pizza Express near Devonshire Green. The long-serving wait staff that have been there for a long time are brilliant. I travel a lot for work and see more Pizza Expresses than is probably good for me, and the staff at that one are head and shoulders above the others, including other ones in Sheffield. - Abbot's cookshop on Abbeydale Road. The blokes who run it always have a kind word and good advice. They know their pots and pans.
  13. I'm a great lover of cake shops, and live right near Steel City. We pop in a couple of times a month. What would make us pop in more often and spend more money? - A homier atmosphere -- less stark white, a bit of quirk, less terrifying Metallica-inspired goods, comfy chairs, and more colour - More gentle lighting, no fluorescents - A bit warmer welcome -- young staff behind the counter are good, but you get the sense they'd rather be somewhere else - No tinny music - Keep the lovely and innovative variety of recipes - Slight alteration in the recipes -- a bit less sweet (not something I say very often as I have a massive sweet tooth) and a bit more flavour; I'd be glad to pay more for this, or to have much smaller sizes - Most important - better richer stronger coffee Hmmm. Looking over that list it looks like I must hate the place -- I don't. Everything is just a LITTLE off for me. The main thing I'd change is the coffee and the looks. But that's just me. But even if they don't change a thing, they are a welcome addition to the neighbourhood! We just want them to last.
  14. Gaze: Thanks, that's kind. We're looking for 10 foot by seven foot. Chaos: That made me laugh. For rugs and paint, there's some sort of law against using the names we learned in nursery. Our house has cinnamon, jungle green, and creamy mocha. Oh god, I'm hungry now.
  15. Thanks Gaze! You've got a good eye for the colour, especially that second one. Would like a Sheffield company or showroom if I can find one, and need a custom size. But I've bookmarked that page in the meantime. Appreciate it!
  16. Am at my wit's end. We want a grass-coloured rug for our dining room. I think the colour is called Jade -- but anything the colour of a football pitch would do, so long as it's not a muddy pitch -- we can take care of that ourselves. Can't be wool, but should be decent quality. Needs to be provided to a non-standard size. Not that we're picky or anything. Have tried John Lewis and most of the places around the part of Chesterfield road where it comes near the city centre. Green carpeting is not fashionable at the moment. Does anyone know someplace that would have some options for us?
  17. I have an old LED watch. The watch shop in Atkinsons (under the stairs in the back) did a good job with the battery.
  18. Good point. I wonder what the policy is.
  19. Thanks Nikita and Speleo1. Very helpful. ---------- Post added 21-01-2013 at 12:11 ---------- Doom -- have you tried filling in the form on the Council website? Nikita says that has worked well, and it's what I tried.
  20. Just curious, has anyone had their grit bin refilled in the last week? I just put in a request on the Council site. My instinct tells me that they will be busy with other things and not to hold my breath, but I was curious if anyone has had any luck. The people on Nether Edge Road have been doing a good job keeping the street and pavements fairly clear. It would be a shame if all that hard work was undone because of no grit.

  22. We have a grit bin on our street, but it's a steep uphill from us and hard to get to when it's slippy. We take one large bucketful to keep in our cellar and use on the pavement and street when it snows, trying to do our bit.
  23. Jeffrey, I think you live in Nether Edge too -- has your mail been OK the last couple of weeks.
  24. Rob_1, thanks, good to know. If I make a formal complaint, I have this hope that it would make the people who design the routes and the staffing see they have a problem and hire a few more people to, um, sort it out. But I have a fear that it will be blamed on our posties, when I can see they aren't the problem. They move pretty fast up and down our steep streets with good cheer. Any advice for the best way of making the complaint? (I phoned Royal Mail tonight. They said they could say for sure there wasn't a problem in our neighbourhood based on the official reports submitted by our local sorting office. When I asked if the situation wasn't a bit odd -- three houses in a row not getting any deliveries except foor two weeks except for two days, she said not odd at all, it had happened to her and her neighbours once too. So that's OK then. She also said we couldn't instigate a complaint unless there we missed delivery three days in a row, so we have to wait until Saturday since we had a delivery on Tuesday.)
  25. Harestone -- That would explain it! ---------- Post added 13-12-2012 at 17:07 ---------- AndrewC -- we're new to the neighbourhood, is this an annual tradition?
