  1. Firethorn, thank you, what a great list! We managed to fit in another walk this weekend. This time S9/Tinsley. Very different from the S36/Penistone walk we took last time. The standard list looked like this for us: Natural sight: Tinsley Park Woods, and especially the little marshy ponds, full of reeds Human-made sight: Statue of the Observers, lovely in its setting Food: we prefer independent cafes, but there wasn't a lot to choose from on a Sunday, so we ended up at the big Costa. It was so clean, like it had just been unwrapped from the shops! Staff were nice too. If it had been a weekday, we would have liked to try Cafe 313. Surprise: We stumbled across Tinsley Cemetery which was nicely kept and a had a homely feel to it. As a second surprise, we walked along a road with dozens of small-to-medium industrial manufacturing buildings. Looked to be thriving businesses. We get so used to the centre and the suburbs, just retail-retail-retail, it was encouraging to be reminded of all the other enterprise in this city. We've loved this city from our first week here almost thirty years ago, so it amazes us to be finding all these other parts with different things to love. Sheffield, thanks for welcoming us so long ago. Next walk: S44/Bolsover. Appreciate any suggestion for natural sights, human-made sights, cafes/food, and places to walk. We only have a few hours at each postcode which isn't enough for everything, but enough to get a flavour.
  2. Thanks for the question, Runningman. Haven’t been there yet, but here’s the Google Maps link.
  3. Sorry to have gone quiet - shortly after posting this I had a prolonged period of being unwell. Now feeling a bit better, we did our first postcode walk last week - S36 Penistone. Somehow in about 30 years we had never been there. We walked from Scout Dyke to the village, at a cafe, saw the viaduct and the churchyard, and then had a great walk back and around the reservoir. Got a call from family and found out a beloved family member is expecting, whilst we were sitting on a very wet log! Anyway, we thought we would go from a beautiful rural area to more urban, S9 and Tinsley. Thinking about a nice walk around Tinsley Park Woods, seeing the statue called The Observer. Any thoughts about a decent place for some grub? Any other recommendations?
  4. By coincidence, I joined a group on the Five Weirs walk this week and we went through the Cobweb Bridge. Was very proud to have seen it here first. Thanks, MM
  5. S35 and S36 now added to the list! So much for my Google skills. Thank you for that advice, and for the specific places to go.
  6. I want to take a 2-4 hour walk around each of Sheffield postcodes in Sheffield. (A lot of the Sheffield postcodes are in different cities.) Probably take me a decade at the rate I go. I'm going to start with S20 and work my way back to S1. For each postcode, I want to experience: Something beautiful Something tasty Something interesting (I think I just described myself! 🤪) Any advice for S20?
  7. Anyone know where to get simit - those Turkish bagels? Ozmen got us addicted then stopped carrying them.
  8. Second for this. Chris doesn't have a garage, he does the work in your driveway. Been using him for years. If you prefer a garage, https://www.carrepairsheffield.co.uk has a good reputtion. John Bee on Abbeydale Road.
  9. If you want a handmade cake, I can recommend https://en-gb.facebook.com/ibakeabit/ Terriffic custom designs, and she really listens to what you want.
  10. Help! Newbie gardener here, wants fresh tomatoes in winter. Anyone have experience they can share? Googled around but all the advice is either for people who have a lot more experience than me, or for people who want to grow cannabis. 😂 Thanks!
  11. THANK YOU. You all are pick of the litter.
  12. Annie's right about this. For anyone who has shoulder problems that can be helped with physio, try Val at City Physio. She has deep academic knowledge, and is also very pleasant to work with.
  13. Is there anyone in Sheffield who can repair/restore broken ceramics?
  14. Has anyone found a good firm to do Crittall windows? I see KJA from Barnsley pop up on Google, has anyone used them?
  15. My dentist open too. Had a filling come out, and they got dressed up in these space suits to do the work. With the space suits and the bright lights, it's good if you want to pretend you're being beamed up to a UFO for some probing.
  16. And sedith wins Sheffield Forum today 🤣
  17. While we're on the topic of libraries, just wanted to say thanks to the staff who, although I think they were on furlough, still helped me set up an online account so I could read ebooks and listen to audio books. Great customer service, efficient and friendly. And nothing like laughing along with a Bill Bryson book to aid mental health. You librarians are the best.
  18. Basset One, thanks for pointing out the reality of collateral damage. Plus it makes people afraid to go out, and empty streets aren't safe. One more thought, and I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd rather no one was getting shot, not even the drug dealers. They all have parents and loved ones and they are human beings too. Not saying anything more than we shouldn't celebrate these deaths, although to be fair, I don't think that's what anyone here is saying.
  19. When we moved to Sheffield in the 90s, his was the only shop we could find "exotic" ingredients like fresh chillies. Lovely man. Shop is now an upscale boozer. How things change!
  20. For me, it was almost a ten years ago. I was randomly Googling about different neighbourhoods we were thinking about moving to and noticed a thread about the Woodseats Bridge. The thread had already been running for four years, but it was getting exciting as they were about to lift the new prefab bridge into place. It was a huge mix of whinging, traffic nerds, engineering expertise, and the usual amount of taking the ****. It was love at first sight. Highlights Bus Man giving advice on how it affected bus routes and posting photos Andy C providing expert commentary Jeffery Shaw saying, when the bridge was halfway completed "Woodseats Road- the unabridged version?" muddycoffee giving regular eyewitness updates Final status: 21 pages. 5 years, 4 months, 26 days Geoff and Mods: Thanks for a great forum, long may it wave.
  21. Brilliant! But don't underestimate the value of smug satisfaction.
  22. Thank you all! A neighbour just told me St Vincent's is open and they are taking LPs.
  23. Doing a clearout, figure it's finally time to get rid of 100+ old vinyl LP albums. Do I just put them in the black bin (after recycling the cardboard covers)? Or is there a charity shop that would take them? Anyone else go through this? Feels terrible getting rid of these old friends, but truth is I don't think I'll ever play them again.
  24. I wish Ikea and other popular shops would install queue-cams. Could see what the queue is like and pick your time. And could be a whole new form of reality TV. "Oh I see Marsha up the road has nowt better to do than queue for 3 hours at Aldi."
