  1. I've been going to Taptonville dentist for many years now. I was with my previous dentist for over 20 years, but had to find a new practice when she retired and the new people no longer did NHS treatment. I've had two different dentists at Taptonville and been more than satisfied with their competency. I've had 3 crowns done and a couple of fillings, but no root canal work. My son had root canal work done at a different dentist and found it to be very very painful afterwards and it took a while to settle down, but it eventually did.
  2. Does anyone have an ancestor called Ernest Witham or Vera Richardson (nee Witham)? I would like to contact anyone from this family, because I have some family photos of theirs.
  3. Well said ie re balancing the books. Mr Micawber's famous, and oft-quoted, recipe for happiness: "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen [pounds] nineteen [shillings] and six [pence], result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery."
  4. Norfolk Street was a lot longer before Arundel Gate was built; even now it extends up behind the Town Hall and past the Peace Gardens where it runs/changes into Union Street. My family used the expression "a face as long as Norfolk Street", also, "a face as long as 40 steps" (did this refer to the steps beside the old PO building in Fitzalan Square, I wonder?). Other expressions were: "a face like a busted clog", "fat as a porky pig"
  5. Couldn't agree more, and hate "Hun" with a passion. Another one I hate is "guys" or "you guys", especially when those thus addressed are female and the person addressing them is too!
  6. I grew up in Harrison Road, Malin Bridge and all the houses, certainly at the bottom end had off-shot kitchens and I'm sure that's how they were originally built. These houses were considered, at least by my mother, as a "step up" from those which had the back room as a kitchen. The former were classed villas. My Nan's house in Haden Street had the back room as the kitchen and the front room opened more or less straight on to the street, whereas the Harrison Road house had a decent front garden. Other differences were the location of the staircase (Harrison Road between front and back room; Haden street the stars went up from the kitchen), also the Harrison Road house had an attic so could be classed as 3 bedroomed.
  7. To be honest I found him very annoying, but wouldn't have dreamt of making a complaint. I saw lots of people, mostly those, I think, who bought from him who seemed to have a good rapport and banter with him. I am one of those who won't now buy the Big Issue - reasons = I don't think it now fulfils the original vision of being a temporary "leg-up" for people trying to turn round their lives. I used to work at the Cathedral Breakfast and would rather follow the advice of Alan, its Church Army founder, not to give directly to a person but to give to a charity supporting vulnerable people. Hence, I give to the YMCA Room Sponsor scheme. To get back to Andy, I go in Waitrose several times a week and always replied "No, thank you" when asked to buy on the way in. He, without fail, asked me again on the way out (I say "No, thank you" and he says something like "have a nice day"). That's it, he is not aggressive, just a bit pushy for my liking, because he must recognise me and know that I never buy. But heigh ho, it's a free country, the fact that he irritates me is my problem, and I think it's because I have a bit of residual guilt that I now almost never buy the Big Issue. By the way, Andy, to his credit ever the eternal optimist, asked me to buy when I passed him outside the Town Hall last Thursday - no problem, but I didn't buy one!
  8. Last Thursday, Andy was selling outside the Town Hall.
  9. You wrote, "Fortunately (yes I know it's gross)," yet thought it acceptable to continue. Decorum? And you a Moderator too!
  10. Too much information! The question is fine, but the detail given, yuk! I really did not enjoy reading that - some things are best kept private!
  11. Yes, and I haven't been able to get R4 Extra since late last night. Anybody any idea what's wrong? Thanks.
  12. There are a few photos of Regent Court on Picture Sheffield.
  13. Dear Love2print, I hope this won't come across as patronising, but your posts have all really impressed me. You are articulate and, in my opinion, very accurate in your views. Friends/ connections in life make a huge difference to most people's outlook and aspirations, especially children. I know the leadership team at Steel City Schools Consortium are working very hard to improve results at Mansel and parents like yourself have a lot to contribute. Have you considered trying to get together with other parents to see what you can all do to help the school. Some won't be interested (at first), but great oaks from little acorns grow! Your children are very fortunate to have such a caring, clued-up mum and I'm sure they will do well.
  14. Hear! Hear! There is a pattern. Labour wrecks the economy. The Tories repair it but become unpopular in doing so. Labour is re-elected and wrecks it all over again. It is time to break this pattern. Labour = a hand out Conservative = a hand up The UK economy is on the up at the moment, let's keep it this way. Remember Mr Micawber's wise words.
  15. That's my experience too. On the 120 Fulwood route, a few weeks ago, I waited 40 minutes + for a bus. I saw three buses go up to the terminus, but none came down for ages. Eventually, two buses came - one straight after the other, they then took it in turns to stop at alternate stops to pick up passengers. When I had got on the bus, I had (politely) asked the driver, why we had had to wait so long for a bus. He didn't answer at first, so I asked again and got the surly reply, "I'm on time". Some of the First drivers are okay, but in my experience, a lot of them are miserable, unfriendly and unhelpful. Yesterday, I got a Stagecoach 83A and that driver was cheery, polite and couldn't have been more helpful when I asked which stop was best for Endcliffe Park Cafe.
  16. A convenience store is marginally better than the building becoming a derelict eyesore, but the road is extremely narrow and, in my opinion, not suitable to cope with any increase in traffic.
  17. LoxleyS6, thank you for taking the trouble to post all the above information. I have relatives buried in Loxley and when I last went up to try to find the grave, I gave up in despair, because it was impossible to find any way through the wilderness. I will write to Hague Plant; let's hope they do the decent thing and reinstate the path(s).
  18. Thanks, for the information, but the family who I am looking for are not related to the person you suggested.
  19. Maybe the former Abbeydale Girls' Grammar School building?
  20. Martin Brooks have done a lot of work for me and they are excellent for all roofing work - I've had a new flat roof on my kitchen extension, lead replaced on a bay window and a whole new tiled roof on the house; they are very professional and do a top class job. I used Dalton's a couple of times some years ago for repair work to ridge tiles and a chimney, but the standard of work was not so good.
  21. Ages ago, but they might still do it, I got some green household soap from the main Boots store (their own brand) in Sheffield city centre. Apart from not having the baby logo stamped on it, it was indistinguishable from Fairy.
