  2. Yes, there is a Magic Money Tree! That's the title of the next public talk by Positive Money Sheffield, to be given on Monday 10th July. •Where does money come from? •What do banks really do? •What myths surround money, austerity and public debt? During the general election campaign, both Theresa May and Amber Rudd asserted that there isn’t a magic money tree. We will explore whether this is actually the case, and look a bit deeper at the question "where will 'they' get the money from?". Illustrated talk given by Peter Verity, including a couple of recent Positive Money videos, and followed by an opportunity to discuss the issues raised. Where and when Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James St, Sheffield S1 2EW. What does the London-based team do? What leading figures/media/organisations has it already reached and impacted? Where do we see things heading? Insider Graham Hodgson has carried out significant work as a volunteer with the Positive Money team, and is well placed to fill us in on the story of this movement’s operation, ethos and mushrooming influence. The talk will be followed by an opportunity for questions and a short discussion. 8. "Banking on Land vs Prosperity". This film and talk explores how taxing wealth (in the form of land) rather than income could lead to a much more equitable economy. Land Value Tax (LVT) has a tradition going back to the 19th century, and has, at various times, been supported by Green, Labour and Liberal parties. Come and find out what it's all about! Presented by Yoni Higgsmith, an LVT activist and filmmaker, and active officer for the Labour Land Campaign and Professional Land Reform Group. 9. Positive Money is a campaign to create a money and banking system that works for society, and not against it. We think that •Money should be created free of debt •Money should only be created through a democratic and transparent body working in the public interest •Money should come into the real (non-financial) economy before it reaches financial markets and property bubbles •Banks should not be allowed to create money How does this fit in with other campaigns for social justice - such as local currencies, LETS, nationalised banks, cooperatives? Please come to this meeting and bring your thoughts on these questions. There will be plenty of time for discussion. Talk and discussion, led by Dermot Smyth - everyone welcome! Quaker Meeting House, St James St, Sheffield S1 2EW 7:30-9:00pm Mon 29th Feb. We ask for a donation (suggested £3) to cover costs. http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield
  10. This talk is given by Positive Money, a campaign to create a money and banking system that works FOR society and not against it. Our monthly meetups are for everyone interested in how our money system works and how it could be changed to be constructive and socially beneficial. In our first talk of 2016, Mike Black will explain how private banks create the nation's money supply "out of thin air", at the same time creating mountains of unsustainable debt. It will be a 'back to basics' session, so if the ideas are new to you, or if you feel you need a refresher, this one is especially for you. Where and when? Quaker Meeting House, St James St, Sheffield S1 2EW. Monday 25th Jan 7:30-9:00pm. We ask for a voluntary donation (suggested £3) to cover costs http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield
  11. Talk by POSITIVE MONEY, a campaign to create a money and banking system that works FOR society and not against it. Local public banks (or municipal banks) are like credit unions but they have a banking licence - they are publically owned and the profits go to help society. Public banking is 40% of banking in Germany and 25% of banking worldwide, but it is almost non-existent in the UK. In Germany there are public banks at local, regional and national level. All these banks are owned by the relevant governments and their profits go to help society. This has resulted in a very vibrant small and medium business sector - can we learn from their example? Quaker Meeting House S1 2EW 7:30-9:00pm Mon 30th Nov. All welcome, we ask for a donation (suggested £3) to cover costs. http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield
  12. ALTERNATIVES TO AUSTERITY Public talk and discussion, hosted by Positive Money. Our next event is on Monday 26th October, and will be a talk by Adrian Cruden, former Green Party campaigns manager for Yorkshire and Humber region, and Parliamentary candidate for Dewsbury. Austerity is a political choice not an economic necessity, so what are the alternatives? For decades, western governments have worked to the ideal of Margaret Thatcher's "housewife's shopping basket" analogy. That might make sense for an individual or a household, but maybe the opposite is true for a national or international economy. •how do we make fair and sustainable use of our world's resources? •what should be the role of politics in the economy? •and what alternatives are there that can deliver sustained prosperity for all without busting the planet or destroying our children's future? Quaker Meeting House 7:30-9:00pm Mon 26th October. We ask for a donation (suggested £3) to cover costs. Positive Money is a campaign to create a money and banking system that works for society, and not against it. http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield Report Post
  13. Few people ask the question “where does money come from?”. The surprising answer is that 97% of money is created by banks when they make loans. This talk will illustrate how the nation has surrendered its sovereign right to create money to private banks, and how this leads to high levels of private debt, and a transfer of money from the poor to the rich. We will also take a look at Jeremy Corbyn's "People's Quantitative Easing" proposals. Public talk given by Peter Verity, followed by discussion. Monday 28th September 7:30pm at the Quaker Meeting House (10 St James St, Sheffield S1 2EW). Positive Money is a campaign to create a money and banking system that works FOR society and not AGAINST it. Our monthly talks provide an open and inclusive space for our supporters to meet like-minded people in a friendly environment and to debate questions around the money system. All welcome! We ask for donations (suggested £3) to cover costs http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield
  14. We know that banking is broken and that our money system needs to be reformed, but there's more to it than the eye can see. How does the hidden world of derivatives, casino banking and 'shadow' banking work, and what threats does it pose? Public talk and discussion, Monday 27th July 7:30pm at the Quaker Meeting House (10 St James St, Sheffield S1 2EW).
  15. SEVEN DEADLY INNOCENT FRAUDS OF ECONOMIC POLICY Public talk and discussion, hosted by Positive Money. Quaker Meeting House 7:30pm Mon 29th June. We ask for a donation (suggested £3) to cover costs. Taxation, inflation, deficit, public debt - are we being told the truth or is the wool being pulled over our eyes? Faced with a further 5 years of public spending cuts, is our monetary system failing us, and can it be reformed? In this talk, Nirvana Bloor will debunk some myths of current economic policy, and will explain the arguments for sovereign control of the money supply. "The Seven Deadly Innocent Frauds of Economic Policy" is the title of a book by Warren Mosler, a proponent of post-Keynesian Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). Innocent because they reflect conventional wisdom, but deadly because they are destructive and are by far the greatest obstacles to national prosperity. Positive Money is a campaign to create a money and banking system that works for society, and not against it. http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoneySheffield
