Its the other way around Brown knew it but couldn't admit it. We need these people to do what our own workers will not entertain, back in the day it was bus drivers and hospital staff that we needed, they came because the chance of work was there. If the economic/hospitality sector of London was only allowed to employ anglo saxons the City would implode. People come here for work and a better life. Some of our lot would not dream of going South to work in a Hotel or Restaurant. But hey lets blame the Polish.

No I don't. Immigrants need to eat and keep warm too, the myth that mass immigration leads to lower wages is laughable. Its the system that is wrong, our tax and benefits system is the most complicated in the world. Believe me in a recession most of the migrants will go back and when the 'green shoots' are showing another wave will return. If the youth of today is lazy, workshy and innumerate then previous generations need to take the hit. It must be our fault, people are not born workshy its our fault for not giving them the work ethic. The wages on offer to today's youngsters are a disgrace. In 1982 I took home £110 a week in the final year of my apprenticeship. Something has gone awry. We are now in a situation where people go out to work and are deemed not to earn enough to live on, they pay tax and NI but still need to claim this allowance or another. Someone needs to administer this, so we have jobs in the public sector that are there to hand out money to other public sector workers. It is madness. If employers paid a proper wage then we would have no need to subsidise their staff with government (ie taxes) money. Who benefits from all this? The private sector who pay low wages, get the taxpayer to subsidise them, make a profit and then turn around and tell us that because they are registered in a small town in Luxembourg that they don't have to pay any corporation tax. The system needs to be redesigned, not fixed. The Country is going bust and its got a lot more to do with capitalism in the private sector and soviet style collectivism in the public service than it has to do with immigration. Wake up.

Just been on holiday and ended up reading sue johnson's (sheila grant) autobiography, in it she says she worked with Sean Bean on something or other and said that he was a massive wednesday fan. Mind you she also stated that the hillsborough disaster happened at a Liverpool, wednesday league game.

I've often thought that the argument about the oldest football club, ie Sheffield FC is a little facile. Who did they play their fist match against? It had to be the 2 oldest teams to actually play a game.

I think a lot of you make valid points. The tax take on a pibnt is much the same as it was in 1980, but the price has gone up, mainly through the greed of the pubco's. In Dewsbury the average price of a pint is £2.20, in nearby York its £4.50. That is down to supply and demand and ripping off tourists. Youngsters today have such a large choice of how to spend their time and money and the pub is getting lower on the list of things to do. Succesive governments have also demonised kids and drinking, wich has led to landlords refusing to serve anyone who appears to be under 25. If today's youth do not frequent the local pub then it will eventually close, as the customers die off. From this and a few other posts I reckon I must know you old tup. My first pint in the Hares would have been as a 16 year old in 1977. From 84 ish the Hares became my local, until at least 97. Whenever I get back to Rotherham I always try and visit the Masons/Hares and coach. I saw blood in the Hares on more than one occasion. It went from being known as 'the lesbian bus drivers' pub to a must be part of the town circuit.

Hey, My Mum was born in Canklow, before they moved up in the world to East Herringthorpe. Some of my best mates were born in Canklow, they always thought they were stigmatised. I agree with another poster, there are some pretty bad parts of Sheffield. As for Eastwood, the Shakey and Brittania were still good pubs only 20 years ago. I was there to see the flats built and knew, even as a kid that knocking down terraced houses to build that crap was the wrong way to go. Sorry, but a full 45 years later, the folly of St Anns flats still rankles. Since the 70's Rotherham council have turned a decent town into a degree level lesson in how not to do urban planning.

Back in the day, what a mix it was, Irish, Polish, Kashmiri. I even remember a family of scousers, they were naughty.

I used to go to every place mentioned on this thread, but am struggling to remember much about Cresta's. I remember the name but not where it was. Wellgate in particular was a buzzing place for many years. Start at the Clifton, Masons arms, Albion Rd Club, Hare and Hounds, Mailcoach, Clever and then into town. I've just realised I must have been a heavy drinker.....

I read this because I was born and dragged up in Eastwood (well St anns anyway). I'm pretty sure it was in Rotherham then so I suspect it still is. This is really lazy reporting, but what really astounds me is that the theft of 5 mobile phones every day in a City the size of Sheffield should constitute a news story.

I suggest you read and understand what's being said before replying. I did not castigate people who wear poppies, I believe that everyone should be able to make their own mind up. You have no idea of my politics, if I have a military background or even if I wear a poppy or not.

Would anyone be interested in joining up to approach waterstones/smiths etc, with some sort of promotion of local authors? What do you think?
