  1. Hi My name is Roger Tufft, I am related distantly to the Gosneys I realise there has been no activity here for 4 years, but, if anyone wants to share some knowledge please respond
  2. Hi Susie, Do you remember my father Gerald Tufft who ran E. Tufft & Son, the drapers at 20 Middlewood Road. Roger
  3. yes, good one ...........I crowed too early !!!! R
  4. He sure did, and, looking back, he was a damn good teacher, but to an 11 year old facing that red face staring at you and calling you a "great soft thing" I found terrifying. I agree Monty was a sadist Now Griff, I had a lot of time for. I think , until you were taught by him his presence was daunting, but in class he could be fun wit his war stories. He was a bighead, but I liked him, he had a real sense of humour and a man`s man. When were you there ....me...58 - 65
  5. No one to compare with Killer Johnson at High Storrs in the 50`s and 60`s Never raised his voice but there was something about him that terrified you. Having said that, his record of getting passes in history was unsurpassed. One Christmas the class decided to buy presents for the masters, a kipper for Mr. Herring etc. Killer had been observed always sucking mints ans we bought a packet of humbugs. For a brief unguarded second we saw his human side as he was quite touched by this and explained to us he was chewing to give up smoking
  6. My cousin , by marriage, Christopher Jubb lives in Ecclesall. He had a brother called Jonathan I believe ..............age c. 60
  7. Good one Phil, my Mum remembers the name but not what they were. My Dad parked his car up this alleyway, behind the shop. Every night he would carry the day`s takings in a briefcase up here to the car, in winter it was pitch black. he was never mugged once. Sign of the times eh! I think the back of the Kinema was in this yard too. Many a time I would stand out front when an `A` film was on and ask a someone to take me in, Oh Boy ! would you do that these days !
  8. you got it ...wonder if they still do that again, apologies if already covered, but, in the little alleyway (arch) that led to the rear of 20/22, there was a firm ..." Justices" , I think . Who were they ? Roger
  9. Hi Harvey, Drawn a blank at Harry Brindley. My Mum seems to rememeber more about the shops than the residents. She told me she took me to see the Misses Kay when I was baby wrapped in a sparkling white shawl. Now, the sisters spent all early morning sorting out the newspapers, and by 10 a.m. their hands were as black as Harry Belefonte`s, my mothers cringes now, at the memory of Clarice saying " Oh isn`t he lovely, let me hold him "................
  10. Hello Bazza Yes I remember Herretts now was opposite to my Dad`s shop, a little to the left. I remember looking across from our shop around Christmas and the queues outside Kelseys were horrendous. Interesting you worked at Wiggies. I worked at Woolworths in 1964 when I was at school, filling shelves up and crushing cardboard boxes upstairs, boring work but the shop girls were fun. I was filling a shelf one day dressed in my Ernest Garnett lookalike overall when a large woman with an even larger hat said to me " excuse me young man " " Do you know where I can get felt " .............
  11. stand by ....................I`ll ask her on Monday Roger
  12. yes, the pike was lower down. I have not read all 18 pages here, but, if there are any unanswered questions on these shops, my mothers memory is still good at 98 and it goes back 80 years !! She remembers all the shops, in order, the people who ran them. For example, Chapmans the butchers, at about no. 26. Mr Chapman had not been seen for a few days and when my Dad and the police broke in he was hanging on a meat hook in the cellar, they had to cut him down, but, too late. A little scruffy kid with his cap all askew was a regular at my Dad`s shop with his mother who kept telling him he had to be polite to the mester ....that was Roy Hattersley. Years ago, all the shops were open until 9 p.m. , and 10 p.m. on saturdays. People would have their tea, then go shopping ( no tele !! )
  13. Reminiscences on Ernest Garnett, hairdresser I used to be sent to him clutching my shilling for a short back and sides in the 50`s. The stuffed pike always remains in the memory, and the budgie in the cage. He always placed a plank over the arms of his chair for the kids so they would be higher, and always wore that brown overall. He was quite gruff and monosyllabic as I recall. I remember some of the conversations with his regulars. One day the budgie cage was empty " Where`s t budgie Ernie " "Wednesday lost Satdy .......buggered it .............." " See that sitter Ellis missed Satdy Ernie " " Aye .......great streak a whitewesh ............"
  14. Hello all, I am Roger, Ian`s brother. Well, Cheetham, call yourself a Wednesdayite. Even I, a dyed in the wool Blade, managed the final in 66. Will you be going to the playoffs this year ? I have memories to share later, but, meanwhile, does anyone remember Herretts Carpets. I was at School with Andy Herrett in 58` Great site. The mention of the Misses Kaye, made me shudder Roger
