  1. I would suggest that you do the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce. The course requires you to work/ volunteer at an educational setting for a minimum of one day a week and this gives you the 1 term work experience that most employers will require when you start applying for jobs at nurseries. The course is definately recognised (the one I am on is accredited by city & guilds) and you may even be able to get funding for it if you or your partner get tax credits. Hope this helps
  2. I am a third year university student studying BA History at Sheffield Hallam University. As part of my final assessment I am required to write a dissertation on any subject that is valid as a historical topic. I have chosen to write a dissertation on the influence of race and gender on the experience of immigrants who moved to Sheffield between 1960 and 1980. The problem that I am having is that I don't know of any books on the subject and my dissertation will therefore heavily rely on interviewing immigrants who moved to Sheffield between 1960 and 1980. The purpose of my post is to get as many volunteers as possible who are willing to be interviewed about their experiences as immigrants in Sheffield between 1960 and 1980. If you are an immigrant who moved to Sheffield between 1960 and 1980 and are interested in taking part, please register your interest by replying to this message with your name and contact details (i don't need phone numbers, home address or e-mail address will do). If you prefer, you can post me a private message. If you know of anyone who is an immigrant who moved to Sheffield between 1960 and 1980, could you please pass this message onto them.
  3. Hi Bernie M. When I did my theory test (they had only just started doing hazard perception) I found that the clips used in the test differed greatly from the clips on the CD Rom things. my tip would be to click at least 6 or 7 times for the same hazard. As you may know, you are only marked on one hazard (the developing hazard) even though there are hazards scattered all over the clip. I would suggest that you click, pause for one second and then repeat as many times as you feel that you need to. I used this method and passed my test even though I lost marks on 2 clips for going mad with the clicking. Hope that I have been of some help. Let me know how you get on.
  4. I think that people have got the wrong idea about what an illegal immigrant actually is and this is apparent in this discussion. There are 2 different types of illegal immigrants 1.someone who enters the country by dodging port controls 2. someone who entered the country in the right way and with a legitimate reason, who's visa has now run out and has not gone back to their country of origin. If we are talking about illegal immigrants type 1 we are only talking about a very small number of illegal immigrants but if we are talking about illegal immigrants type 2 we are talking in millions. I work in the Home Office in the Immigration department and believe that not enough is being done to sort out the problem of illegal immigration. People who are living in this country illegally are supposed to be removed and deported back to their own countries (in theory) but in practice this is more difficullt as illegal immigrants are almost invisible as they do not have any status. This means that they can do as they please since they have no status. Illegal immigrants only get caught out when they apply for further leave and even this is difficult because there is only one removals team in the whole of the UK. To sort out the problem of illegal immoigrants I think that the government should redefine what an illegal immigrant actually is. Secondly the government should be more open about the immigration system and not keep people in the dark about how people are getting into the country because hopefully by doing this the government can show that illegal immigrants are not all bad.
  5. Oops! looks like i've just killed off a very interesting thread
  6. I wasn't able to go to the meeting arranged by the council on the 10th of April. Can anyone tell me what was discussed and what the council has decided.
  7. i apologise abot that last comment. i'd like to withdraw it and don't want any more posts giving retaliation!!!!! I'm just so angry cuz i don't know whether i'm coming or going. i've already got stress with doing my degree and all that and i don't think that i will be able to take any more. i just wish that the council told us directly rather than keeping us residents in the dark about what it wants to do. personally, i have to reapply for my fees to be paid by my local council as well as re-enrol for the next academic year. i can't actually do this until i know exactly what is happening and it will probably mean that i will have to pay the 1,500 uni fees myself as i can't disclose my address. what kind of problems will the move by the council cause you and is it really worth all that the council says it is? p.s why does everyone automatically assume that i'm a he just cuz i haven't mentioned anywhere that i am female
  8. I got a letter through the post last week from fir vale forum and apparently the final decision on whether to knock the houses down or to keep them is in May.The council may have asked our opinions but i'm sure that it won't budge from its original decision to knock down our houses regardless of the fact that 300 signatures were on a petition handed to the council last month and half of the people didn't even live in the area. They just felt sorry for the fact that residents were being chucked out of their own homes
  9. Did anyone read the star on 3/02/05. apparently the council wants to take Mainline off the streets if it doesn't improve its services and instead replace it with other companies. can it do this? i thought that the first company was private, wasn't it? If Mainline goes the only company that will be left will be Yorkshire Terrior, which operates a low frequency service and which does not go to all parts of Sheffield. Do people really want this?
  10. I apparently got a letter through the post today from the Sheffield city council claiming that the whole project is estimated to take about 10 years and that they have still not finalised the plans for demolition. Why can't the council be definite about its plans or are they just trying to scare the living daylights out of us local residents? my house needs doing up and theres no point in me rennovating it if in a few years time the council is going to bring it to the ground. Even the options available for the people whose houses are going to be knocked down are so confusing that I don't think anyone understands what is going to happen after the houses in the area are demolished. Another grievance that I have is that the council claims that everyone- yes everyone- in the area to be knocked down approves of the plan. Where is the evidence? As far as I am concerned everyone that I know is against it. Just go down Popple Street and look in everyones window. There was a letter in the star yesterday from a member of the green party who also disagrees with the plans for the Firvale area. Is there any way that we could force the council into backing down? Come on people we really need someone who knows what is really happening to write in
  11. Do you even live in the area that I am talking about?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. I have got very conservative taste and i drive a Nissan Sunny. I don't think that this reflects my personality because it was the only car I could afford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Has anyone heard of the councils plans to demolish houses on Robey street, Popple Street and the Wensley estate in order to build new semi-deatched housing with garages on them? I am a resident on Robey Street and I think that this plan is wrong because I have lived in the area all my life and demolishing the whole area to re-build would mean that I am forced into a council house, simply because I am a low wage earner. Also the council did not involve the residents in the consultation stage. I did not even know of the plan until one day I saw a letter lying on my doorstep, which said that the council had made a plan to demolish the area and that there was large support among the people who lived in the area. What ********!!!!!!!!!! I have lived all my life on Robey Street and I have very fond memories of the place. why is the council doing this? Perhaps because of racism. it is a well-known fact that the area about to be demolished has a large population of ethnic (Me being one of them) and wherever there are ethnics there is a perception that there is a high level of crime. Why? The council tells us that it wants to regenerating the area to lessen the tendancies of crime but i believe that they are just doing it to wind up the ethnics. To show the ethnics that the council can be racist legitimatelly. What does anyone else think? (by the way I am only 19 but I passionate about serious things like this and I am not into folly)
