  1. I just thought I would give this posting another airing a year on from when I first wrote it. It may not get any response but maybe one person may give it a try. It's really just a comment on the fact that you don't need to go to a gym and pay for a membership in order to get fit. There is so much information out there on the internet to look at regarding gymless training that if you want to get fit you can do it in the comfort of your own home if you feel too self conscious to go to a gym. Give it a try.
  2. Years ago I bought an ex company mondeo with 192k on the clock. It had full service history, original engine and gearbox and was only a 1.6 engine. It sounded fantastic and the gearchange was better than a friends 1.6 escort with just 26,000 miles on it. It seems to me to be down to the style of driving the car is subjected to. Before I bought my Subaru 10 years ago, I looked around for any information on reliability and found some in the states which were getting close to half a million miles on them. That's why I bought it and am still running it now, 2.5 legacy saloon with 220,000 miles on the clock. Original engine and gearbox, just normal service items replaced. As I'm not into having a new or nearly new car, I intend to keep it until it becomes too unreliable and expensive to run.
  3. I didn't leave a word out dude! If you get used to writing in a particular manner how are you going to correct yourself when the time calls for it? It's just a shame that text spelling has made it's way into all forms of writing even when the number of characters is not an issue. ---------- Post added 03-02-2014 at 22:09 ---------- That last post was aimed at onewheeldave...is your favourite song ' hey dude'?
  4. See how just asking a question brings about a really good solution. Mjw47 brings up a very good answer with the peace corps style scheme. Maybe when the young people came back from an experience like that they would have a new found respect for themselves and those around them even if they had no work here to begin with.
  5. I read so many posts on here about people who cancel contracts with various companies only to have payments continue to be taken out as direct debit payments. They then have to chase these companies for refunds which are promised during telephone calls but never arrive back in their bank accounts. When you cancel a contract with a company I advise you to also contact your bank and cancel the direct debit instruction after the last payment has been made. If you do not do this your direct debit with that company will remain active which means any error on their part will result in payment still being collected from you. When you cancel the instruction with the bank no more money will be paid if the company makes a request for a payment. Remember, it is your money and your account.....take control of it.
  6. So many posts and so many spelling and grammar mistakes. I don't want to be a nazi about it but if you can't grasp that basic or check before you submit it, what hope do you have if you put in a job application with similar mistakes?
  7. I just wondered if anyone on here had any comments to pass on the re-introduction of national service. I was chatting to some old guys who had done national service years ago and they were relaying stories of how they went in as boys and came out as men. All the usual sort of things guys like this say about national service. I wondered if any of this would translate to society today. There are lots of teenagers out of work, not in education or training, some of whom are getting into trouble and have little respect for anyone around them. It would seem to be a good idea to draft into national service all the teens who are not bound for university or on vocational training courses and give them a good old fashioned dose of military style training. Would it teach them respect for themselves and others around them or just produce fitter, better trained thugs two years down the line?
  8. If parking is an issue then it's up to the local residents to lobby the council for a solution. Get in touch with a local MP or councillor and make the complaint. I don't see why in these situations the verges canot be made into paarking bays, it would cut down on future maintainence of verges. If the residents don't want that ask for raised kerbs to stop the verge being destroyed. Either way, the only way to get a solution is to contact the council. I hate to see verges churned up to a mudbath but I also hate cars blocking footpaths too. If you can't park properly then find somewhere you can even if that means walking. I know that is a tall order for some drivers, walking. I can drive but I can also walk, I sometimes think that some car drivers would like all high street shops to become drive thru so that they don't have to ever get out of the car.
  9. Prior to these ladies knocking on their doors the old guys in the story only had one use for Viagra.....to stop them rolling out of bed at night!!
  10. We are not the worlds nurse maid. We should only give what we can afford to after we have sorted out our own problems and got our society in some sort of order. It's true that we shouldn't be giving vast sums of money overseas when we are being told that there is no money for this or that here. Regardless of the situation we should still only give what we can afford. It's a bit like giving your wages to charity and then telling your mortgage company that you can't make this months payment. What would they say? Or worse still....stop your tv license payments and tell them you sent that money to Syria to help. Would they say ok, no problem?
  11. Do bus drivers still carry an unpaid fares slip like they did years ago? If you couldn't pay you could ask for an unpaid fares slip, fill in your details and pay later. If they don't have change they should offer this as an option. But I bet they don't want to wait for their money from you like they expect you to. The unpaid fare slip wasn't very well known about or advertised but I think it had some to do with it being a public service vehicle and you had the right to travel if you needed to so the option was there if you didn't have the fare. Erm....scratch that....bus companies don't offer a public service anymore! Should have known.
  12. Why not try to get the money owed to you from one account refunded. They cannot withhold money they owe you. In the meantime, delay the debt collectors by only responding in writing and telling them to allow you 21 days to respond to each of their letters and then maybe you will have your refund before the debt collectors respond to you. Treat each bill as a separate one as they are doing. Could be easier than trying to get some numpty on the phone to transfer so much money over to another account and process a refund for the difference.
  13. The problem I have with religion stems from the R.E classes ar school and having to listen to the stories of how different characters performed these amazing feats like walking on water, parting a sea, talking to burning bushes and even just talking to god or having god talk to them. Since that time there have been no miracles reliably witnessed and documented to prove the existence of a higher power known as a god. If I were to have a firm belief in the norse gods I would be considered an idiot. However, there is just as much evidence to support their existence as there is to support that of god or allah. I just don't get how so many people can believe so fully in something that has no real evidence of it's existence. Religion really is the opium of the people. A method which the few can control the many. Maybe it was fine years ago when education was limited and the masses needed controlling but now with good education, surely people can control themselves and see that religious writings are pure fantasy.
  14. Religion again. It is a shame that all religions were formed thousands of years ago. All religious writings are the biggest works of fantasy ever. Why can't we all just get along? Each country to their own area, trading with others in a civilized manner with no territorial ambitions. A bit utopian, but a damn site better than what is happening now.
  15. Until recently I owned a 'new' ish build house. Very early 80's with a lot of internal walls being very thin and some stud and plasterboard. Ok to look at but not great to live in as you could hear everything all around the house. The only upside was that it was detached so no neighbour noise. I now live in a much older, solidly built house that has brick walls throughout and just 'feels' more solid. I think it will certainly be here in a hundred years time..although I won't be!
  16. Is that why some phone makers are providing waterproof models now?
  17. Why is there any stigma attached to it at all? The guy could just be the type to not compromise in a relationship and do what he wants to do when he wants to do it. Or maybe he has his own reasons for staying single. After the marriage I had I know for a fact I will remain single for the foreseeable future. People can always assume the sexual weido scenario. I think that says more about them than the person they are labelling.
  18. I read an interesting article the other day but I'm damned if I can find it again. The idea put forward by the author was that if being gay or lesbian is a natural thing i.e the individual knew from an early age that they were gay or lesbian, is it not right to assume that being homophobic could be the same? Instead of being a learned response could it be a natural inbuilt feeling? For the record I would just like to state that I am not gay and neither do I have any ill feeling towards the gay or lesbian community. I just thought it was an interesting viewpoint on the subject.
  19. It would appear that 'charmer' would give his shallow girl the best 30 seconds she's ever had!!
  20. Well this year I shall be having a nice stroll along the coast path in the morning, nipping to the local for my Xmas dinner and then lounging in front of the tv all afternoon with a few cheeky whiskies with my new neighbour here on the south coast. Triffic!
  21. How can these people be obese and on benefits? Surely you can't buy enough food to remain large on benefits. If you can there is something wrong somewhere. I think the main thing obese people need to exercise is restraint. ---------- Post added 25-11-2013 at 14:10 ---------- Oh and Mr Bloom, fat does equal quite lazy in most cases. You don't see many 25 stone 5k,10k or marathon runners!
  22. German shepherds and rottwielers can be hairy beasties though, so unless you want to be constantly vacuuming your house I'd go for a ridgeback. Short hair, good with family and good guards. If they can chase down and keep lions at bay till the hunters arrived, they can deal with some little Herbert trying to get in your house!
  23. How can speaking out against the terror that Muslim extremists cause be classed as racist? The Muslim faith will accept anyone who converts regardless of the colour of their skin. As far as I am aware a racist is someone who is prejudiced towards others based on skin colour. Muslims are white, black, Arabic, Asian etc so speaking out against Muslims is simply speaking out against a religious group of people. Nothing racist there at all. I have also noticed that although a few Muslims do speak out and say they do not support the actions of the terrorists, no one seems to pick up the phone and inform the police of where these terror cells are. By their inaction they are supporting them silently. So yes, ban Islam, it is outdated and has no place in modern society. Either that or lets bring back the christian crusades, fight fire with fire. An outdated solution to an outdated problem. Put all non believers to the sword like they used to, convert or die. Well, what's good for the Muslim goose is good for the Christian gander.
  24. Years ago I plucked up the courage to talk to a girl in a bar. The evening went great. At the end of the evening I asked if she wanted to come back to my place, she said she was sorry she couldn't as she was on her menstrual cycle. I said that's ok, I've got my scooter, you can follow me.........
