  1. I lived in Page Hall/Fir vale 1950 - 1972.. My paper round was first at Barstows on Ellerton Rd, then later I was in the shop while he and his "companion" delivered papers round Northern Gen. ( "10 Park Drive and a Star love"). Moved when the shop went to Page Hall, near the old fashioned tobacconist. Went to Hucklow Rd school and St Cuthbert's.. spent half my life there.. Sunday School, Brownies, Whit sings round NGH , tea and games in church hall after races in Longley Park. Still have the wool pattern from the Wool shop at Fir vale - my first knitting - a Mary Quant pattern. Lots of Page Hall memories too.. liberty bodices from the very grand Co-op Drapers ( then Pope's) with the tube for the money going back to the cashier; everything in beautiful wooden drawers and glass fronted cabinets...; lusting after Rimmel lipsticks at Co-op chemist on corner of Little Bolsover (everything was 1/6d); hiding under the seat at the nasty Queen with the apple in Snow White at the cinema on Idsworth; glass fronted biccie tins at McGregors and also at Mr Picks (strange name?) grocers halfway up the other bit of Bolsover on the corner.; the butcher's on Bolsover, halfway up - my mum told me not to sit on the butcher's boy's knee on the "road trip" to the seaside which we had every year.. I didn't know why... .. the mystery of Page Hall with its private large entrance, a no go.... then it was an orphanage.. (hints of kids' story books where all orphans were mistreated.)... . going "up the bank" on Cammell Road, lots of rose bay willow herb, and over to Firth Park library to get books, (oh joy) or see film shows at night.. wandering to Wincobank to pick blackberries.. .. a friend in brownies, - her bro had drowned in a brick pit there.. danger and mystery everywhere.. enough for now.. have some pics from then..
  2. Hi Muscles.. yes.. Theatre Vanguard and Pegasus theatre both names for youth work by the good ld Playhouse.. still have some of their programmes.. the magic of live theatre.. I can still see some of the young company before my eyes..it would be good to compile a further history of the place before we all pop our clogs ( clogs NOT any more, thank goodness) There are some docs on record from the "Sheffield Educational Settlement there founded by Arnold Freeman to benefit the working population there.. not sure how it all went down with them??! Which group were you in.?
  3. I went once or twice to this theatre in '67 or so with Pegasus theatre group gang ( youth theatre group attached to Playhouse) - recall walking there from town past rubble of demolished back to backs.. I have a copy of a play by Arnold Freeman. Saint Paul. Also recall dressing up in an old gold/green long velvet dress from there, but I didn't take any parts in plays there. I think it was where the old Housing office/ carpark is on Shipton St.
  4. Hi Pics attached of two of my classes: one is 1957, top infants, I think, and one is 1961 (Junior 4) with Mrs Shaw as teacher. I know many of the names of those in the photos, esp. the girls, but don't feel it's fair to name them without permission. Or rather NOT attached, sorry... they are on my desktop. I don't know how to attach them on this site... help?
  5. Hi - I was at Hucklow 55 -61, same class as Coddy, Alan McKenna, Michael simpkins etc all mentioned above...my name is /was Judith. Went to Abbeydale fter we were mentally "whipped" to get through the 11 plus.. I must post up the class photo ... I just still know/have bumped into only 3 folks from my classes there.. Moira G, Lynn S, Margaret S. I never realised at the time how close to WW2 we had been.. strange really..random remark!!!
  6. My dear brother Peter is at far left on front row, x-legged. He died at 50, but lived on Vickers Rd all his life. I also recognise the girl top row 4th from left - Elizabeth S. The photo is hard to see because of the Photobucket strap. I also have a photo of my class Junior 4 in 1961 somewhere in the house - will post when I can. I also remember the names of most folks in my class still, but don't feel it;s fair to post their names somehow without their permssion.. During Lockdown I found my nightdress case I made in Miss Toes' class c. 1959 - still looks like new! - I was peeved cos I had to undo the embroidery as my tied off ends weren't neat enough.!
  7. Hi Forum crafty folks Just like to say how wonderful this shop is at 58Bellhouse Road. I had problems sourcing a particular wool - googled Sheffield wool shops and rang wonderful Marilyn and she had it. They've been there 80 years! - started by her grandfather in 1938. Loads of stock, not the specialist and expensive yarns, I would say, but all the same... and she is so helpful. So njice to think it;s still going after surviving dips in knitting interest over the years. She says her furthest customer had come from Sweden, was taking some wool to Cinciatti, then calling in agin on the way home to Sweden. Ppeople find her from all over the country. Please support her and say hello.
  8. Hello Scout archivist Please does "Scouts" include Cubs too?
  9. I was at Hucklow 1955 -61. ( lat 2 years in Mrs Shaw's class.) Mr Sisk was very scary and his torture scars and direct manner made him seem larger than life, but I recall him teaching us to recite RL Stevenson,s lovely poem From A Railway Carriage over and over again very dramatically until we could do it - great teaching! I bumped into him, quite elderly and even more wrinkled, on his motor scoter in the 80s as he lived near me, and he seemed a very nice man. Wish I could have talked to him more about those days. Mrs Shaw (ex Miss Farmer ) could be quite viscious and ruler you at a moment's notice, but she got lots of us through the 11+ and I admit I was later grateful for that, ( since I enjoyed my secondary school)very much).. whatever the morality of selective schools and the things we DIDN'T seem to do at at school. She later had a craft shop at the town end of London Road. I was the scorer for the Rounders team and she threatened me with the sack from that job for once talking in class! I can remember lots from those days - lots of skipping; terrible big wax crayons; Time and Tune and the BBC nature programmes where you were allowed to buy the colour programme at end of term for 3d. swimming at Sutherland Road baths, snaking down the road, the front room shop at the top of Ellerton where you cold get a penny Tizer (in a sherry glass?!), yummy scraps from the chippie opposite on a Friday. I myself never had a school din. at Hucklow, always went home, but was fascinated by the comments about school peas like bullets. It seemed that all our teachers had comic names that could be parodied - Cornflake from Cornthwaite, Toes, Carding- Wells etc. Anyway that's enough for now. I only know 2 girls from my class now even though am still in Sheffield and have been continuously.
  10. I have a commemorative Scout mug from 1957, (handle missing) with a rose on it with " 1857 - 1907 - 1957" on it that you can have if you want it for the archive. My husbands father was a Badge officer for the Scouts for many years. I live in Walkley now. Any interest? On the other side of the mug it says "Sutton Coldfield"
  11. Many thanks for your prompt reply, Rob - very helpful. Interesting. It's wonderful that we can enjoy art in the landscape in this way - shame about the thefts, but probably no surprise. At least the figures themselves haven't been lifted.
  12. Hi there Our walking group was doing this part of The Sheffield Way and came across these metal human sculptures in different positions that you mention, near Kimberworth - very nice , all the better for being a surprise - I can't find any reference to them.. does anyone know any more, please?
