  1. I am really concerned about the speed of motorbikes and cars on Rivelin Valley Road especially from Malin Bridge up to the speed camera lower down a Rivelin Valley Road. I have contacted the council twice about asking for a speed camera for the section by the zebra crossing ( just by the fire station) as school children and adults use this section quite a bit including in the evenings when a lot of the speeding happens. I am am considering contacting a local councillor about it and setting up a petition if they are not able to help. I have also contacted the police 101 number and all they said was they can’t do anything without the registration numbers of the speeding vehicles. No one from the police side has offered to minor the problem by patrolling the road during the sunny weekends and summer evenings when it is most dangerous. At some point I think sadly there will be another accident unless a speed camera is put up along this section. Any advice about who would be the best councillor to contact about the Malin Bridge end of Rivelin Valley Road and having a speed camera put in place? Also is anyone interested in getting a petition together if they are not able to help?
  2. Hi there. I'm afraid I've not got very far yet. I need to chase a football development officer up as Wisewood Sports centre are interesting in hosting something for women who want to learn but just want to play for fun. Its a bit mad at the moment but I hope to get on to it after Xmas. I can PM you if I get anything sorted if you like?
  3. cool do you know how much you want to pay at all? St Timothy's Church on Slinn St has had Ceilidh before so I guess their hall is bid enough ...
  4. I would def be interested if they are family friendly. If Burton St is no good there are lots of church halls in Crooks and, Hillsborough which might be good... Were thinking of a partilcualr evening to hold them?
  5. I think so :-) I will keep an eye for a venue
  6. Hi did you have any luck setting one up?
  7. Hi does anyone know of any football training for women? I'm a complete beginner ..
  8. Hi Jervsilum The funding stream they have the money from is from different sources, one of which is government funding specifically for accessible play areas. I think the council have put the cart before the horse and applied for the funding for Rivelin without consulting fully first with families of children with disabilities as to where they would like a wet play area to be, as transport is usually a major factor for children with disabilities accessing these area and the pools are long and thin which means if they get overcrowded children will not be able to get out of the way of each other easily (children who are able bodied run faster on wet play areas than in paddling pools, which is why wet play areas tend to be round or oval to allow for easy exits when they are crowded). When I spoke to the Council I was told they already had £125,000 ear marked for the replacement of the pools pump which will cost approx £150,000. I think the gap of £25,000 they need for the pump is quite small considering they are 80% of the way there and there are quite a few grant givers out there who would probably be able to cover the gap if the council wanted to retain the pools and get a friends of group to apply for the small gap in funding. I think the real issue is they don't want to because of the maintenance costs.
  9. As suspect that if the Council want to save money on the maintenance of the Rivelin pools they are unlikely to bring back any more. The consultation period for what happens to Rivellin paddling pools is really short so I think they want to drive this through, which means families with children families with disabilities with be using a park with very limited parking (I think there will be few disabled parking bays for dropping off but then families will still have to find somewhere else to park) and it has really poor public transport. Transport has got to be top of the list I would have thought for families with children with disabilities wanting to use a wet play area and Hillsborough and Millhouses have good car parks and public transport. Plus I think the shape of the pools at Rivelin - long and narrow is not ideally for a wet play area in terms of how densely packed they might get. Wet play areas tend to be better if they are round or oval not long and narrow, to help manage crowding. I also think if the remaining paddling pool gets too crowded the council will have a good reason to get rid of that one at some point as well. Please get as many people as you can to email the council on [email protected] about their thoughts before the closing date of Monday, otherwise I think its going to be a done deal and Sheffield will miss out on the chance to have a park with no water play area to get one that is accessible.
  10. Hi Smog Thanks for your reply. I think the more people that email the council with request for more information and what their concerns are the better so that whet ever plan they use for a new facility is the best for families with children with disabilities. I think its a shame they have not considered parks with better public transport and parking like Hillsborough and Mill Houses
  11. The Council have got funding to create an accessible wet play area for children. This is a brilliant opportunity to give one of the parks in Sheffield a new, exciting and accessible play. If you would like to let the Council know which park you would like to see have an accessible wet play area please contact them at the following email address or tel number, as the closing date for consultation about the funds they have got to create a wet play area is the 5th March! Please contact the following as your views are really important: Project Officer on 0114 273 4579 or email [email protected] Here are my thoughts but its your opinion that counts: The Council's current plan is to get rid of 2 of the 3 paddling pools in Rivelin Park which has no car park and already has a very well used and busy water play area. In fact its the only park to have paddling pools in the whole of Sheffield. By reducing the pools down to 1 it will create overcrowding in the remaining pools and problems for families with children with disabilities in terms parking, as the park does not have a car park and families with children with disabilities will only have limited number of parking bays to drop off children and they will then have to find parking elsewhere. They are not consulting about where which park to site the wet play area because they want to save money. The Council already has separate funds specifically designated to ensure the pump for the paddling pools is upgraded but I think they want to get rid of the paddling pools because the pools need cleaning and have small cracks filled in each year, before the pools are opened in the spring. With the current plan they will still have to do this with the 1 remaining pool they will leave behind so any savings wont be that much and the remaining pool could become easily overcrowded as all 3 paddling pools are very well used and get very busy in the summer and are fine as they are. I think its really important that a park in Sheffield get a new accessible wet play area, which the Council have funding for, but I think its a shame that they plan to do it at the expense of the only park paddling pool facility in Sheffield. I think they should choose a park which has good parking facilities with toilets that can be made accessible with the funding they have and ideally is near to schools used by children with disabilities.
