  1. I would suggest the prime issue is what would be the cost of fitting handrails. Once you have an estimate then you could go back to the HA and ask them to fit rails. I'm not trying to be critical but do bear in mind that it's the parents responsibility to look after their children.
  2. Many many years ago, I used to walk about 3 miles to and from school, weather permitting. I could have got a bus but decided walking was far more fun than getting on a crowded bus. Neither of my parents could afford a car. I used to live in School Lane, in another town, and, at school opening and closing time traffic was murder, especially cars parking on pavements (which were pretty wide). It sounds like Maryjane does need to take her 3 kids by car, especially if one has special needs. However, I don't think the majority of parents have 3 kids aged 11 or less. If they are 12+, they are old enough to walk to school, and it would probably do them a lot of good.
  3. Unfortunately, and not just in your line, it's a catch 22 situation. I'm a brilliant driver ( ha ha ha) but I don't have HGV experience (and I'm not looking). Employers only want people who have experience, however, if you don't have that experience then how do you get it?
  4. Shogun Are you just an HGV agency or do you cover any driving jobs as some members may be put off when you state HGV. It's no offence to you however I do know some agencies frreqently have jobs come though which are not appertainig to their agengy. Some of your HGV clients may have other, non HGV, vacancies that they wish to fill. On the other hand, I have experienced that some agenclies do not even bother to read your CV. They may scan, interactively, through your CV and pick up some keywords which do not necessarily reflect your skills. EG. You may have been an assistant, or something else, for an HGV company, and someone scanning your CV will find HGV and assume that you are an HGV driver.
  5. That's the million dollar question. The only real solution is to try them all. If ypu have a specific skill, then try those agencies that specialise in that. The easiest way is to submit your CV onto one of the online marketeers as they might cover many agencies. The one I used to use was Jobserve, however that's just an example - not necessary a recommendation. Have you a specific skill or are you just looking for any job that you feel comfortable in doing? As I mentioned in an earlier post, try Sheffieldjobstoday. That does cover a wider area, and just not Sheffield.
  6. Hi Thanks for the info. We had a very enjoyable and rewarding day out. The RSPB guys could not be more helpful.
  7. Has anyone any recommendations on what to get for bird watching? Are binoculars suitable or should a scope be used? Don't really want to get a heavy scope. Ideally we would like to try before we buy. Are there any ornithologists around who would welcome us trying their scopes? Is there a good shop in or near Sheffield?
  8. Have you tried any other of the fitnessunlimited gyms? If you are a member of Ponds Forge then you can use any other of their gyms. Try http://www.fitnessunlimited.co.uk/
  9. Not sure of the current legislation re working at home, however, if you are not doing anything that is likely to upset the neighbours, such as making any unnecessary noise or having lots of visitors then I can't see that there would be any objections.
  10. For a start, you will have to outline what skills you have. Do you have expertise in a specific area? Have you something that you can offer to the general public? There are plenty of opportunities for earning money on the web, but most of these pay pittance.
  11. Join eBay as an affiliate. They have everything you need and you don't need to find items to sell.
  12. Not quite sure what you mean by this comment. There are a lot of very good and honest landlords. There are also a lot of very good tenants, regardless of whether they are working or otherwise. BTW I have had some very good DSS tenants. I know it's illegal, but I'd certainly feel like throwing a tenant out if he did not pay his rent. The property may be on a mortgage and the landlord needs the money to pay that mortgage. Why should anyone live there rent free? Who's gonna pay for any repairs if there is no rental income?
  13. I am really glad that there are some warm people left in Sheffield!!
  14. Just a point of clarification. Are we talking about paved footpaths or public footpaths across fields etc? Paved footpaths may need specialised training etc and special skills which may not necessarily be easy for a non-skilled person to pick up. Also special equipment would be required. If it's the latter, then I'm not sure what maintenance needs to be done, apart from picking up rubbish and repairing any fences etc. Whilst I fully support Brian's offer, it may not be that simple for the council to accept that offer. As Brian is new and has no track record, how is he supposed to get any work, however good his offer is. I though the council were trying to save money, so they should jump at this opportunity.
  15. Regardless of what you did, you should not have left before receiving your bonus, whether you were entitled to it or not.
  16. If you were suspended for gross misconduct then do you deserve a bonus? You admitted you were wrong.
  17. I know you can do it in SAS, as they have a PROC ANOVA. Never used SPSS though.
  18. It might be worth contacting the SAS Institute. They have a UK office in Medmeham, Bucks and I think they have special offers for not-for-profit organisations.
  19. Have you tried sheffieldjobstoday I've always used online agencies. Another I have used in the past is Jobserve You can set up pre-defined job criterea and they will email you opportunities, if any available, on a regular basis. Used to be a contract worker, and found this site invaluable. Not sure how many agencies they have on their books, but it's certainly quite a few. Far better than popping into different agencies. And far more efficient. You can save your CV online, and it will be auto-posted to any agency that meets your requirements.
  20. Suggest you get it cleaned prior to moving out. If the place is clean and tidy, there should be no delay in returning your bond. was the stain there when you moved in? If so, how long have you been there?
  21. These are just sample figures. Cost of purchase 70000 Cost of restoration 4000 The costs of purchase (solicitor, disbursements, agent, etc, etc) 1000 The annual mortgage cost 2000 interest only. The annual management costs 600 The annual sinking fund 0 The allowance for bad debt 0 The projected 100% occupied income 6000 p.a. The projected occupancy 100% No allowances have been made for tax, although I realise I will get tax relef on mortgage interest payments.
  22. Capital costs is what I have to pay initially. This includes purchase of property, including additional costs such as legal fees, valuation, restoration costs (if any). My Return is any income I receive, less any Revenue costs, such as mortgage repayments, EA fees, repairs, gas & electric safety inspections. I pay approx 200 mortgage out of the 500 monthly rental. I should have stated that my Revenue costs are very high this year due to some one-off repairs. Normally this would be approx 2000 p.a.
