  1. I recently completed a house renovation project and would recommend Jeff Smith (07861 379796), who I reached out to after reading some SF posts. Initially, just for some some joinery, but soon realised that the quality of his work was far better than others I had used, and that he could cover most/all house refurbishments/projects. Have used him for new wooden windows, joinery, new garage roof, electrical work, plastering, maintenance etc ... he has a good team he uses. Wish I had known Jeff at the start of my house project as it would be at lot easier, better quality and less stress. He is focused on quality and provides sensible advice ... which I needed for a few projects where I was struggling.
  2. Jeff Smith Joinery Solutions ... Replaced old wooden kitchen windows. Third job/project he has done for me. Great service and quality. Jeff is my trusted joiner.
  3. Recommendation for Jeff Smith (Joinery Solutions). Recently replaced some wooden windows and door in our utility room. End result looks great. Have used Jeff once before, very professional and high-level of craftsmanship/skill/attention to detail.
  4. Recommendation for Jeff The Joiner, who did some skirting and built a cupboard around a boiler for us (last week). - scheduled time for site visit to estimate and quote for work - suggested various approaches and designs for completing work. Was only Joiner to highlight that cupboard design would need to ensure that access to boiler for servicing needed to be considered e.g. ability to remove boiler cover - friendly, professional and completed work on time - end result looks great!
  5. Renovating my house. The next project is the ground floor. Have an original 100 year old, tongue and groove, solid, oak floor, which I would like to … a) restore/renovate - fix the many gaps (some large) - fix/replace broken bits - reduce draughts - Retain/re-use, as it is very nice in some areas b) Insulate - between joists - central heating pipework … so that overall the house is better insulated and warmer. However, I have no cellar and access from underneath is not an option. 1. Is it possible to rip up the original floor, lay appropriate insulation, re-tongue and groove original flooring, re-lay floor using original wood (+ some new where required)? 2. Recommended tradesmen for performing above job? 3. Or am I making this too complicated, and there are better ways to achieve my goals (btw have already replaced window frames with new hardwood ones / double glazing, prefer wood to carpet etc)? One alternative approach would be to lay a new wooden floor over existing one with thin layer of insulation between however, although I would be re-using the original floor, I would not be able to see it, and therefore not fully achieve my objective. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.
  6. Anyone enjoying Jonathan Richman's new CD "Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild"? One track in particular ("No One Was Like Vermeer") is classic Jonathan Richman. Who elso writes such great lines as .... "Vermeer was eerie Vermeer was strange He had a more modern colour range" Can't stop smiling and feeling happy when listening to this CD! Anyone know if he is planning a gig in Sheffield?
  7. "And I close my eyes with my eyelids" Typical - Frazier Chorus ... love the image and simplicity, but will be v surprised if anyone remembers or even has heard this one! "Too many protest singers, and not enough protest songs" A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins ... get well soon etc! Funny, and soooo true! "Through fields of cattle, Through fields of cane" Cattle & Cane - The Go-Betweens. Surely the most beautiful song title ever ... as well as a v fine song "You lack lust, your so lack lustre" Possession - Elvis Costello. Yes a bit of silly word play, but it sticks in the mind.
  8. Would appreciate any thoughts as to where best to park when going to the Showroom cinema. Have used the station car-park the last couple of visits, but although it is safe and in a good location find that £5.50 for 2-3 hours parking is a bit excessive! Any better options? PS Yes, should try and use public transport more! PPS "No Country for Old Men" is great movie!
  9. Dela Soul - 3 Feet High & Rising Digital Underground - Sex Packets look out for "doowhatyoulike" DJ Shadow - Entroducing .... MC Solaar - French too but well worth a listen!
  10. Sounds an interesting idea, so would be interested in attending too! Prefer Art House movies, but also go to the occassional blockbuster. Fave movies (all time) : Paris Texas, Shawshank, The Conversation, Fargo, Heimat, Jackie Brown, Annie Hall, Amelie and Wings of Desire Fave Movies (last year) : This is England, Family Friend, Paris Je T'aime
  11. 1. Anything with Louis De Funes e.g. "La Grand Vadrouille" or "Fantomas!" Classic French 60's comedies. Can lend you the DVDs or 2. Pierre Richard in "La Chevre" v funny, saw it years ago and would love to see it again. Gerard Depardieu is in it as well.
  12. I am available for selection! Sounds like a nice walk. Canada_girl, may I get a lift with you should you have any spare places left? I live in Nether Edge. No probs if this is not possible. Thanks,
  13. Interesting thread ... As a single guy, who is also new to Sheffield, I would consider attending some of the suggested events. Would view them as opportunities to socialise and meet new friends etc. However, also open to receiving pm's from any single women who may be interested in meeting up for a drink/chat/laugh etc. Me : English/French, 39 yo male, who likes listening to the Go-Betweens, mountain biking/skiing and fine wine!
