  1. Greetings all! Does anyone have any horse manure ready for collection over the next few days? Many thanks, Jon
  2. Hi TaliZorah, I went to explore the tunnels a few months ago and they do indeed exist. If you google 'Sheffield megatron' you'll see some fantastic photos of the tunnels. The most impressive tunnels run under the train station along the River Sheaf. There are more elsewhere in the city e.g. the Ponderosa but I've yet to explore those. Strongly recommend getting your walking boots on and exploring yourself though. You can access them over the railings behind the Q car park next to the train station. Be careful as always when going underground but it's generally safe and it'll be an exhilarating experience. Enjoy! Jon
  3. That's a shame. Yes, it would be great if you could find out if there is anything else being run in the Millhouses area. In the meantime I may go along to the Graves Park run on Thursday. Many thanks, Jon
  4. Hi there, Is this running club still active? If so, I'd like to come along! I'm currently training for the London Marathon 2013 (amongst other things). Hopefully see you 7.30pm on Thursday at the Millhouses Cafe if those details are still correct... Jon
  5. Junedee - it shocks me how many people would rather throw stones as the world crumbles around them, than do some pro-active towards making it a better place. The Occupy movement is in no way a failure. Here are my thoughts on what the Occupiers have achieved... http://jonmaiden.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/what-has-the-occupy-movement-achieved/
  6. I'm an amateur blogger!! What I write on my blog is my opinion and, as I made very clear in my articles about Occupy (and this shows you've clearly not actually read them), is based on my first hand dealings with the actual Occupiers... which is probably more than be said for your mindless criticism. I wonder if you've ever actually open your mind, even for one second, to another viewpoint. I sincerely doubt it...
  7. By the way, why does everyone keep referring to the protest as Occupy Sheffield Cathedral? In London it was never Occupy St. Paul's - it's always been known as Occupy London Stock Exchange. It is simply Occupy Sheffield. Without wanting to go round in circles, as we've discussed the fact it's on cathedral land is down to the options (offered ) left open by the Council - with this site being selected by the protesters as the most visible and closest to the banks...
  8. Thank you OneWheelDave. We really are quibbling over terminology here. Ok so there wasn't a formal 'offer' in the strictest sense of the word but, as Dave points out, there was a consultation process in which the Council removed certain suggestions leaving only a few options left to chose from. So they clearly presented what they were happy with / not unhappy with. To call someone a liar for this is quite honestly disgraceful. Surely we shouldn't be squabbling over terminology (I am only an amateur blogger and not professional journalist after all!) and we should be focused on debate the real issues here. I notice that I've still only had three responses to the question I posted earlier. Can those who oppose the protest only criticise (often the most ridiculous of points as above) or do you actually have anything constructive to say? Thanks to those who replied and have actually tried to raise the sorry level of this debate with me though...
  9. Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England! I hope they can find us on the map! Seriously though, more good questions. I'm not really qualified to answer to be honest as I've not spoken with anyone from OLSX (I'm only an 'armchair protester' remember!). I would have thought the support is generally universal unless on of the camps did something particularly radical that was against the interests of the 99%. Equally, I would hazard at guess that most Sheffield protesters believe the protest is most effecting when engaging the greatest number of people. Ergo, it's better to have them in as many cities as possible rather than just one large protest area. Be interesting to hear other views on this though... I'm signing out for a while people - the real world beckons! Happy chatting...
  10. Indeed. To say that invention relies on capitalism ignores pretty much 99% of human endeavour over the past several hundred thousand years... There are plenty of alternatives to capitalism too - not just communism or anarchy. Social democracy for example is a fantastic system which has led Scandinavian countries to have the highest living standards in the world...
  11. Thanks once again for helping raise the standard of this debate. I do wish more of the contributors did this also rather than just express rage at seemingly anything! Oh, and if I miss any of your questions it's not because I'm avoiding them - it's just because things move so quickly on here it's hard to keep up...
  12. Two different things. I suppose I am concerned it is losing momentum. Who knows where it will go from here, if anywhere. But I think it has already made a difference - widespread coverage in mainstream media, social networks alive with debate, politicians forced to have an opinion of it and are being challenged on the issues etc.
  13. I have made nothing up. As I understand it, Sheffield Council offered three options of sites that they were happy with. Perhaps that should be phrased "that they were not unhappy with" but the point still remains perfectly valid. I implore you - offer something CONSTRUCTIVE to this discussion!
  14. Not at all. It's just not possible to exist within this society without engaging in the capitalist system in some way. Plus some of these products may help to bring about positive change to the system e.g. the laptop I'm writing this on! But I know many of the protesters have limited the level to which they engage in consumerist / capitalist society in many different ways though...
